    Notes: Abstract The effect of treatment with SrCl2 (10 mg 100 g−) on rats 15 min prior to whole body γ-irradiation (7.5 Gy) was studied. The hazardous effects of irradiation were greatly corrected in the treated group. The hyperglycemic effect and liver glycogen accumulation in the untreated group decreased to normal level. The enzymatic activities of serum alkaline phosphatase, alanine and aspartate aminotransferases, and lactate dehydrogenase were greatly affected, showing insignificant changes in the treated group of animals. Life span calculated on 50% survival was also significantly elongated by 36.3%. These results show the potentiality of SrCl2 as a radioprotective agent. A proposed mechanism is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Burush is a small village in the N Sahelian Zone of the Sudan, whose population are basically sedentary agriculturists. The recurring drought conditions of the last two decades have significantly influenced the local resource base, so that the subsistence of the majority of the households was highly challenged. Nevertheless, the people are still surviving and resisting. The explanation of this resistence can be sought in the endogenous coping mechanisms adopted by the people. One of these mechanisms is migration, especially the seasonal labour migration of the heads and grown-up members of households, which used, even in good years, to be highly integrated in the strategies of survival of the majority of households. However under the recurring crop failures and the growing competition in the seasonal labour opportunities, this seasonal migration is changing gradually into stays of longer duration in the traditional destinations of seasonal labour. On the other hand, the male members of households are actively involved in migration of long duration, especially into the urban centres. Yet, the constributions of these migrant members to the subsistence of their households are limited, because of the rising costs of living in uurban centres as compared with the incomes. The rehabilitation of Burush lies obviously in the development of long-term strategies which aim at strengthening the endogenous resilience mechanisms.

    Notes: Abstract The eclipsing variable PP Lacertae has been examined on the basis of two light curves (V andB) analysed by means of the Fourier analysis of the light changes in the frequency domain, taking into account the perturbation and distortion effects of both components. A set of geometrical and physical elements for the system is obtained from both minima, through their magnitude variation during the observation time. The system has been discussed according to the behaviour of the light curves.

    Notes: Abstract To improve aircraft crash safety, conditions critical to occupants survival during a crash must be known. In view of the importance of this problem, studies of post-crash dynamic behavior of victims are necessary in order to reduce severe injuries. In this study, crash dynamics program SOM-LA/TA, incorporating a dynamic model of the human body with a finite element model of the seat structure was used. Modifications were performed in the program for reconstruction of an occupant's head impact with the interior walls or bulkhead. A viscoelastic-type contact force model was used to represent the compliance characteristics of the bulkhead. Correlated studies of analytical simulations with impact sled test results were accomplished. A parametric study of the coefficients in the contact force model was then performed in order to obtain the correlations between the coefficients and the Head Injury Criteria. A measure of optimal values for the bulkhead compliance and displacement requirements was thus achieved in order to keep the possibility of a head injury as little as possible. This information could in turn be used in the selection of suitable materials for the bulkhead, instrument panel, or interior walls of an aircraft.

    Notes: Abstract One method for predicting the impact response of a multibody system is based on the assumption that the impacting bodies undergo local deformations and the contact forces are continuous. In a continuous analysis, the integration of the system equations of motion is carried out during the period of contact; therefore, a model for evaluating the contact forces is required. In this paper, two such contact force models are presented, both Hertzian in nature and based upon the direct-central impact of two solid particles. At low impact velocities, the energy dissipation during impact can be represented by material damping. A model is constructed based on the general trend of the Hertz contact law in conjuction with a hysteresis damping function. The unknown parameters are determined in terms of a given coefficient of restitution and the impact velocity. When local plasticity effects are the dominant factor accounting for the dissipation of energy at high impact velocities, a Hertzian contact force model with permanent indentation is constructed. Utilizing energy and momentum considerations, the unknown parameters in the model are again evaluated. The two particle models are generalized to an impact analysis between two bodies of a multibody system.

    Notes: Abstract The distribution of UO 2 2+ and Th4+ in nitric acid media on crypomelane-type hydrous manganese dioxide (CRYMO) has been investigated by batch equilibrations and column break-through techniques. The parameters studied involve the media composition and concentrations of HNO3, NaNO3, UO 2 2+ and Th4+. It is found that Th4+ is more strongly adsorbed on CRYMO than UO 2 2+ with sufficient differences for chromatographic separation from each other. Uranium was quantitatively eluted from a CRYMO column with 0.1M HNO3. Th4+ has been recovered by using ≥ 1M HNO3 as eluent.

    Notes: Little is known about the cellular and molecular regulation of the uptake process of the water-soluble vitamin biotin into liver cells, the major site of biotin utilization and metabolism. Such studies are best done using a highly viable and homogeneous cellular system that allows examination of prolonged exposure to an agent(s) or a particular condition(s) on the uptake process. Isolated hepatocytes when maintained in primary culture lose their ability to transport biotin by the specialized carrier system. The aim of the present study was, therefore, to examine the mechanism(s) of biotin uptake by the cultured human-derived liver cells, Hep G2. Uptake to biotin by Hep G2 cells was appreciable and linear for up to 10 min of incubation. The uptake process was Na+ gradient-dependent as indicated by studies of Na+ replacement and pretreatment of cells with gramicidin and ouabain. Biotin uptake was also dependent on both incubation temperature and intracellular energy. Unlabeled biotin and the structural analogs with free carboxyl groups (thioctic acid, desthiobiotin) but not those with blocked carboxyl group (biocytin, biotin methyl ester, and thioctic amide) caused significant inhibition of 3H-biotin uptake at 37°C but not 4°C. Initial rate of biotin uptake was saturable as a function of concentration at 37°C but was lower and linear at 4°C. Pretreatment of Hep G2 cells with sulfhydryl group inhibitors (e.g., p-chloromer-curibenzene sulfonate) led to a significant inhibition in biotin uptake; this inhibition was effectively reversed by reducing agents (e.g., dithiothreitol). Biotin uptake was also inhibited by the membrane transport inhibitors probenecid (noncompetitively), DIDS and furosemide but not by amiloride. Pretreatment of Hep G2 cells with valinomycin did not alter biotin uptake. The stoichiometric ratio of biotin to Na+ uptake in Hep G2 cells was also determined and found to be 1:1. These findings demonstrate that biotin uptake by these cultured liver cells is mediated through a specialized carrier system that is dependent on Na+-gradient, temperature, and energy and transports the vitamin by an electroneutral process. These findings are similar to those seen with native liver tissue preparations and demonstrate the suitability of Hep G2 cells for in-depth investigations of the cellular and molecular regulation of biotin uptake by the liver. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.This article is a US Government work, and as such, is in the public domain in the United State of America.
