    Notes: Abstract —A seismological characterization of crust and upper mantle can refer to large-scale averages of seismic velocities or to fluctuations of elastic parameters. Large is understood here relative to the wavelength used to probe the earth.¶In this paper we try to characterize crust and upper mantle by the fluctuations in media properties rather than by their average velocities. As such it becomes evident that different scales of heterogeneities prevail in different layers of crust and mantle. Although we cannot provide final models and an explanation of why these different scales exist, we believe that scales of inhomogeneities carry significant information regarding the tectonic processes that have affected the lower crust, the lithospheric and the sublithospheric upper mantle.¶We focus on four different types of small-scale inhomogeneities (1) the characteristics of the lower crust, (2) velocity fluctuations in the uppermost mantle, (3) scattering in the lowermost lithosphere and on (4) heterogeneities in the mantle transition zone.

    Notes: Complex (dielectric) permittivity spectra of aqueous solutions of the monosaccharides D-Xylose, D-Galactose, D-Glucose, D-Fructose, Methyl-β-D-xylose, and Methyl-β-D-glucose, as well as the disaccharides D-Lactose, D-Maltose, and D-Sucrose have been measured. In order to avoid any systematic errors, various experimental setups, each matched to a particular measuring range, have been used to cover the frequency domain from 300 kHz to 40 GHz. In some characteristic details our spectra for maltose solutions deviate from those recently reported by Weingärtner et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 115, 1463 (2001)]. The monosaccharide spectra at c=1 mol/l and the disaccharide spectra at c≤0.5 mol/l reveal a rather homogeneous relaxation of the carbohydrate and water dipole moments, which can be well represented by a Cole–Cole relaxation time distribution. At higher solute concentration the dielectric spectra are favorably represented by two relaxation terms, though interpolation of the experimental data by the Cole–Cole spectral function is possible within the limits of errors. There are indications that these terms might be due to local fluctuations in the carbohydrate concentration, in conformity with previous ultrasonic spectra of monosaccharide solutions.© 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The Massif Central, the most significant geomorphological unit of the Hercynian belt in France, is characterized by graben structures which are part of the European Cenozoic Rift System (ECRIS) and also by distinct volcanic episodes, the most recent dated at 20 Ma to 4000 years BP. In order to study the lithosphere-asthenosphere system beneath this volcanic area, we performed a teleseismic field experiment.During a six-month period, a joint French-German team operated a network of 79 mobile short-period seismic stations in addition to the 14 permanent stations. Inversion of P-wave traveltime residuals of teleseismic events recorded by this dense array yielded a detailed image of the 3-D velocity structure beneath the Massif Central down to 180 km depth. The upper 60 km of the lithosphere displays strong lateral heterogeneities and shows a remarkable correlation between the volcanic provinces and the negative velocity perturbations. The 3-D model reveals two channels of low velocities, interpreted as the remaining thermal signature of magma ascent following large lithospheric fractures inherited from Hercynian time and reactivated during Oligocene times. The teleseismic inversion model yields no indication of a low-velocity zone in the mantle associated with the graben structures proper. The observation of smaller velocity perturbations and a change in the shape of the velocity pattern in the 60–100 km depth range indicates a smooth transition from the lithosphere to the asthenosphere, thus giving an idea of the lithosphere thickness. A broad volume of low velocities having a diameter of about 200 km from 100 km depth to the bottom of the model is present beneath the Massif Central. This body is likely to be the source responsible for the volcanism. It could be interpreted as the top of a plume-type structure which is now in its cooling phase.

    Notes: This paper presents an updated interpretation of seismic anisotropy within the uppermost mantle of southern Germany. The dense network of reversed and crossing refraction profiles in this area made it possible to observe almost 900 traveltimes of the Pn phase that could be effectively used in a time-term analysis to determine horizontal velocity distribution immediately below the Moho. For 12 crossing profiles, amplitude ratios of the Pn phase compared to the dominant crustal phase were utilized to resolve azimuthally dependent velocity gradients with depth. A P-wave anisotropy of 3–4 per cent in a horizontal plane immediately below the Moho at a depth of 30 km, increasing to 11 per cent at a depth of 40 km, was determined. For the axis of the highest velocity of about 8.03 km s−1 at a depth of 30 km a direction of N31°F was obtained. The azimuthal dependence of the observed Pn amplitude is explained by an azimuth-dependent sub-Moho velocity gradient decreasing from 0.06 s−1 in the fast direction to 0 s−1 in the slow direction of horizontal P-wave velocity. From the seismic results in this study a petrological model suggesting a change of modal composition and percentage of oriented olivine with depth was derived.

    Notes: A striking feature of Russian long-range seismic refraction data from Peaceful Nuclear Explosions is the observation of a high-frequency teleseismic Pn, phase, which travels with a group velocity of 8.0 km s-1 out to distances of several thousands of kilometres. Modelling using the reflectivity method shows that this phase can be understood as the response of an upper mantle that contains random RMS velocity fluctuations of about ±4 per cent superimposed on a positive velocity gradient. This class of model explains the existence of the teleseismic Pn, its high-frequency content and its coda length. A teleseismic Pn can only be generated if velocity flucluations are strong enough to cause multiple scattering and occur on a subwavelength scale. Cross-correlation properties of P- and S-wave velocity fluctuations exert a substantial influence on the wavefield. A completely unexpected phase can be observed if the fluctuations are imposed on a negative gradient

    Description: Smoothing algorithms provide a means of identifying significant patterns in sets of orientated data, eliminating local perturvations within the observations and predicting patterns of orientated data in places which lack observations. Here we present the smoothing of orientation data with a distance-related method of data weighting as an alternative to previous weighting algorithms. The data weighting and smoothing method presented here in theory and practice is developed on the basis of a statistical smoothing algorithm. The method can be applied to orientation data of 180{degrees} periodicity such as maximum horizontal tectonic stresses (SH) as compiled in the World Stress Map database. Our smoothing algorithm enables discrimination between local (〈250 km of lateral extent) and regional (c. 250-5000 km of lateral extent) stress fields, and allows comparison of SH with other directional data such as fault trends or strain data. We present smoothed stress maps for northeastern America, the Himalayas and western Europe. By varying the scale and smoothing parameters we illustrate their influence on the accuracy and smoothness. We give recommendations for the appropriate choice of these parameters.

    Description: Tectonic stress is one of the fundamental data sets in Earth sciences comparable with topography, gravity, heat flow and others. The importance of stress observations for both academic research (e.g. geodynamics, plate tectonics) and applied sciences (e.g. hydrocarbon production, civil engineering) proves the necessity of a project like the World Stress Map for compiling and making available stress data on a global scale. The World Stress Map project offers not only free access to this global database via the Internet, but also continues in its effort to expand and improve the database, to develop new quality criteria, and to initiate topical research projects. In this paper we present (a) the new release of the World Stress Map, (b) expanded quality ranking schemes for borehole breakouts and geological indicators, (c) new stress indicators (drilling-induced fractures, borehole slotter data) and their quality ranking schemes, and (d) examples for the application of tectonic stress data.
