    Notizen: Giant magnetoimpedance (GMI) behavior at 0.25 MHz has been studied for a composite wire consisting of a 1 μm thick Co6Fe20Ni74 magnetic layer electroplated onto a 0.1 mm diam CuBe nonmagnetic wire. This has been done for as-deposited samples as well as after annealing under dc and ac axial magnetic fields. In the optimum conditions, a maximum GMI of 150% is achieved. The observed GMI hysteresis in the as-prepared state decreases for high driving current used to measure the MI itself. Such hysteresis, to be avoided in technological applications, is also very much reduced after ac field annealing. GMI characteristics are analyzed considering the domain-wall stabilization occurring after the annealing treatments. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The magnetic and magnetoresistive properties of the Ln0.7Pb0.3Mn1−xFexO3 (Ln=La, Nd, and x=0, 0.1) perovskites, prepared by the solgel low temperature method, have been studied. In all cases the exact stoichiometry is different from the nominal one probably due to the presence of cation vacancies. All the phases exhibit ferromagnetic behavior with Tc values ranging form 345 K observed for La0.7Pb0.3MnO3 to 75 K for Nd0.7Pb0.3Mn0.9Fe0.1O3. The 10% Fe contribution lowers the Tc by about 130 K in the La compound and 90 K in the Nd one. These results can be interpreted in terms of antiferromagnetic coupling between Mn and Fe. However, the influence of the Nd ions is not well known although it seems not ordered down to 10 K. The magnetoresistence [MR=ΔR/R(0)] measured at 6 T in pellets of pressed powder reaches values of about 80% around the magnetic transition. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Abstract  We monitored the cover and seed bank response of shrubs, perennial herbs, and ephemeral plants to experimental exclusion of both the principal rodent herbivore, Octodon degus, and its vertebrate predators from 1989 to 1994 in a semiarid Chilean mediterranean site. Although both richness and species composition of the plant community at the study site were largely determined by abiotic factors (mainly rainfall and soil nutrients), predator and herbivore exclusion had significant effects on the relative abundance of several plant species. Experimental exclusion of herbivores was associated with increased cover of some shrubs and a perennial grass, and decreased cover and seed densities of several ephemerals, especially those exotic or restricted to areas underneath shrubs. Herbivores apparently reduced shrubs through browsing and indirectly affected herb cover and seed densities by opening up areas under shrubs and/or modifying physical and chemical conditions of the soil. Plant responses to predator exclusion were less clear. Nevertheless, higher cover of some shrubs and ephemerals in the presence of predators suggests tritrophic effects through changes in small mammal densities and/or foraging behavior.

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Zusammenfassung Es wird über die Synthese und Charakterisierung von zwei neuen Liganden, die durch Kondensation von Benzoylacetylaceton und N-Benzylethylendiamin im Molverhältnis 1:1 und 1:2 entstehen, sowie über die Bildung einiger ihrer Metallkomplexe berichtet. DieSchiffsche Base1 (1:1) ist ein potentieller tetradentater, zur Bildung von Zweikernkomplexen geeigneter Ligand, der über zwei benachbarte Koordinationsbereiche NNO(X) (X=Cl, NO3) und OO(XY) verfügt, wobeiX undY exogene Donoratome repräsentieren. Die Reaktion von1 mit PdCl 4 2− gibt den planarquadratischen Einkernkomplex3a, dessen Metallion von einer NNO-Umgebung und Cl− koordiniert ist. Die Röntgenstrukturanalyse von3a zeigt, daß durch die Koordination des Pd-Ions kein Raum für die Koordination eines zweiten Metallions mit OO(Y, Y)-Umgebung zur Verfügung steht. Vielmehr kommt es zur Ausbildung einer Wasserstoffbrückenbindung, dessen Proton durch eine typische “weiche Säure”, wie Pd2+, nicht verdrängt wird.1 reagiert mit Ni(II)- und Cu(II)-nitrat, wobei wieder nur einkernige Komplexe (3b, c) entstehen (X=NO3). DieSchiffsche Base4 ist ein potentieller Ligand für Zweikernkomplexe.4 entsteht als zweikerniger Hg(II)-Komplex5 bei der Umsetzung von Benzoylaetylaceton und dem Amin in Gegenwart von HgCl2.
    Notizen: Summary The synthesis and characterization of two new ligands derived from the 1:1 and 1:2Schiff base condensation of benzoylacetylacetone with N-benzylethylenediamine as well as some of their metal complexes are reported. The 1:1Schiff base1 is a potential tetradentate, binucleating ligand with two adjacent coordination sites NNO(X) (X=Cl, NO3) and OO(XY), whereX andY are exogenic donor atoms. The reaction of1 with PdCl 4 2− affords a mononuclear, square-planar complex3a with the metal atom coordinated to the NNO site of1 and to Cl−. The X-ray structure of this complex shows that the coordination of the Pd atom by an NNO (Cl) moiety reduces the available space in OO(XY) site for coordinating another metal atom; moreover, the small distance between the two oxygen atoms of the “hard base” site OO(XY) suggests the presence of hydrogen bonding and therefore this proton is not easily displaced by a typical soft acid such as Pd2+. When the same ligand reacts with Ni(II) or Cu(II) nitrates, again only mononuclear complexes3b and3c are obtained with the same donor atoms as for the Pd(II) complex but withX=NO3. The 1:2Schiff base4, a potentially binucleating ligand with two non-equivalent coordination sites NNO(X), was not isolated as a free ligand. However, it gave the binuclear Hg(II) complex5 by the reaction of benzoylacetylacetone and N-benzylethylenediamine in the presence of HgCl2.

