Notes: We have grown Pr0.67Ca0.33MnO3 thin films on LaAlO3 using pulsed laser deposition. Below 50 K, a field induced insulator-metal transition results in changes in resistivity of at least 6 orders of magnitude. The field induced conducting state is metastable at low temperature. The temperature dependence of the resistivity exhibits considerable hysteresis in a field of 40 kOe but becomes reversible in a field of 80 kOe. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Commercial-grade zirconia powder (average, 10-μm particle size) compacts with 5 wt% of calcia have been sintered (batchwise) in a short time using an indigenously made low-cost extended arc thermal plasma heating (EATPH) system with varying plasma reactor operating parameters such as plasma power, plasmagen gas flow rate, and sintering time. XRD, SEM, laser particle size analyzer, and density studies were carried out to evaluate the structural, morphological, and physical properties of the sintered samples. It is observed from the above studies that the sintered products are fully monophasic and stabilized to the cubic system with 92% of the theoretical density in 15 min. A uniform grain size with no runaway grain growth occurred during sintering by our EATPH technique. The pore-grain structure mechanism in relation to the grain growth and density of the materials is discussed.

Notes: Abstract The temperature distribution in two regions and the location of moving interface during freezing in a finite domain is studied numerically. The differential equations governing the process of heat transfer in two regions are converted to initial value problem of vector matrix form. The solution of this initial value problem is utilized iteratively in the interface heat flux equation to determine interface location as well as the temperature distribution in two regions. The whole analysis is presented in a nondimensional form and the results thus obtained are discussed in detail.

Notes: Abstract Exact solutions for fully developed natural convection in open-ended vertical concentric annuli under a radial magnetic field are presented. Expressions for velocity field, temperature field, mass flow rate and skin-friction are given, under more general thermal boundary conditions. It is observed that both velocity as well as temperature of the fluid is more in case of isothermal condition compared with constant heat flux case when gap between cylinders is less or equal to radius of inner cylinder while reverse phenomena occur when the gap between cylinders is greater than radius of inner cylinder.

Notes: Abstract A new theory of shock dynamics has been developed in the form of a finite number of compatibility conditions along shock rays. It has been used to study the growth or decay of shock strength for accelerating or decelerating piston starting with a nonzero piston velocity. The results show good agreement with those obtained by Harten's high resolution TVD scheme.

Notes: Abstract We use near-field accelerograms recorded by the very broadband seismographic station of PNIG to locate the Pinotepa Nacional earthquake of 27 March, 1996 (Mw = 5.4) and to determine its source parameters. The data from PNIG on P and S arrival times, the azimuth of the arrival of P wave, and the angle of incidence of the P wave at the free surface permit the determination of the location (16.365° N, 98.303° W, depth = 18 km) and the origin time (12:34;48.35) of the earthquake. The displacement seismograms of the earthquake clearly shows contribution from the near-field terms. We compute a suite of synthetic seismograms for local mechanisms in the vicinity of the mechanism reported by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and compare them with the observed seismograms at PNIG. The point whose synthetics fit the observed records well has the following parameters: seismic moment, M0 = 1.2 × 1024 dyne-cm; source time function: a triangular pulse of 0.9 sec duration; fault plane: strike ϕ = 291°, dip δ = 10°, and rake λ = 80°. The location and the source parameters obtained from the analysis of PNIG records differ significantly from those reported by the USGS. This demonstrates again, what has been shown by some previous researchers, that high-quality recordings from a single near-field station can considerably improve the estimation of the source parameters of an earthquake. The main event was preceded by a subevent which occurred ∼0.18 sec before and whose seismic moment was ∼1% of the main event. It is possible that even this subevent was preceded by a couple of smaller subevents. This earthquake supports the body of evidence showing that an earthquake begins with a sequence of smaller subevents, cascading in the occurrence of the main event.
