    Notes: A procedure for land-surface zoning, related to the protection of groundwater against both point and diffuse pollution, is described. The procedure is based upon two independent elements:(i) Division of the entire land surface on the basis of the aquifer pollution vulnerability, which relates to protection of groundwater resources; and(ii) A series of special protection areas for individual sources, in which various potentially polluting activities are either prohibited or strictly controlled.The procedure is hydrogeologically based, but not so complex as to be unworkable in practice. For resource protection three classes of formation type are defined, with a further subdivision on the basis of depth to saturated aquifer. In the case of diffuse pollution, it will also be necessary to consider the nature of the soil cover in the area where the polluting activity occurs. For source protection, up to four special protection areas are specified, and the criteria used to define them are discussed.

    Notes: Although typically life history and morphology are studied separately, they may evolve most often in concert. Therefore, a full understanding of the evolution of fish life-history patterns may require exploration of the evolutionary interplay between components of life history and other aspects of phenotype. One of the most promising approaches to understanding phenotypic integration is population comparison. This approach is particularly effective when ancestralderived relationships are understood and when multiple populations can be inferred to have evolved derived character states independently. Here we provide an example of this approach using five allopatric populations of freshwater three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculcatus L.) that have diverged in response to differences in selection regimes among the lakes they inhabit. We demonstrate a relationship between one aspect of reproductive life history, clutch volume and relative body shape. The differences are consistent with those predicted on the basis of differences in trophic habit and overall body form. Finally, we discuss the value of particular groups of fish for use in comparative studies and explore the kinds of evolutionary issues that can be addressed through population comparison.

    Notes: Transient laser-induced electrical signals with peak voltages of ∼50 mV and 〈20 ns duration (full width half-maximum) have been observed in room-temperature thin films of YBa2Cu3O7−x in the absence of an applied current. It is demonstrated that the signal polarity is reversed when the films are illuminated through the substrate rather than at the air/film interface. The mechanism for this effect has yet to be elucidated.

    Notes: Room-temperature laser-induced voltages were observed in unsupported, polycrystalline wafers of YBa2Cu3O7−x in the absence of a transport current. Peak voltages of ∼1 V were detected in response to 40 mJ pulses of 532 nm light. The rise and fall times for the signals were detector limited. The half widths of the signals were instrument response limited (laser pulsed limited for a 10 ns laser pulse and digitizer limited for a 30 ps laser pulse). At fixed pulse energy, the induced peak voltage scales as the sine of the angle of incidence of the laser beam and is nulled at normal incidence. The magnitude of the signal as a function of sample thickness, preparation, and laser excitation wavelength is discussed.

    Notes: An increasing number of pesticide compounds are being detected in groundwater supplies worldwide. There has, nevertheless, been little research into the mechanisms by which such pollution occurs and the routes via which pesticides move from the land surface into aquifers. In view of the potential time-lag in the response of groundwater systems to pollution inputs, such knowledge is essential if the current situation is to be appraised adequately and if any necessary controls on pesticide use are to be introduced.From basic data on the physicochemical properties of pesticide compounds and on groundwater flow and pollutant transport in the principal British aquifers, some useful observations can be made about the relative significance of different mechanisms of potential groundwater pollution. These mechanisms and their implications for field research on pesticide pollution of groundwater are discussed. This problem is compared and contrasted to that of nitrate pollution from agricultural land-use practices.

    Notes: On 3 occasions during summer 1977, small groups of a typically run- and pool-dwelling minnow (blacktail shiner, Cyprinella venusta) were observed feeding in a shallow riffle on items dislodged by foraging northern hog suckers (Hypentelium nigricans). Although such nuclear-attendant following behavior has been documented in marine systems and has been reported from some African freshwater lakes, descriptions from freshwater streams are rare. We describe the interaction and consider the probable development of the search behaviour of the blacktail shiners. We also explore the possible benefits of searching for hog suckers in small groups, as observed, rather than as individuals or in large groups. This feeding strategy may be an important mechanism of food acquisition for some individuals when usual resources are scarce.

    Notes: In spite of displaying the most extreme dormancy and resistance properties known among living systems, bacterial endospores retain an alert environment-sensing mechanism that can respond within seconds to the presence of specific germinants. This germination response is triggered in the absence of both germinant and germinant-stimulated metabolism. Genes coding for components of the sensing mechanism in spores of Bacillus subtilis have been cloned and sequenced. However, the molecular mechanism whereby these receptors interact with germinants to initiate the germination response is unknown. Recent evidence has suggested that in spores of Bacillus megaterium KM, proteolytic activation of an autolytic enzyme constitutes part of the germination trigger reaction.

    Notes: Summary Fatty acyl moieties present in the female sex pheromone gland of the lightbrown apple moth,Epiphyas postvittana, include the analogues of the two sex pheromone components, (E)-11-tetradecenyl acetate and (E,E)-9,11-tetradecadienyl acetate. Application of deuterium-labelled fatty acids followed by analysis by gas chromatographymass spectrometry showed that biosynthesis of the two pheromone components involved initial Δ11-desaturation of myristic and palmitic acids respectively.
