    Notes: Given the tunability of synchrotron radiation, photoemission spectroscopy can be used to monitor the growth modes of thin films in UHV. Cross-section effects such as Cooper minima and resonant photoemission can be exploited to maximize the adsorbate signal and minimize that from the substrate. Under favourable circumstances growth can be monitored in real time at coverages of 〈1%. As an example the growth of Gd on W(110) is investigated.

    Notes: Angle-resolved UV photoemission spectroscopy has been used to investigate the interaction of CO with Gd films, grown on W(110). The results suggest the CO absorbs dissociatively, initially forming Gd2O3, with subsequent catalytic oxidation of CO to form carbonate.

    Notes: W 4f core-level spectra of Gd films on W(110) show components which can be identified as being due to bulk and interface W. The results suggest that the W/Gd interface is abrupt, i.e. no interface alloying occurs. At submonolayer coverages a further component is seen which is attributable to intermediate (n × 2) phases.

    Notes: Abstract A cDNA encoding a protein kinase, which may be involved in the wound signal transduction pathway, was isolated from Nicotiana tabacum. The cDNA, named WAPK, is 1227 bp in length and contains an ORF of 1017 bp. The ORF encodes a polypeptide of 339 amino acids, with a calculated molecular mass of 38234 Da. Analysis of the deduced amino acid sequence shows that the N-terminal region of WAPK contains a catalytic region composed of eleven subdomains which are typically found in Ser/Thr protein kinases. This region shows 78–84% sequence identity with similar regions of abscisic acid (ABA)-induced and external-stimuli-responsive protein kinases. However, the C-terminal region of WAPK shows little homology with similar regions of Ser/Thr protein kinases, except for a 16-amino acid stretch near the end of the catalytic domain. Kinase assays using a WAPK fusion protein expressed in E. coli revealed that WAPK autophosphorylates on serine residue(s). The WAPK gene is predominantly expressed in flowers, moderately in roots, and poorly in leaves. Transcripts were not detected in stems. The WAPK gene was induced by wounding (within 1.5 h), by abscisic acid (within 0.5 h), and by methyl jasmonate (within 2 h). The induction pattern of WAPK mRNA upon wounding was not affected by treatment with diethyldithiocarbamic acid, a reagent which inhibits jasmonic acid biosynthesis. These results suggest that the WAPK gene is regulated by ABA in the wound signal transduction pathway.

    Notes: Abstract Ab initio total energy calculations based on the local density approximation (LDA) and the generalised gradient approximation (GGA) of density functional theory have been performed for brucite, Mg(OH)2, diaspore, AlOOH and hypothetical hydrous wadsleyite, Mg7Si4O14(OH)2. The use of a general gradient approximation (GGA) is essential to obtain a good agreement (≈ 1%) of the calculated lattice parameters to diffraction data. The calculated fractional coordinates of brucite and diaspore are in good agreement (≈ 1.5%) with experimental data. The angle of the non-linear hydrogen bond in diaspore is reproduced well, and the calculated Raman active OH stretching frequency in brucite is in very good agreement with spectroscopic data. There are no significant differences between the calculated fractional coordinates and the second derivative of the energy when GGA is used instead of standard LDA. It is concluded that the description of the static and the dynamic behavior of the OH groups in these hydroxides is very good. It is therefore inferred that the parameter free model is predictive and it has been used to evaluate a hypothetical structure of hydrous wadsleyite. The model reproduces the unusual Si-O bond length of 1.7 Å, observed in β-Mg2SiO4. It predicts an O-H distance of 0.97 Å, which is significantly shorter than the distance obtained from earlier model calculations.

    Notes: Abstract While the number of leaf-specific expressed genes is estimated to be approximately 6,000, an overview of gene diversity and expression patterns in the leaf of oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) has not yet been reported. In an effort to understand gene expression patterns and to identify new genes, we generated 754 expressed sequence tags (ESTs) from the leaf of B. napus. By comparing them to public databases, we showed that 204 of the ESTs (27.1%) have sequence homology to known genes, with 52 of them (6.9%) matching to genes not previously studied in B. napus. The most abundant transcripts were found to be involved in photosynthesis and energy metabolism. When compared with maize leaf ESTs and rice leaf ESTs, the pattern of gene expression was different depending on the developmental stages of the leaf.

    Notes: Abstract The applicability of a chlorophyll fluorescence assay for kanamycin (Km) resistance screening in transgenic tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) and Arabidopsis thaliana plants was investigated. In wild-type leaves incubated in the presence of 200 mg/l Km, a decrease in maximum variable fluorescence ((Fv)m) and a significant increase in constant fluorescence (Fo) were observed. Using (Fv)m/Fo as a screening parameter, we were able to distinguish Km-treated samples from untreated samples within 4 days. This parameter was applied to Km resistance screening using tobacco plants transformed with the nptII gene via Agrobacterium. Among 74 shoots selected on medium containing 200 mg/l Km, 37 plants were scored as Km sensitive by the chlorophyll fluorescence assay. These 74 scorings proved to be accurate, as reconfirmed by (1) polymerase chain reaction amplification of the transgene, (2) enzymatic assay of neomycin phosphotransferase and (3) leaf disc assay. Using the chlorophyll fluorescence assay, we could also screen 3-week old Arabidopsis plants carrying the nptII gene. These results clearly demonstrate the reliability and efficiency of this nondestructive assay for Km resistance screening of transgenic plants.

    Notes: Summary A new diamine monomer, N,N′-bis(4-aminophenyl)-2,5-(diisopropoxycarbony)benzene-1,4-dicarboxamide was synthesized. Using the diamine, several alternating copolyimide precursors were successfully synthesized by its condensation polymerization with dianhydrides. The structure and properties (mechanical properties and thermal expansivity) of alternating copolyimides imidized thermally were characterized, and compared with those of the corresponding random copolyimides prepared from the copoly(amic acid)s. The alternating copolyimides exhibited relatively higher chain order and in-plane orientation in films than the random copolyimides. The higher chain order and in-plane orientation led to the higher tensile modulus and lower thermal expansivity in the alternating copolyimides. Such effect of comonomer sequence was found to be highly pronounced in copolyimides consisting of comonomers which have a large difference in the chain rigidity. It was demonstrated in this study that the formation of alternating copolyimides is a suitable route to improve the performance of properties.

    Notes: Abstract The linear electrooptic (EO) effect of poled polymer thin film is measured in the coplanar-electrode structure. The optical geometry of the coplanar-electrode thin-film setup is analysed theoretically to find a relationship between the linear optical parameters and the EO modulation intensity. EO modulated intensity is measured as a function of the direction of incident light polarization relative to the macroscopic optic axis, also as a function of optical bias determined by quarter-wave plate. Comparison of experimental measurements with the theoretical analysis shows good agreement.
