Notes: Abstract The unsteady viscous incompressible flow around a circular cylinder is studied numerically for high Reynolds number. The two dimensional Navier-Stokes equation in stream function-vorticity formulation is solved. A fractional step method is used to solve the stream function equation while the vorticity transport equation is solved using a third order upwinding scheme. The computed solutions by the finite difference method agree reasonably well with the available experimental and other computational results at a Reynolds number of 9500 and 4500. These comparisons are for the initial stages of flow evolution when the wake bubble is symmetric.

Notes: Summary A chromosomal survey using standard lymphocyte cultures employing different media and G-banding techniques was initiated in 1984. This study became particularly important following the tragic gaseous exposure of the population in Bhopal at midnight on 2 December 1984. We have been able to formulate a chromosomal profile for each person whom we have studied; during 1986–1988, 154 persons were examined twice. Among seemingly normal individuals, as many as 20% might possess some chromosomal abnormality; of these, 50% may develop, at a later date, some kind of pathological complication (such as tumours, recurrent abortion or transmission of defects to their offspring). The people exposed to methyl isocyanate have repeatedly shown Robertsonian translocations, mostly in acrocentric chromosomes 13 and 21. Other types of translocations have been studied among all exposed (53) and normal (101) persons; the involvement of chromosomes 5, 9, 11, 14 and 16 is statistically significant (P= 〈0.001). One of the major clinical symptoms is dyspnoea; we have estimated that almost all seriously dyspnoeic patients have developed at least two categories of chromosomal aberrations, one of which is Robertsonian translocation, in at least 10% metaphases. Our chromosomal survey will be of significance because we are able to identify people with chromosomal aberrations that might be correlated with future pathological consequences of the accident. The “chromosomal load” that can be sustained with an apparently normal phenotype can also be measured.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Stärke isoliert aus Wasser Kastanie (Trapa Bispinosa Roxb) wurde in Amylose und Amylopektin mit konventioneller Methodik fraktioniert. An beiden, dem Amylose-Jod und Amylopektin-Jod-Komplex wurden spektrometrische Diagramme aufgenommen. Auch über die Kinetik des Abbaues dieser Komplexe wird berichtet.
Notes: Summary Starch isolated from water-chestnut (Trapa Bispinosa Roxb) was fractionated into amylose and amylopectin by conventional method. Spectrophotometric studies have been carried on each of amyloseiodine and amylopectin-iodine complex. The kinetics of the decomposition of these complexes have also been reported.

Notes: Abstract Mesophyll protoplasts from leaves of aseptically grown shoot tips of Diplotaxis muralis were isolated (6.2–7.1×105 protoplasts/g fresh weight of tissue) using one step enzyme digestion. The protoplasts (71% viability) underwent divisions (4.2+0.1%) on plating in M8PS2 medium and ultimately formed calli with 0.45+0.03% plating efficiency. Plant regeneration could be achieved both through embryogenesis and organogenesis. The efficiency of plant regeneration through organogenesis was 9 times higher than embryogenesis. Forty eight out of 52 plants regenerated so far from 3 independent experiments were normal with respect to fertility and meiotic chromosomal behavior.

Notes: Summary Heterotrophic dinitrogen fixation in root associations of successional stages of the tropical mangrove plant community at the Ganges river estuary in India was investigated by excised-root acetylene reduction assay, and enumeration and identification of diazotrophic bacteria from sediment, root and tidal water samples. High to very high rates of nitrogenase activity (64–130 nmol C2H4/g dry root/h) were associated with washed excised roots of seven common early-successional mangrove species at the inundated swamps. Declining, late-successional mangroves at the occasionally inundated ridges had considerably lower values and the “declined” mangroves and other non-littoral species at embankment protected highlands had very low to insignificant values of root nitrogenase activity. Total and inorganic nitrogen contents of the mangrove sediments were low and were positively related to the stages of physiographic succession. Plant-associated sediments of particularly the old formation swamps had very high C/N ratios. Nine isolates of nitrogen-fixing bacteria belonging to all known O2 response groups were distinguished from a large population of diazotrophs associated with roots of mangroves and other associate plant species of the community. The isolates differed with respect to their N2-fixation efficiency and halotolerance in pure culture. There was no specificity of any of the bacterial isolates to any of the plant species of the community but a higher number of efficient isolates were seen to be associated with mangroves at the swampy succession. Sediment-free tidal water also contained a large population of microaerophilic and anaerobic N2-fixing bacteria.

Notes: Summary From three sets of crosses involving the phenotypes chocolate, red oxide, green with chocolate streaks and green with red oxide streaks, the action of the genes governing the phenotypes of the pods ofCajanus cajan (L.) Millsp. has been proposed. GeneL controls production of chocolate colour,L r an allelomorph ofL hitherto unreported, controls production of red oxide colour and geneD controls distribution of this colour. As regards inheritance of these two genes, the relationships betweenL andL r isL〉L r andD is incompletely dominant overd. The genotypes of the different phenotypes have been presented.

Notes: Summary This short paper provides an alternative framework to axiomatize various binary preference relations such as semiorder, weak semiorder etc. A set of simple axioms is presented in terms of revealed-preferred and revealed-inferior alternatives which makes the connection between various binary preference relations transparent; and every single axiom is necessary and sufficient for the existence of a binary preference relation of a specified type.

Notes: Summary An amyloglucosidase from a mycelial culture of the mushroom Termitomyces clypeatus hydrolysed larch wood xylan independently and synergistically with an endo-β(1→4) xylanase of the same fungus. The glucoamylase saccharified xylan predigested with xylanase at a faster rate compared to that of xylanase acting on amylase-digested xylan. However, overall saccharification of xylan in both cases was the same. Only glucose was liberated from xylan by amylase digestion whereas xylose, xylobiose and other oligosaccharides were liberated during xylanase digestion. The synergistic response of enzyme combinations was reflected in the liberation of glucose from xylan, rather than xylose. Glucoamylase and xylanase activities on soluble and insoluble fractions of larch wood xylan with different xylose and glucose contents suggested that synergism in xylanolysis by the presence of glucoamylase was dependent on the activity of the participating xylanase on the xylan preparation. It is suggested that possibly α-glucosidic linkages are present in xylan and that amyloglucosidase might be involved in xylanolysis.
