Notes: Abstract The Austrian reconnaissance study of stream-sediment composition — more than 30000 clay-fraction samples collected over an area of 40000 km2 — is summarized in an atlas of regional maps that show the distributions of 35 elements. These maps, rich in information, reveal complicated patterns of element abundance that are difficult to compare on more than a small number of maps at one time. In such a study, multivariate procedures such as simultaneous R-Q mode components analysis may be helpful. They can compress a large number of variables into a much smaller number of independent linear combinations. These composite variables may be mapped and relationships sought between them and geological properties. As an example, R-Q mode components analysis is applied here to the Grazer Paläozoikum, a tectonic unit northeast of the city of Graz, which is composed of diverse lithologies and contains many mineral deposits.

Notes: Abstract  The progress in microfabrication technologies is currently characterized by an increasing number of microproducts and corresponding efforts for cost effective mass fabrication. In this context, the development and utilization of new application specific materials has become one of the key challenges for the commercial production of miniaturized functional units. This applies, in particular, to the LIGA technique, a sequence of process steps combining deep lithography, microelectroforming and micromoulding, which offers an extremely broad spectrum of materials for the generation of ultraprecise three-dimensional microstructures. A wide variety of polymers, metals, metal alloys and ceramic materials are by now accessible for fabricating microdevices. There are practically no major limitations in selecting the desired material properties, e.g. in respect of mechanical stiffness or biocompatibility, optical transparency or magnetic properties, resistance against corrosion or whatever is required by the specific function of a microdevice.

Notes: Abstract This paper is focused on the development of plastic nano titer plates for applications in high throughput screening (HTS). For screening systems with integrated confocal microscopes plastic chips have been fabricated by injection molding and injection compression molding which contain micro wells with volumes of 0.9 μl and 1.4 μl and bottom plates with thicknesses of 120 μm and 200 μm. In addition, plastic chips with through holes have been joined with 160 μm glass plates by an adhesive printing process. First fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) measurements show that the plastic plates with glass bottoms are qualified as screening grade FCS nano titer plates.

Notes: We describe an experimental device, which enables the investigation of mechanical point contacts with variable contact size. Electrical resistance, thermal resistance, and thermoelectric power can be measured simultaneously at temperatures between 1.5 and 300 K. By investigation of the phononic part of the thermal resistance we introduce a new, reliable method for determination of the contact size.

Notes: Abstract Incorporation of First-Order Uptake Rate Constants from Simple Mammillary Models into Blood-Flow Limited Physiological Pharmacokinetic Models via Extraction Efficiencies. W. L. Roth, L. W. D. Weber, and K. Rozman (1995). Pharm. Res. 263–269. First-order rate constants obtained from classical pharmacokinetic models correspond to mammillary systems in which all of the blood (or plasma) is assumed to be located in a central compartment. In such models the rate at which chemicals are transported out of this pool and into another compartment is the product of the mass of chemical in the central compartment multiplied by a rate constant, which is not limited in magnitude by the blood flow, or the rate at which chemicals from the blood are delivered to the peripheral compartment. Most of the physiologically-based models published to date dispense with some of the information available from mammillary models by assuming that all of the chemical delivered by the flow of blood rapidly equilibrates and can be taken up by the tissue under the control of a “partition coefficient” (Rij = Cj/Ci). We show that the partition coefficient alone does not retain the uptake rate (kji) information available from a classical mammillary model, but that the uptake rate information can be incorporated via unitless extraction efficiency parameters, εj.

Notes: Summary In the laboratory and field, we examined how periphyton (food of snails) and predatory crayfish influenced snail distribution in Trout Lake, a permanent, northern Wisconsin lake. Laboratory experiments (with no crayfish) tested the importance of periphyton biomass in determining snail preference among rocks, and among rock, sand, and macrophyte substrates. Among rocks with four different amounts of periphyton, periphyton biomass and the number of Lymnaea emarginata, Physa spp., and Amnicola spp. were positively related. A similar, but non-significant, trend occurred for Helisoma anceps. A field experiment at a site in Trout Lake where predation risk was low confirmed the preference by snails for periphyton covered rocks; more snails colonized rocks with periphyton than rocks without. When given a choice of rock, sand, and macrophytes in the laboratory, L. emarginata preferred high periphyton biomass and rock. Laboratory and field results contrasted with the distribution of snails in Trout Lake; no snails occurred in areas with abundant periphyton-covered rocks, but snails were abundant nearby on scattered rocks with little periphyton. However, where snails were absent, crayfish were abundant (14.5 crayfish-trap−1-day−1), and where snails were abundant, crayfish were rare (3.2 crayfish-trap−1-day−1), suggesting that crayfish predation reduced snails. The hypothesis that the negative association between snail and periphyton biomass resulted from snail grazing was supported by the results of a field snail enclosure-exclosure experiment (1 m2 cages; n=3). All experiments and observations therefore suggest that: 1) crayfish predation is more important than a preference for high periphyton biomass in determining snail distribution in Trout Lake; 2) periphyton biomass is negtively related to snail grazing; and 3) crayfish had a positive indirect effect on periphyton by preying on grazing snails.
