    Notes: We have studied photoluminescence (PL) properties of Ga+ and As+ implanted SiO2 films on Si substrate. After thermal annealing, zinc blende GaAs nanocrystals are formed in SiO2 films and several PL bands appear in the red and near-infrared spectral region. Defects and impurities in GaAs nanocrystals and SiO2 cause weak luminescence in the near-infrared spectral region at low temperatures. After low-energy deuterium implantation, the defect PL intensity decreases and the red PL from GaAs nanocrystals is clearly observed. It is demonstrated that GaAs/SiO2 nanocompostites with low defect density are fabricated by sequential ion implantation followed by thermal annealing and hydrogen passivation. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract A method was developed using aerial photographs to analyze forest canopy structure. Digital elevation models of both the land and canopy surface in a mesh of 5 m intervals were made from aerial photographs taken in winter (without tree leaves) and summer (with leaves), respectively, in a 60 ha area of temperate deciduous forest. The difference between the two elevation values at each point was regarded as the canopy height, and a canopy height profile was constructed. The estimated canopy structure was compared with that obtained by ground observations in a 6 ha part of the study area. Large gaps (〉100 m2) were adequately detected by the method, and the gap size distribution obtained was similar to the one observed on the ground. The method was found to be effective in analyzing the forest canopy structure of large areas, but it is not suitable for the detection of small gaps.

    Notes: Abstract A photochemical box model is used to simulate seasonal variations in concentrations of sulfur compounds at latitude 40° S. It is assumed that the hydroxyl radical (OH) addition reaction to sulfur in the dimethyl sulfide (DMS) molecule is the predominant pathway for methanesulfonic acid (MSA) production, and that the rate constant increases as the air temperature decreases. Concentration of the nitrate radical (NO3) is a function of the DMS flux, because the reaction of DMS with NO3 is the most important loss mechanism of NO3. While the diurnally averaged concentration of OH in winter is a factor of about 8 smaller than in summer, due to the weak photolysis process, the diurnally averaged concentration of NO3 in winter is a factor of about 4–5 larger than in summer, due to the decrease of DMS flux. Therefore, at middle and high latitudes in winter, atmospheric DMS is mainly oxidized by the reaction with NO3. The calculated ratio of the MSA to SO2 production rates is smaller in winter than in summer, and the MSA to non-sea-salt sulfate (nssSO4 2-) molar ratio varies seasonally. This result agrees with data on the seasonal variation of the MSA/nssSO4 2- molar ratio obtained at middle and high latitudes. The calculations indicate that during winter the reaction of DMS with NO3 is likely to be a more important sink of NOx (NO+NO2) than the reaction of NO2 with OH, and to serve as a significant pathway of the HNO3 production. If dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is produced through the OH addition reaction and is heterogeneously oxidized in aqueous solutions, half of the nssSO4 2- produced in summer may be through the oxidation process of DMSO. It is necessary to further investigate the oxidation products by the reaction of DMS with OH, and the possibility of the reaction of DMS with NO3 during winter.

    Notes: Abstract Population structure and ecological characteristics of component species of a riparian Ulmus-Quercus forest in central Japan were analyzed with special reference to riparian disturbance regime. Though the dbh distribution of the whole community was L-shaped, those of several component tree populations had several modes, suggesting intermittent regeneration periods in the past. Correlation of spatial distributions among tree populations and subpopulations showed 6 major groups reflecting riparian disturbances in the past and different establishment patterns among species. A cluster of small-sized tree populations (Salix sachalinensis, Alnus hirsuta and Populus maximowiczii 〈30 cm dbh) were distributed on the lower terrace along the active river channel, while large-sized subpopulations (dbh ≥60 cm) of Quercus crispula and Ulumus davidiana var. japonica occurred on the higher terrace. The Phellodendron amurense population also occurred on the higher terrace in small clumps though the trees were small (less than 55 cm dbh). Subpopulations of intermediate-sized individuals (30 ≤ dbh 〈 60 cm) of Q. crispula and U. davidiana var. japonica, together with Betula and Acer spp. populations occurred on the intermediate terrace. Dendrochronological analyses indicated that the large and intermediate-sized tree groups were established about 330 and 90 years ago, respectively, while the small-sized tree group established about 35 years ago. A survey of historical disturbances showed that these periods of establishment of the former two groups almost coincided with the historically major floods occurring in 1662 and 1902. However, the disturbance that resulted in the establishment of the youngest group could not be precisely identified. Thus, the forest is a mosaic of three differently-aged patches, which is closely related to the frequency and scale of riparian disturbances. Longevity of trees and the preferred conditions for seed germination and/or seedling establishment were particularly important for the guild structure in this forest community.

    Notes: The effects of platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) on DNA synthesis and mRNA expression of osteoblast markers in marrow stromal cells derived from adult (6 months) and old (24 months) rats were examined. Treatment of stromal cells from adult rats with dexamethasone induced the appearance of osteoblast-like cells. PDGF partially also inhibited the differentiation of stromal cells induced by dexamethasone. In cultures of serum-starved stromal cells, PDGF stimulated [3H]-thymidine incorporation into DNA in a dose-dependent manner with a maximum stimulation of 15-fold at 500 ng/ml. By comparison, insulin-like growth factor (IGF-I) has a small effect on [3H] -thymidine incorporation. The effect of PDGF and IGF-I on DNA synthesis was additive. Treatment of the confluent stromal cells from adult rats with PDGF increased the mRNA level of osteopontin fourfold without any significant effect on alkaline phosphatase and type I collagen mRNAs. In contrast, dexamethasone stimulated the mRNA expression of alkaline phosphatase, type I collagen, and osteopontin 2.1-, 2.3-, and 14-fold, respectively. Addition of PDGF to dexamethasone-treated cells failed to induce any further increase in osteopontin expression whereas the expression of alkaline phosphatase and type I collagen was partially reduced. The expression of osteocalcin mRNA was negligible in stromal cells but stimulated several fold by dexamethasone and 1,25(OH)2D3. PDGF inhibited drastically the elevation of osteocalcin mRNA. In contrast, IGF-I stimulated type I collagen expression 100% without any appreciable effect on the expression of osteopontin and alkaline phosphatase. The stimulatory effect of PDGF on osteopontin expression was augmented by IGF-I. Furthermore, PDGF attenuated the stimulatory effect of IGF-I on type I collagen expression. The responses of cultured cells from old rats to growth factors were also examined. PDGF or PDGF plus IGF-I increased [3H]-thymidine incorporation in stromal cells from old rats but to a lesser extent. However, PDGF was equally effective in stimulating osteopontin expression in cells from both adult and old rats. We concluded that PDGF is a potent mitogen but that the response of stromal cells from old rats is impaired. In addition, PDGF stimulates osteopontin expression in stromal cells and this effect is not age dependent. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
