Description: The synthesis of high-quality films of the recently discovered mercury-based cuprate films with high transition temperatures has been plagued by problems such as the air sensitivity of the cuprate precursor and the volatility of Hg and HgO. These processing difficulties have been circumvented by a technique of atomic-scale mixing of the HgO and cuprate precursors, use of a protective cap layer, and annealing in an appropriate Hg and O(2) environment. With this procedure, a zero-resistance transition temperature as high as 124 kelvin in c axis-oriented epitaxial HgBa(2)CaCu(2)O(6+delta) films has been achieved.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Tsuei, C C -- Gupta, A -- Trafas, G -- Mitzi, D -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1994 Mar 4;263(5151):1259-61.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17817429" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: The superconducting transport characteristics of HgBa(2) CaCu(2)O(6+delta) (Hg-1212) films and grain-boundary junctions grown on (100)-oriented SrTiO(3) bicrystal substrates have been investigated. The films exhibit a zero-resistance temperature of approximately 120 kelvin and sustain large critical current densities, with values as high as 10(6) amperes per square centimeter at around 100 kelvin. On the other hand, the grain boundaries behave as weak links, with substantially lower critical currents, as is observed for other cuprate superconductors. A reduction of three orders of magnitude in critical current was observed for transport across a 36.8 degrees grain boundary. The current-voltage characteristics of bridges across such a grain boundary show weak-link behavior qualitatively resembling that of a resistively shunted junction. Single-level direct-current superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) have been fabricated with such bicrystal junctions. These SQUIDs show clear periodic voltage modulations when subjected to applied magnetic fields. The SQUIDs operate at temperatures as high as 111.8 kelvin, which makes them attractive for operation in portable sensors and devices that utilize nonconventional cooling methods.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Gupta, A -- Sun, J Z -- Tsuei, C C -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1994 Aug 19;265(5175):1075-7.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17832899" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Notes: We report evidence for an ordered flux line lattice in a 2-μm epitaxial film of YBaCuO from both neutron depolarization and diffraction measurements. Depolarization occurred when field cooling was done normal to the film plane but not within it; this is consistent with frozen-in vortices. Evidence for ordering of the flux lines comes from intensity maxima observed in difference patterns between field cooled and zero field cooled conditions.

Notes: Metal-insulator-semiconductor field effect transistors have been fabricated using laser ablation to deposit YBaCuO thin films onto SrTiO3, MgO, LaAlO3, and LaGaO3 substrates. The substrates were used as gate insulators. The conductivity of two films on SrTiO3 could be modulated, while for other samples the conductivity was independent of the gate voltage. The field-effect mobility was extracted and found to be of magnitude comparable to the mobility of metallic YBa2Cu3O7.

Notes: Synthesis of YBa2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO) has been achieved using laser ablation of separate oxide targets YBa2Ox and CuO, as well as Y2Cu2O5 and BaCuO2. Results obtained using two synchronized lasers to ablate from the two targets show that high quality epitaxial YBCO films can be obtained independent of the laser pulse delay settings. The facile formation of the YBCO phase, irrespective of the nature of the reacting precursors, points to its high thermodynamic stability under conditions used for in situ growth of films.

Notes: Films of YBa2Cu3O7−x prepared by laser ablation deposition show epitaxial growth on (100) SrTiO3 substrates with the c axis perpendicular to the plane of the film. With the magnetic field (H) parallel to the c axis, critical currents of up to 40 MA/cm2 from magnetization measurements are obtained. With H perpendicular to the c axis, various magnetization measurements with field cooling in 40 kOe indicated strong pinning effects with a calculated critical current density significantly higher than that observed in the parallel field configuration.

Notes: Periodic oscillations in the V-Φ characteristics have been observed up to 97 K in radio frequency SQUIDs fabricated from screen printed Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O thick films. The SQUID has been operated successfully in the flux-locked-loop mode at 77 K. Stability of the SQUID output and its noise performance have been found to improve considerably when the SQUID is operated in the flux-locked-loop mode as compared to that in the open-loop mode. The spectral noise density, in the white noise region, is 5×10−4 Φ0/(square root of)Hz at 77 K for the flux-locked-loop mode.

Notes: A c-axis epitaxial film of composition (Y0.8Ca0.2)Ba2Cu3O6+x is found to be superconducting over a wide range of oxygen stoichiometry, from x≈0 to x≈1.0. The oxygen stoichiometry was varied systematically by annealing films over four decades of oxygen partial pressure, ranging from 0.0067%–100% O2. Both the superconducting transition temperature and the remanent magnetization increase with increasing x and are approximately linear with log oxygen partial pressure over three decades. These increases are attributed mainly to the change in the number of holes in the Cu–O planes caused by oxidation.

Notes: A magneto-optically active glass, Ce(PO3)3, was used to image field penetration into three superconducting films of YBa2Cu3O7 that were laser ablated on (100)-oriented SrTiO3 substrates. The magnetic-field profile in these films was mapped using the Faraday effect in an external field of 92 mT for two of the films and 181 mT for the third film. These contours show regions where flux had easily penetrated, indicating weak pinning, and other regions that were strongly pinning. From the measured field gradients, it was determined that Jc varies by at least an order of magnitude across the surface of the films.
