    Notes: Abstract An essentially new method to relate a number of taxa on the basis of a predefined set of dichotomous properties (i.e. either present or not present) is described. The basic step of the analysis is the derivation of a sophisticated distance measure to describe the pairwise dissimilarities quantitatively on the basis of the individual properties. The presentation of the dissimilarity matrix by a tree-like structure is an obvious step implicated by the the distance measure and is related to the widely used method of successive joining of nearest neighbors with respect to the distances. The distance measure makes no use of stochastic or other mathematical models of evolutionary processes and can be interpreted best in terms of discrete information theory.

    Notes: Abstract.  Carpet sea anemones of the genus Palythoa are common inhabitants of reef crest environments in the Florida Keys reef tract. Through a unique assimilation mechanism, Palythoa spp. entomb carbonate sediment within their tissues. The amount of sediment assimilated is significant, averaging almost 45% of wet tissue weight. Palythoa spp. assimilate all available minerals on the reef. Aragonite, magnesium calcite, calcite and minor quantities of siliciclastic components are all assimilated in proportions comparable to their content in adjacent sediment sinks. There is also no preference in terms of skeletal composition; coral grit, coralline red algae, Halimeda and other allochems are all equally assimilated into Palythoa spp. tissue. The only preference is particle size. Sediment extracted from tissue samples is generally ?125 μm in size, far finer than ambient sediment found adjacent to Palythoa spp. colonies (predominantly 〉500 μm). Much of the finest sediment extracted from Palythoa spp. tissue is composed of elongated crystal aggregates of aragonite. These particles appear to have been produced in situ through biologically influenced mineralization. Aggregates nucleated on exogenous sediment and attained their elongated form as assimilation proceeded. When Palythoa spp. colonies die, the assimilated sediment and the crystal aggregates are released back into the reef environment. The eventual fate of this material has yet to be determined.

    Notes: Abstract Force measurements between SiO2 surfaces with and without adsorbed phenyl groups in aqueous media using the atomic force microscope (AFM) are compared. An oxidized silicon tip and an oxidized silicon wafer were hydrophobized with phenyl groups, and the long-range attraction induced by hydrophobation is shown in force vs. distance curves. The observed differences prove that the silanol groups of the unmodified SiO2 surface are replaced by the phenyl groups.

    Notes: Abstract Silicon carbide is produced from chlorine containing polysilanes. An introduction of oxygen is avoided by strict handling under argon. The thermal behavior of such a material is investigated in this paper. The crystallisation process is characterised by x-ray diffraction and small angle x-ray scattering. NMR and density investigations complete the x-ray results. A stable nanocrystalline structure of the material is found up to 1400 °C. Higher temperatures create a cleavage of nitrogen and carbon monoxide and crystallite growth starts.

    Notes: Abstract  A non-biased estimator of power spectral density (PSD) is introduced for data obtained from a zeroth order interpolated laser Doppler anemometer (LDA) data set. The systematic error, sometimes referred to as the “particle-rate filter” effect, is removed using an FIR filter parameterized using the mean particle rate. Independent from this, a procedure for estimating the measurement system noise is introduced and applied to the estimated spectra. The spectral estimation is performed in the domain of the autocorrelation function and assumes no further process parameters. The new technique is illustrated using simulated and measured data, in the latter case with direct comparison to simultaneously acquired hot-wire data.

    Notes: Abstract Nanocrystalline zirconia powders prepared by laser evaporation were analyzed by electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. A very high volume fraction of tetragonal particles was found, although the majority of particles is significantly larger than the equilibrium size of the tetragonal → monoclinic transformation. Nanopowder of yttria stabilized (2.4 mol% Y2O3) zirconia was used to prepare nanocrystalline ceramics by pressureless sintering at T = 1400 °C. At T ≥ 1200 °C the samples show superplastic behavior with an activation energy of 585 kJ mol–1 and a stress exponent of about 1.8.

    Notes: Abstract We report the generation of transgenic barley plants via PEG-mediated direct DNA uptake to protoplasts. Protoplasts isolated from embryogenic cell suspensions of barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv ‘Igri’) were PEG-treated in a solution containing a plasmid which contained the neomycin phosphotransferase (NPT II) gene under the control of the rice actin promoter and the nos terminator. Colonies developing from the treated protoplasts were incubated in liquid medium containing the selective antibiotic G418. Surviving calli were subsequently transferred to solid media containing G418, on which embryogenic calli developed. These calli gave rise to albino and green shoots on antibiotic-free regeneration medium. NPT II ELISA revealed that approximately half of the morphogenic calli expressed the foreign gene. In total, 12 plantlets derived from NPT-positive calli survived transfer to soil. Southern hybridization analysis confirmed the stable transformation of these plants. However, the foreign gene seemed to be inactivated in plants from one transgenic line. Most of the transgenic plants set seed, and the foreign gene was transmitted and expressed in their progenies, which was ascertained by Southern hybridization and NPT II ELISA.

    Notes: Abstract. The evolutionary relationships of ribosomal proteins from eubacteria, archaea, eukaryotes, chloroplasts and mitochondria were examined by their degree of conservation, their structural and functional properties and by the occurrence of conserved structural elements. The structural domains formed by the different protein families were studied. The occurrence of monophyletic groups was investigated for each protein family within the archaea. Phylogenetic trees were constructed between these organisms and together with the homologous sequences of the other phylogenetic domains. All organisms belonging to the archaea clearly formed a monophyletic group. The conserved sequence motifs were checked for the potential to form similar secondary structural elements.

    Notes: Abstract A method to determine Joule–Thomson inversion curves, using isobaric-isothermal Monte Carlo molecular simulations, is presented. The usual experimental practice to obtain the locus of points in which the isenthalpic derivative of temperature with respect to pressure vanishes is to process volumetric data by means of thermodynamic relations. This experimental procedure requires the very precise measurement of volumetric properties at conditions up to five times the fluid's critical temperature and twelve times its critical pressure. These harsh experimental conditions have hindered the publication of data for even simple fluids and mixtures. By using molecular simulation, these problems may be circumvented, since the computational effort is roughly independent of the actual value of the pressure or the temperature. In general, Joule–Thomson inversion curves obtained by molecular simulation may be used either as an unambiguous test for equations of state in the supercritical and high-pressure regions or for the prediction of real fluid behavior, should the potential be well known. Both applications are exemplified for a Lennard-Jones fluid for which the complete inversion curve is obtained.
