    Notes: Abstract Plants pollinated and dispersed by different groups of birds offer different kinds of sugars in nectar and fruit pulp. The preferences and physiological traits of avian pollinators and seed dispersers are broadly correlated with the sugar composition of the nectar and fruit that they feed on and appear to have influenced the evolution of the sugar composition of the rewards that plants offer. Hummingbirds prefer sucrose whereas many nectar- and fruit-eating passerines prefer glucose and fructose. Preference for hexoses in passerines seems to be associated with poor sucrose assimilation resulting from two physiological mechanisms: lack of intestinal sucrase activity and fast passage rates. Sucrase activity absence appears to be restricted to a single phylogenetic group (the sturnid-muscicapid lineage). Fast passage rates seem to be characteristic of many small frugivores and to hinder the assimilation of complex nutrients that require hydrolysis before absorption. Hummingbirds have extremely specialized digestive traits that allow them to assimilate sucrose at high rates and with extremely high efficiency. These specialized digestive traits appear not to be present in many nectar-feeding passerines.

    Notes: Abstract White-beam synchrotron X-ray topography has been used to image dislocations and grain boundaries in high-purity columnar-grained polycrystalline ice. It was found that screw, 30° and 60° basal dislocations with 〈 1 1 ¯2 0 〉 Burgers vectors far outnumber other dislocations: near free surfaces, the dislocations were bent because of image forces. Circular prismatic dislocation loops with [0 0 0 1] Burgers vectors and dipoles were also found. These probably formed due to thermal shock. In one sample, the dislocation structures of three grains were clearly observed simultaneously, although no dislocations were visible in the boundaries.

    Notes: Abstract Room temperature tensile testing of the B2-structured compound Pd-52 at% In produced, a yield strength of 50 MPa, a fracture strength of 130 MPa, and limited tensile ductility (∼3%). Examination, in the transmission electron microscope, of the deformed microstructure indicated that it deforms by 〈001〉 {100} slip. Extra reflections and streaking were observed in selected area electron diffraction patterns, which appear to be a thin foil effect.

    Notes: Abstract The dislocation substructures in the DO3-structured alloys, Fe-34AI and Fe-28AI-6Cr, were examined by transmission electron microscopy following room temperature compression. In both alloys a small number of a〈001〉 dislocations, produced through the energetically favourable interaction of two pairs of antiphase boundary-coupled a/2〈1 1 1〉 dislocations, was observed. It was also found that, relative to the binary alloy, one effect of the chromium addition was to increase the B2 character of the alloy, but conversely to decrease the DO3 character. These results are rationalized on the basis of the atom site location of the chromium atoms in the DO3 structure.

    Notes: Abstract The increase of the amino acid concentration over different time intervals in artificial nectar (i.e., a sucrose solution) due to pollen contamination was investigated in four Californian plant species (Aesculus californica, Amsinckia lunaris, Brodiaea pulchella, Carduus pycnocephalus), which are important nectar resources for a Californian colony of the butterflyBattus philenor as well as for other insects. The increase of the amino acid concentration in the medium is different in all four species and seems to be determined by a variety of factors including permeability of the pollen grain wall and presence or absence of pores. The results suggest a passive diffusion process of the free pollen amino acids into the medium rather than an active release. Implications from the experiments forBattus philenor and for other nectar feeding pollinators are discussed. A possible complementary effect of free pollen and nectar amino acids is proposed for plant species in which pollen is likely to be knocked into nectar by their flower visitors. A possible evolutionary pathway from nectar feeding butterflies such asBattus philenor to the complex derived pollen feeding habit in theHeliconius butterflies is proposed.

    Notes: Abstract Ingots of three FeCo alloys, Fe-70 at % Co, e-50 at % Co and Fe-30% Co, were successfully extruded at 1000°C, then re-extruded at 750°C in order to produce fine-grained material. The resulting microstructures were examined both optically and by transmission electron microscopy. It was found that increasing the Fe: Co ratio produces less complete recrystallization: Fe-70 at % Co was completely recrystallized even after both the 1000 and 750°C extrusions, whilst Fe-30 at % Co was partially recrstallized after the 1000 °C extrusion. Single dislocations were present in the extruded alloys except single-extruded Fe-30 at % Co, in which dislocation pairs were observed.
