    Notes: Abstract  In the seventh round of the Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements' International Measurement Evaluation Programme, 277 clinical laboratories from 17 countries participated. The measurands consisted of inorganic components, present at minor and trace level, in a human liquid serum. Results for calcium, chloride, copper, magnesium, sodium, selenium and zinc are reported and are compared to reference values established mainly by isotope dilution mass spectrometry and neutron-activation analysis. The overall conclusion is that routine measurements of total concentrations of the components by clinical laboratories are of high quality. The fraction of significant errors is small (0.5%) and the self-declared uncertainty values are generally fairly realistic. Results are further commented on with respect to the recent development in metrology in chemistry.

    Notes: Abstract This study investigates the reproductive periodicity and reproductive output of the seagrass Zostera novazelandica on two intertidal reefs. Peak numbers of flowering shoots occurred during March (late summer) of two years at both sites and no flowering shoots occurred during the winter months of July to September. There were greater numbers of flowering shoots in seagrass patches in the low intertidal zone (up to an average of 55 per 0.1 m2) compared to the middle (up to 20 per 0.1 m2) and upper (up to 9 per 0.1 m2) zones, and about three times greater reproductive output in patches associated with tidepools compared to those not bordering tidepools. The average number of inflorescences per shoot was 3.1 (±0.25) at one site vs 1.2 (±0.08) at the other, and showed a progressive decrease from the lower shore to the upper shore. Patches associated with tidepools had twice the number of inflorescences per shoot (2.8 ± 0.24) than patches not bordering tidepools (1.5 ± 0.16). The number of flowering shoots was highly correlated with leaf width, leaf length, and ramet density, while the leaf-area index decreased from the lower shore to the upper shore. The reproductive effort of plants, as measured by the percent biomass invested in flowering shoots during peak reproduction, was significantly different between sites, tidepool associations, and shore level. For all the variables measured, there was considerable spatial variation, with significant interaction terms between most factors investigated. In laboratory experiments, more inflorescences were produced at light intensities of 30 and 300 μE m−2 s−1 than at 100 μE m−2 s−1. At a salinity of 17‰, 1.5 × the number of flowers was produced than at 33‰, while none was formed at 70‰. Plants cultured at 5 °C had about three times the number of inflorescences than those at 15 °C, while none was formed at 25 °C.

    Notes: Abstract We examined the distribution and abundance of organisms on subtidal rocky reefs at nine sites around the Chatham Islands, a remote group 780 km east of southern New Zealand. We sampled five depth strata ranging from 1 to〈16 m to identify spatial patterns in the abundance of algae and invertebrates and to assess their variation within and among sites. This information is used to discuss hypotheses concerning community structure at this remote locality. Several patterns were apparent. The immediate subtidal was occupied by the southern bull kelp Durvillaea spp. A suite of 11 fucalean species were dominant to a depth of 10 m with an average abundance of 28 m-2, while one species, Carpophyllum flexuosum, occurred mostly in deeper water. Only two laminarian species of algae were present at the islands. The indigenous Lessonia tholiformis was abundant at 2.5 to 15 m and was not found in deeper water, while the giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera was abundant at two sites in 12 to 18 m. The commercially valuable abalone Haliotis iris was extremely abundant in shallow water, with an overall mean of 6 m-2 at 5 m. The sea urchin Evechinus chloroticus was common, but reached high densities only in small (〈25 m2) patches. The characteristic urchin-dominated zones reported in kelp beds world-wide were not seen. There was considerable site-to-site variation in the occurrence and abundance of individual species. Some differences between sites were associated with shelter from swell (e.g. M. pyrifera was found only in sheltered sites) and physical habitat (e.g. juvenile H. iris were found only beneath boulders inshore), but much of the variation could not be explained by physical or depth-related factors alone. We hypothesize that the differences in these kelp bed assemblages compared to mainland New Zealand are partially due to the high degree of endemism at the Chatham Islands. Local variation cannot be explained by herbivory, and is most likely the result of the various life-history characteristics of the major habitat-forming species, the large brown algae.

    Notes: Abstract Two bioavailability studies of S(+)-ibuprofen (dexibuprofen) were conducted in healthy volunteers to define the relationship between the bioavailability of the drug after administration of dexibuprofen alone or as part of ibuprofen racemate. Enantioselective plasma drug analysis was used throughout. In the first study, the bioavailability of dexibuprofen from a 400 mg tablet formulation was compared with that from 400 mg in aqueous solution. The tablet formulation did not influence the bioavailability of the drug and dexibuprofen was well absorbed from the gastro-intestinal tract. The second study was divided into three identical parts. Bioavailability of dexibuprofen 200, 400 and 600 mg was compared with its bioavailability from ibuprofen racemate 400, 800 and 1200 mg. The second study showed that the mean relative bioavailability of dexibuprofen to ibuprofen racemate was 0.66, thus enabling the estimation of clinically useful dexibuprofen doses from the usual doses of the racemate. The 95% confidence interval limits did not include 0.5, leading to the conclusion that administering half of the racemate dose would not provide patients with an adequate amount of therapeutically active drug.

    Notes: The Raman band of the stretching vibration of interstitial oxygen molecules in glassy SiO2 is found at 1548.5±1 cm−1. By comparison with the Raman spectrum of gaseous O2 (Q band at 1555.5 cm−1), the concentration of the interstitial O2 molecules in Suprasil W1 synthetic fused silica is estimated as (8±3.5)×1017 (molecules O2)/cm3. This value is further used to calibrate the intensity of the Nd-YAG laser-excited O2 a→X infrared photoluminescence band at 1272.2 nm against the intensity of the fundamental Raman bands of glassy SiO2. In this way, quantitative measurements of O2 concentrations in SiO2 down to at least (approximate)1016 molecules/cm3 are possible. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract  A highly accurate gas chromatographic analytical method has been developed for the determination of the composition of gas mixtures. It was tested using a reference gas as an example consisting of 3.5% of CO, 14% of CO2, 0.2% of propane and residual N2 intended for the use in vehicle emission measurements. The method is based on comparison measurements with samples of a calibration gas, whose composition is iteratively adapted to that of the sample investigated using a gravimetric gas mixing method. For the gas chromatographic measurement, a molecular sieve column and a polymer column are used in parallel and in isothermal operation. All gas components can be determined by a single gas chromatographic measurement, and the relative uncertainty of measurement achievable is ?0.4%.

    Notes: Abstract The salinity tolerance of two dominant Antarctic planktic copepods (Calanus propinquus and Metridia gerlachei) was tested over a range from 34 to 85 PSU and compared with that of sympagic turbellarians. The copepods survived only at a salinity of 34, higher salinities causing death within days. The turbellarians survived at salinities up to 75. The data imply that C. propinquus and M. gerlachei will not survive incorporation into newly forming sea ice because of the increasing brine salinity in new ice.
