    Notes: The morphologies of solvent-free, microporous, mechanically self-supporting cylinders of linear polyethylene and isotactic polypropylene, crystallized from solution in supercritical propane, were examined by an SEM technique. The morphology of gels (or foams), obtained with little or no shrinkage from 2% to 35% solutions by weight of polyethylene (99% to 85% porosities), is shown in some detail. Lamellae with very little or considerable mutual organization occur, often in the form of stacks with straight or coiled axes (axialites). Further growth of these can lead to particles with a roughly spherical overall shape and a predominantly radial orientation of the lamellae at the particle surface. Subcooled isotactic polypropylene, on the other hand, crystallizes in the form of perfectly shaped birefringent microspheres of very uniform size. ©1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Crystallization of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) from homogeneous solution in supercritical propane yields open-cell foams of high surface area (120-150 m2/g). Their morphology usually consists of microspheres with a dense core and a porous periphery of radiating fibrils. Pore radii covering the mesopore range (2-50 nm), making their largest contribution at 10-20 nm, were calculated from nitrogen adsorption isotherms. Surface areas of the correct order of magnitude are obtained by assuming that gas adsorption takes place on the surfaces of lamellar crystals. Crystallization of iPP from n-butane and n-heptane generates foams of lower mesoporosity and smaller surface area. These more “liquid-like” solvents do not allow the formation of an open network of mesopores or they promote its collapse upon their removal. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. In connection with the thermal decomposition of NH4I the decomposition-pressure-function is given and the enthalpy of formation and the standard entropy of the phases are derived.

    Description / Table of Contents: Thermal Behaviour and Crystal Structure of YAl3Cl12We determined the thermodynamic data of YAl3Cl12 ΔHYOAl3Cl12,298 = -739.9 ± 3 kcal/mol and SYOAl3Cl12,298 = 136.1 ± 4 cal/K · mol by total pressure measurements and ΔHYOAl3Cl12,298 = -739.1 ± 1.6 kcal/mol by solution calorimetry. Using DTA-investigations we established the phase diagram in the system AlCl3-YCl3. The crystal structure was refined on the basis of single crystal data (P31 12; Z = 3; a = 1 046.8(2); c = 1 562.3(3) pm).
    Notes: Mit phasenreinem YAl3Cl12 werden Zersetzungsdruckmessungen im Membrannullmanometer und lösungskalorimetrische Messungen zur Bestimmung der thermodynamischen Daten der Verbindung durchgeführt, wobei wir aus den Druckmessungen ΔHYOAl3Cl12,298 = -739,9 ± 3 kcal/mol und SYOAl3Cl12,298 = 136,1 ± 4 cal/K · mol ermitteln und lösungskalorimetrisch ΔHYOAl3Cl12,298 = -739,1 ± 1,6 kcal/mol herleiten. DTA-Untersuchungen dienten der Aufstellung eines Phasendiagrammes im System YCl3—AlCl3.Anhand der Einkristalldaten wurde die Struktur verfeinert (P3112; Z = 3; a = 1 046,8(2); c = 1 562,3(3) pm).

    Notes: The maturation of connective tissue involves the organization of collagen fibres by resident fibroblasts. Fibroblast attachment to collagen has been demonstrated to involve cell surface receptors, integrins of the β1 family. Integrins are associated with cytoplasmic actin of microfilaments either directly or through focal adhesions. The major actin isoform of fibroblast microfilaments is β actin and to a lesser extent α smooth muscle (α SM) actin. Cultured human dermal fibroblasts derived from adult dermis, newborn foreskin or keloid scar were grown on either uncoated or collagen-coated surfaces. The expression and synthesis of both α2β1 integrin and α SM actin were followed by immunohistology and immunoprecipitation. Fibroblasts on uncoated surfaces expressed little α2β1 integrin on their surface, while 20 per cent of them demonstrated α SM actin within microfilaments. Fibroblasts grown on a collagen-coated surface minimally expressed α SM actin in microfilament structures and a majority of the cells were positive for α2β1 integrin on their membranes. Using [35S]-methionine incorporation and immunoprecipitation, it was shown that fibroblasts grown in uncoated dishes synthesized more α SM actin than fibroblasts grown on collagen-coated dishes. In contrast, fibroblasts grown on collagen coated dishes synthesized more α2β1 integrin compared to the same cells grown on uncoated dishes. Fibroblasts maintained on a type I collagen upregulate the expression and synthesis of α2β1 integrin, and downregulate the expression and synthesis of α SM actin. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: Avidin, a positively charged egg-white protein, aggregates extensively when mixed at ambient temperatures with anionic detergents, such as sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The resultant aggregates fail to penetrate the stacking gel during polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE). To prevent the formation of such aggregates, avidin was acetylated and the pI was thus reduced. Acetylated avidin was found to behave in a manner similar to that of streptavidin; under nondenaturing conditions (i.e., incubation of samples at room temperature), both proteins normally migrated mainly as tetramers with a tendency to form oligomers of the tetramer. When samples were boiled, both proteins migrated mainly as the monomer. The comparative stability properties of avidin and streptavidin were also examined using SDS-PAGE by heating samples and determining the extent of dissociation of tetramers to monomers as a function of temperature. A distinctive transition temperature could be defined for individual samples. Using this assay, it was determined that, in the absence of biotin, the quaternary structure of streptavidin is more stable than that of avidin. Biotin appears to stabilize structures of both avidin and streptavidin to a similar degree. Acetylation of avidin thus provides a simple means to analyze the quaternary structure of the molecule using SDS-PAGE.
