Notes: Near-infrared optical absorption and Faraday rotation have been studied, in addition to the room-temperature sheet resistance, in a series of magnesium-doped bismuth substituted lutetium iron garnet (Bi:LuIG) thin films grown by liquid phase epitaxy. Faraday rotation was measured at 1150 and 1300 nm as a function of the MgO concentration in the melt. Optical absorption data indicate valence exchange as a possible mechanism for increased optical absorption at compositions different from charge compensation. Faraday rotation data display a magnesium doping dependent behavior, as do the I-V characteristics. Additionally, the I-V data of unetched and etched films near compensation suggest a two-layer structure to the films.

Notes: Microwave and magneto-optic measurements have been made on bismuth-substituted yttrium iron garnet (BiYIG) films. Forward-volume (FV) magnetostatic-wave (MSW) attenuation has been measured from ferrimagnetic resonance and from pulse delay data. We report the indirect observation of FV MSW in BiYIG using two independent techniques: a pulse transmission technique and a passband measurement technique. Faraday rotation in the films was also recorded at a wavelength of 1.3 μm. The bismuth-substituted films are grown on carefully cleaned substrates and have yttrium:bismuth ratios of 1:1. The composition of the bismuth substituted films is Y1.5Bi1.5Fe5O12 deduced from lattice parameters and absolute Faraday rotation. These films show particular promise for use in waveguide-type high-speed MSW-optical devices where low MSW attenuation and high Faraday rotation are among the necessary criteria for successful operation.

Notes: Selective growth of GexSi1−x on Si is demonstrated for the first time using a pulsed laser induced epitaxy technique, combined with either standard oxide or liftoff patterning processes. Two different dimensions of Ge0.12Si0.88/Si lateral wells are formed, 3.5 μm wide by 1700 A(ring) deep, and 6 μm wide by 1300 A(ring) deep. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy, combined with energy-dispersive x-ray imaging, reveals a well-defined two-dimensional (2D) Ge redistribution profile with no significant line or surface defects observed. The 2D Ge well distribution profiles, governed by heat and mass transport during the laser processing, are discussed.

Notes: DNA amplification by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used specifically to detect the mycoplasma-like organism (MLO) associated with lethal yellowing disease of palms in Florida. For PCR, a pair of oligonucleotide primers was synthesized according to partial sequences of a cloned 1·3 kbp fragment of lethal yellowing MLO-specific genomic DNA isolated from a diseased windmill palm (Trachycarpus fortunei). A DNA product of about 1 kbp was specifically amplified by PCR in reaction mixtures containing template DNA derived from either heart, inflorescence or leaf tissues of lethal yellowing-affected palms. PCR performed for 35 cycles with as little as 5 pg of DNA template, in some instances, was sufficient consistently to amplify the same lethal yellowing MLO DNA product from hearts of 11 species comprising 30 symptomatic palms. Similar reliable and reproducible detection of the lethal yellowing MLO in palm inflorescence spikelets was also achieved after 35 cycles of PCR. When template DNA for PCR was derived from tissues of the the most immature emerging leaf, a 40-cycle reaction was sufficient for consistent foliar detection of the pathogen in all coconut palms including palms with earliest visible symptoms of disease.

Notes: Cultured microspores of Brassica napus L. cvs Topas and Reston initiated cell divisions within 3 to 4 days, and globular, heart and torpedo shaped embryos were prevalent after approximately 6, 8, and 10 days, respectively. Embryos with rudimentary cotyledons were evident within 2 weeks, but those that reached this stage of development represented only 1–5% of the original microspore population. The fresh weight of microspore-derived embryos at all stages of development was significantly greater than that for zygotic embryos, but the pattern of change in fresh weight and fatty acid accumulation was similar in developing zygotic and microspore embryos. In freshly isolated microspores of both Topas (low erucic acid) and Reston (high erucic acid), the predominant fatty acid was 18:3, while 18:1 comprised less than 15% of total fatty acids. During development in both zygotic and microspore embryos, the level of 18:3 declined markedly while 18:1 rapidly increased. Erucic acid (22:1) was not detected in the early stages of embryogenesis in Reston. However, small amounts of 22:1 appeared by early cotyledonary stage and the level gradually increased in both zygotic and microspore embryos through the later stages of development. The fatty acid compositions of mature embryos was nearly identical to that of dry seed, except the level of 22:1 in Reston embryos was consistently less than in the seed. Triacylglycerols comprised only 15% of total lipids in freshly isolated microspores, but increased to more than 90% by 4 weeks. The fatty acid composition of the triacylglycerol fraction was generally similar to that of total lipids at all stages of development of microspore-derived embryos.

Notes: Abstract Pulsed Laser-Induced Epitaxy (PLIE)/Gas Immersion Laser Doping (GILD) offers several advantages over alternative epitaxial processes, especially because the process can be made spatially selective. Here, a pulsed XeCl excimer laser is used to grow poly-Si1−xGex layers with Ge fractions up to 30% by intermixing a structure of electron beam-evaporated a-Ge on poly-Si deposited on quartz. Arsenic or boron dopant is incorporated during the melt process by using, respectively, an AsF5 or BF3 gas ambient. RBS and SIMS analysis reveal that the Ge metallurgical depth, the dopant junction depth and the incorporated dopant dose scale with the laser energy density and the number of laser pulses. The sheet resistance values reached after GILD process are low enough to be suitable for the fabrication of source and drain for poly-SiGe TFTs.

Notes: Abstract Sulphate in precipitation is an index of atmospheric pollution but natural sources also contribute to its concentration. One of the dominant natural sources of sulphate is seasalt and reseachers have routinely calculated its proportion using reference species such as Cl−, Na+ and Mg2+. Such a method of estimation assumes conservatism of, and a purely marine origin for, the reference species. The stable isotopes of sulphur were utilized to assess the validity of these assumptions for a coastal area in Canada by taking advantage of the sulphur isotopic signature of seasalt sulphate (+20‰). The seaspray component (PSS) was calculated for 39 coastal rain events using Cl−, Na+ and Mg2+ as reference species and these parameters were plotted against the sulphur isotopic composition of sulphate in the sample. All three regression lines yielded a value of ≈ +4‰ for a sample containing no seasalt. The regression lines extrapolated to δ 34S≈+20, +17 and +16‰ using Cl−, Na+ and Mg2+ respectively for a theoretical sample whose sulphate was derived totally from seasalt. This observation confirms that for this locality, the marine component of precipitation sulphate utilizing Cl− is isotopically equivalent to sea spray sulphate, suggesting that Cl− is a suitable reference species. It also supports the use of δ 34SSO4 as a constraint on the selection of the correct reference species for estimation of the seasalt component in a particular study area.

Notes: Abstract Films of Fe0.79Ge0.21 were synthesized by ion beam sputtering, and were annealed at temperatures from 150 to 500 °C. The as-prepared materials comprised chemically disordered bcc crystallites, but short-range and long-range D03 chemical order developed upon annealing. The57Fe hyperfine magnetic field distribution can be understood approximately with a model of magnetic response, so the hyperfine magnetic field distribution can be used to follow the changes in chemical short-range ordering. Large local isomer shifts were observed at57Fe atoms near Ge atoms.