    Notizen: Myotoxin II, a myotoxic calcium-independent phospholipase-like protein isolated from the venom of Bothrops asper, possesses no detectable phospholipase activity. The crystal structure has been determined and refined at 2.8 Å to an R-factor of 16.5% (F 〉 3σ) with excellent stereochemistry. Amino-acid differences between catalytically active phospholipases and myotoxin II in the Ca2+-binding region, specifically the substitutions Tyr28→Asn, Gly32→Leu and Asp49→Lys, result in an altered local conformation. The key difference is that the ε-amino group of Lys49 fills the site normally occupied by the calcium ion in catalytically active phospholipases. In contrast to the homologous monomeric Lys49 variant from Agkistrodon piscivorus piscivorus, myotoxin II is present as a dimer both in solution and in the crystalline state. The two molecules in the asymmetric unit are related by a nearly perfect twofold axis, yet the dimer is radically different from the dimer formed by the phospholipase from Crotalus atrox. Whereas in C. atrox the dimer interface occludes the active sites, in myotoxin II they are exposed to solvent.

    Notizen: Abstract A simple and rapid method was developed for the simultaneous determination of fatty acids, organochlorine pesticides, and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners in the same sample in order to explore possible connections between levels of contaminants and fatty acid composition. The method was applied to samples of melon, cerebrum, cerebellum, lung, liver, kidneys, and skeletal muscle obtained from 5 male and 5 female striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) found stranded in 1990 in the northeastern Spanish coasts during the morbillivirus epizootic that affected this cetacean in the Mediterranean Sea. The results indicate that PCBs were dominant in all tissues, with the highest geometric mean concentration being found in melon (903 μg g−1 wet wt); ΣDDTs were also found at high concentrations (111 μg g−1 wet wt, in melon). Statistical analysis indicate that organochlorine concentration was correlated with the fatty acid composition of tissues, although some of these variations can be interpreted as a consequence of a shift in the diet produced in the striped dolphin population. However, other changes such as the negative correlation with arachidonic acid may suggest that the eicosanoid production could have been affected by the extremely high concentrations of PCBs and ΣDDTs.

    Notizen: Abstract In salmonid fishes, the role of insulin and insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) in the regulation of ovarian function is not well understood. Recently, we reported that isolated follicular layers of the preovulatory ovarian follicle of coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) have specific receptors for insulin and IGF-I and that IGF-I modulates steroid production in the follicular layers. In the present study we have investigated the structural and functional characteristics of insulin and IGF-I receptors in the ovary of brown trout (Salmo trutta) and the changes in insulin and IGF-I binding throughout the reproductive cycle of this species. The specific binding for IGF-I was 8- to 15-fold higher than the specific binding for insulin. IGF-I receptors were also more specific than insulin receptors because unlabeled insulin displaced bound radiolabeled insulin at concentrations 40- to 80-fold lower than unlabeled IGF-I; whereas, unlabeled IGF-I displaced bound radiolabeled IGF-I at concentrations 4000- to 8000-fold lower than unlabeled insulin. Insulin and IGF-I receptors from the brown trout ovary were composed of 120 kDa α-subunits and 90 kDa β-subunits, which underwent autophosphorylation in a concentration-dependent manner. Receptor tyrosine kinase activity was also stimulated in a concentration-dependent manner by insulin and IGF-I. When ovarian insulin and IGF-I binding was determined from mid-vitellogenesis (March) until ovulation (November), maximal binding for both peptides was detected in mid-vitellogenesis and gradually decreased until the end of vitellogenesis (August). In the preovulatory period (October), a small increase of insulin and IGF-I binding was observed. After ovulation, insulin binding was no longer detectable and IGF-I binding was very low. These results suggest that insulin and IGF-I receptors in the salmonid ovary follow the structural pattern described in other vertebrate species and that insulin and IGF-I could be involved in the regulation of ovarian function during reproductive stages other than the preovulatory period.

    Notizen: Abstract The effect of five constant temperatures (16, 22, 26, 31 and 36°C) on biological (survival and duration of developmental stages, fecundity and longevity of females, sex-ratio) and demographic parameters (R o , G, r m and λ) of the two main phytophagous mites that attack cassava in Africa,Mononychellus progresivus Doreste andOligonychus gossypii (Zacher), was studied in the laboratory. Experiments were performed simultaneously on the two mite species reared on the same cassava variety (1M20) under controlled conditions: 70±10% r.h. and 12L∶12D. The lower thermal threshold was 13°C forM. progresivus and 11°C forO. gossypii. Both species developed in the range from 22 to 36°C. The shortest development time was obtained at 31°C for both species; it was 7.2 days forM. progresivus and 8.2 days forO. gossypii. Maximum fecundity of both species was recorded at 26°C with 42.1 eggs forM. progresivus and 36.3 eggs forO. gossypii The highest intrinsic rate of increase (r m ) was obtained at 31°C for both species with 0.289 and 0.214 forM. progresivus andO. gossypii, respectively.

    Notizen: Abstract Thermal decomposition of various synthetic manganese oxides (MnO, Mn3O4, Mn2O3, MnOOH) and a natural manganese dioxide (MnO2) from Gabon was studied with the help of termogravimetry in inert, oxidizing and reducing atmospheres. The compounds were characterized by XRD and electrochemical activity was tested by cyclic voltammetry using a carbon paste electrode. The natural manganese dioxide showed the best oxidizing and reducing capacity, confirmed by the lower temperatures of the transitions, the extent of the reactions and electrochemical performance in cyclic voltammograms.
