    Notes: Abstract We analyse spectral ratio of the coda of doublets of microearthquakes. Our purpose is to find evidence for temporal changes of the attenuation in the crust before a large magnitude earthquake. A Moving Window Cross Spectral analysis of the coda of doublets gives a plot of the spectral ratio as a function of lapse time along the seismogram, for several frequency bands (SR(T, f) plot). From a certain pattern in theSR(T, f) plot, we should infer a temporal change in coda attenuation. Several doublets recorded in Central California by the USGS network are analysed. Using events very close in time from one another, we show that the radiation pattern can be different enough to induce important variations in the spectral ratio of the first arrivals and of the coda. Another doublet exhibits a strong variation of the low frequencies for stations in the region of Hollister (California), wherePhillips andAki (1986) have noted a strong amplification of low frequencies, that they attribute to site effects on unconsolidated sediments in the fault zone. These variations could be related to slight changes in local conditions (creep, or water table). On the other hand, some doublets, in the vicinity and close in time to the August 1979 Coyote Lake Earthquake (M=5.9), show no variation inSR(T, f) related to this earthquake: this proves that there was no major change in attenuation in the crust preceding this large shock. If a change occurred, it should have been confined to a very limited region, which was not sampled by the many paths we studied. The employed method probably provides today the most accurate estimation of spectral ratio in the coda of microearthquakes. It shows that there are numerous kinds of variations and that it is not straightforward to relate them to coda attenuation changes only. Also, we must be circumspect when dealing with the coda of microearthquakes in relation to forecasting earthquakes.

    Notes: Abstract Seismic stations, with automatic P-picking and satellite retransmission were set up on Mount Etna following the eruption started on March 1983. Positions of the stations were chosen in order to complement the permanent telemetered network of Catania University. Comparison between locations obtained by both networks were made for earthquakes recorded by at least 5 ARGOS DCP (Data Collection Platform) stations. We observed a satisfactory agreement for events inside both networks. By merging data of both networks, it has been possible to locate more than 50 earthquakes for which separate computation was not possible due to the low number of arrivals. On 3rd-4th June a swarm of deep seismic events was observed. Hypocenters of these earthquakes are clearly located in a NNW-SSE-trending vertical zone of 5 km width at a depth of 7–36 km. Changes in the distribution of shallow seismic activity, before and after this swarm, have been observed.

    Notes: The Massif Central, the most significant geomorphological unit of the Hercynian belt in France, is characterized by graben structures which are part of the European Cenozoic Rift System (ECRIS) and also by distinct volcanic episodes, the most recent dated at 20 Ma to 4000 years BP. In order to study the lithosphere-asthenosphere system beneath this volcanic area, we performed a teleseismic field experiment.During a six-month period, a joint French-German team operated a network of 79 mobile short-period seismic stations in addition to the 14 permanent stations. Inversion of P-wave traveltime residuals of teleseismic events recorded by this dense array yielded a detailed image of the 3-D velocity structure beneath the Massif Central down to 180 km depth. The upper 60 km of the lithosphere displays strong lateral heterogeneities and shows a remarkable correlation between the volcanic provinces and the negative velocity perturbations. The 3-D model reveals two channels of low velocities, interpreted as the remaining thermal signature of magma ascent following large lithospheric fractures inherited from Hercynian time and reactivated during Oligocene times. The teleseismic inversion model yields no indication of a low-velocity zone in the mantle associated with the graben structures proper. The observation of smaller velocity perturbations and a change in the shape of the velocity pattern in the 60–100 km depth range indicates a smooth transition from the lithosphere to the asthenosphere, thus giving an idea of the lithosphere thickness. A broad volume of low velocities having a diameter of about 200 km from 100 km depth to the bottom of the model is present beneath the Massif Central. This body is likely to be the source responsible for the volcanism. It could be interpreted as the top of a plume-type structure which is now in its cooling phase.

    Notes: Conflicting models of the core-mantle boundary (CMB) structure have been derived from tomographic inversion of bulletin data: their long wavelength topography ranges from ±3 km to ±7 km according to the model considered. A simple test of these models is provided by the analysis of PKP(AB) phases observed at the antipode of a seismic region. Antipodal waves have the peculiarity that they arrive from a wide range of azimuths so that observations at a single station allow us to sample a large volume in the Earth. In particular, PKP(AB) samples CMB structure along two circles at 48° distance from the station and from the epicentral region.We have collected short period and Geoscope seismograms from Fiji-Tonga earthquakes recorded at the antipodal station Tamanrasset, Algeria. The differential traveltime residuals of PKP(AB)-PKIKP are analysed as a function of back-azimuth. Their mean value does not vary by more than ±0.4 s, whereas CMB models, including topography and in some cases heterogeneities above CMB, predict azimuthal variations of up to ±0.9 s. Consequently our data favour a small topography of the core-mantle boundary or a compensating effect in traveltimes between CMB topography and heterogeneities in the lowermost mantle.
