    Notes: White clover, (cv. Haifa) and subterranean clover (cv. Seaton Park) were grown in binary replacement series mixtures in the field at proportions of 100:0, 90:10, 50:50. 10:90 and 0:100, and cut every four weeks over three growing seasons from 1985 to 1987 at Scone, New South Wales (NSW) (32°S).Relatively low plant densities minimized competition in 1985, but in subsequent seasons Haifa and Seaton Park competed vigorously for the same resource;.; usually having relative crowding coefficients greater than 1.0, and relative yield totals greater than 1.0 in spring of 1986 and 1987, and autumn 1987. This over-yielding appeared to be due to some complementarity of leaf morphology and canopy architecture.Haifa severely depressed seed production of Seaton Park in mixtures. Haifa regenerated as an annual in 1986, but as a perennial, from surviving stolons, in 1987 owing to lower maximum temperatures and better rainfall distribution in late summer and autumn of 1987.It is concluded that white clover can survive severe competition from subterranean clover as a seedling, and if moisture allows, may severely depress seed production from subterranean clover, regardless of whether plants are annual or perennial in origin. Spatial separation may minimize competition in average years but competition effects may be severe in seasons with sufficient summer rainfall for perennation of white clover, and seasonal autumn rainfall for germination of subterranean clover.

    Notes: Abstract Kinetics of high-temperature oxidation, and of oxide spallation, are reported for a 20Cr-25Ni Nb-stabilized stainless steel, exposed in carbon dioxide at 40 bar pressure in the temperature range 1115–1240 K. Gross weight-gain kinetics were parabolic with respect to time, with an activation energy of 370±16 kJ/mol. Oxidation rates are shown to be consistent with diffusion control in the inner chromia layer of a two-layer oxide. Intergranular oxidation of silicon was observed beneath the oxide scale. Oxide spallation occurred at all temperatures and increased linearly with gross weight gain. At 1240 K 50% of the oxide which formed spalled at the first weighing. Thereafter, the fraction spalling decreased to about 10%. The difference is attributed to a change in the oxide composition from an M2O3 structure to M3O4, which requires greater compressive stresses to induce spallation during cooling.

    Notes: Abstract The kinetics of intergranular oxidation of silicon in a 20Cr-25Ni Nb-stabilized stainless steel are reported, at temperatures in the range 1140–1230 K, in CO2 at 40 bar pressure. The depth of attack increased parabolically with respect to time, with an activation energy of 335±30 kJ/mol. The mechanism of growth is discussed in terms of classical internal-oxidation theories, and an alternative explanation based on an “available-space” theory is developed. The internal oxidation rates in a number of different alloys are compared with diffusivities of metals in the base alloy. It is proposed that intergranular oxidation in the 20–25 Nb steel is controlled by the rate of outward diffusion of iron or chromium in the alloy.

    Notes: Abstract The preparation and properties of lithium borate based glasses are described. The properties which were monitored included the glass-forming ability, the thermal stability, the chemical durability and the mechanical behaviour. Methods which were used in an attempt to improve the mechanical properties of these glasses are also discussed, including controlled crystallization, chemical ion-exchange and fibre reinforcement. The strongest glass, which had a mean strength of ~ 280 MPa in biaxial flexure, was produced by ion-exchange in molten sodium nitrate.

    Notes: Abstract Research in carbon plastic composites in the former Soviet Union is reviewed for the period 1982–1992. There is a significant volume of research. Carbon fibres with tensile strengths greater than 5 GPa are being produced. Composites have inferior properties to the most advanced Western materials, tensile strengths being about 35% lower. The most significant research effort is in fibre/matrix interface studies. Activated and chemically modified carbon fibres have been extensively studied and the scope of this work is sometimes in advance of the West.

    Notes: The crystalline structures of “microlayer” and “nanolayer” polyethylene have been examined in coextruded films comprised of alternating layers of high-density polyethylene and polystyrene. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS), and wide-angle x-ray scattering (WAXS) reveal that microlayer polyethylene, where the layer thickness is on the order of several microns, crystallizes with the normal unoriented lamellar morphology. In nanolayer films, where the film thickness of tens of nanometers is on the size scale of molecular dimensions, lamellae are oriented with the long axes perpendicular to the extrusion direction in a row-nucleated morphology similar to structures described in the literature. The lamellae are partially twisted about the long axes. The preferred twist angles of ±40° orient the lamellar surfaces normal to the layer surface. The row-nucleated morphology imparts highly anisotropic mechanical properties to the nanolayer polyethylene.
