    Notes: Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAK pili and Candida albicans fimbriae are adhesins present on the microbial cell surfaces which mediate binding to epithelial cell-surface receptors. The receptor-binding domain (adhesintope) of the PAK pilus adhesin has been shown previously to reside in the carboxy-terminal disulphide-bonded region of P. aeruginosa pilin (PAK128-144). The delineation of the C. albicans fimbrial adhesintope was investigated in these studies using synthetic peptides which correspond to the whole (PAK128-144) or part of (PAK134-140) adhesintope of the PAK pilus and their respective anti-peptide antisera and biotinylated PAK pili (Bt-PAK pili), fimbriae (Bt-fimbriae), P. aeruginosa whole cells (Bt-P. aeruginosa) and C. albicans whole cells (Bt-C. albicans). The results from these studies confirmed that a structurally conserved motif akin to the PAK(128-144) peptide sequence is present in C. albicans fimbrial adhesin and that the seven-amino-acid residue PAK(134-140) sequence plays an important role in forming the adhesintope for both P. aeruginosa PAK pilus and C. albicans fimbrial adhesins.

    Notes: Abstract Complexity in and around the A and a mating type idiomorphs in Neurospora crassa was examined. Six sets of transcripts surrounding the idiomorphs were identified by Northern analysis. Several different patterns of regulation were observed. The two pairs of transcripts closest to the centromere-proximal idiomorph flanks (variable regions) exhibited mating type-specific size differences. DNA sequence was obtained for the region surrounding the four transcripts which showed mating type-specific size and expression. One of these pairs encoded amino acid sequences highly similar to a domain present in the plasma membrane ATPase. A mutant allele of one of these genes was induced by repeat-induced point mutation (RIP), which resulted in altered perithecial development and the elimination of ascospore production. These transcripts comprise a cluster of genes which may be involved in the control of mating and sexual development in N. crassa.

    Notes: Abstract Magnesium self-diffusion coefficients were determined experimentally for diffusion parallel to each of the three crystallographic directions in natural orthoenstatite (En88Fs12). Experiments were conducted at 1 atm in CO-CO2 gas mixing furnaces, which provided oxygen fugacities equivalent to the iron-wüstite buffer. Diffusion of 25Mg was induced in polished samples of oriented orthoenstatite using a film of isotopically enriched 25MgO as the source material. Very short (〈0.15 μm) diffusional penetration profiles were measured by ion microprobe depth profiling. The diffusion coefficients determined for four temperatures (900, 850, 800, 750 °C) provide the activation energies, E a , and frequency factors, D o, where D = D o exp (−E a /RT) for Mg self-diffusion parallel to each crystallographic direction: a-axis, E a  = 360 ± 52 kJ/mole and D o = 1.10 × 10−4 m2/s; b-axis, E a  = 339 ± 77 kJ/mole and D o = 6.93 × 10−6 m2/s and c-axis, E a  = 265 ± 66 kJ/mole and D o = 4.34 × 10−9 m2/s. In this temperature range, any possible anisotropy of cation diffusion is very small, however the activation energy for diffusion parallel to the c-axis (001) is the lowest and the activation energies for diffusion parallel to the a-axis (100) and b-axis (010) are higher. Application of these diffusion results to the silicate phases of the Lowicz mesosiderite meteorite provides cooling rates for the silicate portion of the meteorite (4–11 °C/100 years) that are similar, although slower, to previous estimates. These silicate cooling rates are still several orders of magnitude faster than the cooling rates (0.1 °C/106 years) for the metal portions.

    Notes: Abstract The contributions of this paper are twofold. First, an automatic tool-based approach is described to bound worst-case data cache performance. The approach works on fully optimized code, performs the analysis over the entire control flow of a program, detects and exploits both spatial and temporal locality within data references, and produces results typically within a few seconds. Results obtained by running the system on representative programs are presented and indicate that timing analysis of data cache behavior usually results in significantly tighter worst-case performance predictions. Second, a method to deal with realistic cache filling approaches, namely wrap-around-filling for cache misses, is presented as an extension to pipeline analysis. Results indicate that worst-case timing predictions become significantly tighter when wrap-around-fill analysis is performed. Overall, the contribution of this paper is a comprehensive report on methods and results of worst-case timing analysis for data caches and wrap-around caches. The approach taken is unique and provides a considerable step toward realistic worst-case execution time prediction of contemporary architectures and its use in schedulability analysis for hard real-time systems.

    Notes: The secreted signalling molecule encoded by the wntl gene and the paired box-containing pax2 gene are thought to play an integral role in patterning the zebrafish rostral nervous system. Using a double-label analysis, we compare the expression patterns of wnt1 RNA and pax2 protein during zebrafish embryogenesis to determine whether they were expressed in identical or overlapping patterns in individual embryos. During gastrulation, wntl RNA was detected in a pattern similar but not identical to the pax2 protein. Later, wntl and pax2 co-localize to the midbrain-hindbrain boundary. Exogenous retinoic acid, a teratogen that is known to affect the formation of the midbrain-hindbrain boundary, has a profound affect on both wntl and pax2 expression at gastrulation. Furthermore, when pax2 is overexpressed in zebrafish embryos, the wntl pattern of expression expands ventrally in the prospective rostral neuroepithelium. Despite the widespread and random distribution of exogenous pax2 RNA, it alone is unable to induce wntl expression in other ec-topic sites. These results are consistent with the coordinate expression of wntl and pax2 being in a pathway responsible for establishing the midbrain-hindbrain boundary and support the earlier interpretation that pax2 may regulate wntl expression [Krauss et al., 1992], although only in a subset of embryonic cells. These data suggest that a predisposition for the regionalization of the central nervous system exists at gastrulation. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
