    Notes: Summary Considerable progress has been made in recent years in the analysis of time series arising from chaotic systems. In particular, a variety of schemes for the short-term prediction of such time series has been developed. However, hitherto all such algorithms have used batch processing and have not been able to continuously update their estimate of the dynamics using new observations as they are made. This severely limits their usefulness in real time signal processing applications. In this paper we present a continuous update prediction scheme for chaotic time series that overcomes this difficulty. It is based on radial basis function approximation combined with a recursive least squares estimation algorithm. We test this scheme using simulated data and comment on its relationship to adaptive transversal filters, which are widely used in conventional signal processing.

    Notes: Abstract Phylogenetic and physiological methods were used to study the evolution of the opsin gene family in Drosophila. A phylogeny based on DNA sequences from 13 opsin genes including representatives from the two major subgenera of Drosophila shows six major, well-supported clades: The “blue opsin” clade includes all of the Rhl and Rh2 genes and is separated into two distinct subclades of Rhl sequences and Rh2 sequences; the ultraviolet opsin clade includes all Rh3 and Rh4 genes and bifurcates into separate Rh3 and Rh4 clades. The duplications that generated this gene family most likely took place before the evolution of the subgenera Drosophila and Sophophora and their component species groups. Numerous changes have occurred in these genes since the duplications, including the loss and/or gain of introns in the different genes and even within the Rhl and Rh4 clades. Despite these changes, the spectral sensitivity of each of the opsins has remained remarkably fixed in a sample of four species representing two species groups in each of the two subgenera. All of the strains that were investigated had R1-6 (Rhl) spectral sensitivity curves that peaked at or near 480 nm, R7 (Rh3 and Rh4) peaks in the ultraviolet range, and ocellar (Rh2) peaks near 420 nm. Each of the four gene clades on the phylogeny exhibits very conservative patterns of amino acid replacement in domains of the protein thought to influence spectral sen sitivity, reflecting strong constraints on the spectrum of light visible to Drosophila.

    Notes: Abstract A previously identified complex mutation, affecting exon 28 of the neurofibromatosis type 1 gene, was employed for the analysis of the expression pattern in primary cultures of neurofibroma cells and melanocytes from a café-au-lait macule of the patient, respectively. Reverse transcription and subsequent polymerase chain reaction amplification of the segment carrying the mutation revealed that both alleles were expressed in both cell types analysed, thus excluding loss of heterozygosity in this particular instance. Segregation of the alleles of the intragenic Alu sequence length-polymorphism disclosed the paternal orgin of the mutated allele. Detection of this mutation was also used for presymptomatic direct DNA diagnosis in the younger child of the patient.

    Notes: Abstract Two new recombinant haplotypes of the rat major histocompatibility system,RT1, have been detected in [LEW.1A (RT1 a ) ×LEW.1W (RT1 u )] × LEW 1N(RT1 n ) segregating hybrids. Recombinantr3 carries theRTL1. A region (determining classical transplantation antigens) and theRT1.B region (determining strong mixed lymphocyte reactivity and genetic control of antipolypeptide immune responsiveness) of the RT1a parent, bur rejects RT1a skin grafts. Recombinantr4 carries theA andB regions of the RT1u parent, but rejects RT1u skin grafts. The two histocompatibility genes detected are allelic to each other. The relevant locus, designated asH-C, maps to theB-region side of theRT1 system and appears to mark a thirdRT1 gene region,RT1.C. Availability of haplotypes r3 andr4 allowed the definition of a histocompatibility locus in theB region,H-B. The products ofH-C, H-B and of the previously describedH-A gene vary in antigenic strength.

    Notes: Summary A single-strand conformational polymorphism found in the DNA of a patient with neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1) was shown to be caused by a deletion of a CCACC or CACCT sequence and an adjacent transversion, located about 500 base pairs downstream from the region that codes for a functional domain of the NF1 gene product. This mutation could also be detected in the patient and in his affected daughter by heteroduplex analysis. The deletion removes the proximal half of a small potential stem-loop and interrupts the reading frame in exon 1. A severely truncated protein with a grossly altered carboxy terminus lacking one third of its sequence is expected to be formed from the mutant allele.

    Notes: Abstract A sixth order nonlinear model for horizontal head rotations in humans is analyzed using an extended parameter sensitivity analysis and a global optimization algorithm. The sensitivity analysis is used in both the direct sense, as a model fitting tool, and in the indirect sense, as a guide to experimental design. Resolution is defined in terms of the sensitivity table, and is used to interpret the sensitivity results. Using sensitivity analyses, the head and eye movement systems are compared and contrasted. Controller signal parameters are the most influential. Their variations and effects on head movement trajectories and accelerations are investigated, and the conclusions are compared with clinical neurological findings. The global optimization algorithm, in addition to automating the fitting of various types of data, is combined with time optimality theory to give theoretical time-optimal inputs to the model.

    Notes: Abstract Voluntary movements of the upper body are accompanied by anticipatory postural adjustments to the lower body in a standing subject. The long-standing hypothesis is that these anticipatory adjustments serve to counteract the perturbation to the body's center of gravity caused by the voluntary arm movement. This paper presents model simulations investigating the possible roles of anticipatory postural activity that accompanies a rapid, upward arm swing. The model encorporates two (idealized) antagonistic muscle pairs controlling the movements of a double-joint system, with a “shoulder joint” between the arm and stiff body links, and an “ankle joint” between the stiff body-leg segment and the ground. Each muscle is represented by a nonlinear viscoelastic element and also includes proprioceptive feedback. Four inputs to the model define the motor control signals for muscle force generation in both the arm and the postural muscle pairs. The neurological component of the model describes consequences of alternate strategies for cocontractions, stretch reflex activity, and anticipatory and synchronous postural activities (or combinations thereof). Simulations with this model show that: (1) none of the postural maintenance schemes considered in these simulations (including varying anticipation) could suppress the initial backward thrust on the body link; (2) the more important destabilizing perturbation is a subsequent forward sway that, left uncountered by postural activity, would eventually leave the body to fall flat on its face; and (3) anticipatory silencing of the postural extensor followed by a brief period of extensor activation (descending control) and synchronous reflex activity (feedback control) appears to be the most likely postural stabilizing strategy that inhibits the continuous forward sway and is consistent with the experimental evidence.

    Notes: Abstract The pupil can be excited to sustained oscillations under high gain feedback conditions. The period of these oscillations (cycle time) is reduced by increased average light level by an amount commensurate with reductions in phase lag reported in the companion paper (Myers et al. 1991b). A mathematical model of this phenomenon is used to unify and clarify experimental data presented here and in the literature.
