Notes: Abstract In order to predict the effect of small-scale interfacial debonding on the energy release rate at a crack tip for mode I fracture of a fibre with a cracked coating layer, an approximate calculation method has been presented. The relation of debonding length, thickness of the coating layer and ratio of elastic modulus of the coating layer to that of the fibre, to the energy release rate of the fibre was calculated for some examples. It was demonstrated that small-scale debonding reduces the energy release rate and, therefore, effectively prevents reduction in fibre strength.

Notes: Abstract The rumen contents of sika deer (Cervus nippon Temminck) on the Boso Peninsula, central Japan, were analyzed to identify local, sexual and age-specific differences in food habits. Graminoids and woody plants were the primary foods throughout the year. In winter, the use of evergreen broad leaves increased. The food habits of sika deer on Boso Peninsula were intermediate between those of populations inhabiting northern and southern Japan. Acorns, mainlyLithocarpus edulis Nakai, were consumed in fall and winter with a peak in October. Since the availability of acorns is not influenced by foraging in previous years, it can be regarded as a stable food supply and hence may be important for deer on the Boso Peninsula. The local difference between the Amatsukominato (AT) area, having a large plantation ofLithocarpus producing acrons, and the Kamogawa-Katsuura (KK) area, having a small plantation ofLithocarpus, was recognized; seeds and fruit were consumed more in AT than in KK in fall and winter. Males consumed more seeds and fruit than females at both sites in fall. This can be attributed to sexual differences in nutritional requirement.

Notes: Fecal and rumen nitrogen content of Sika deer (Cervus nippon Temminck 1838) on the Boso Peninsula, central Japan, were analyzed concerning their seasonal fluctuations and local differences at four areas on the Boso Peninsula. The mean fecal nitrogen was high in August and low in February in all the areas. The seasonal variation, however, was relatively small. This may be the result of the following reasons: the Boso deer feed on evergreen broad-leaves containing a high and stable nitrogen content in winter; little snow falls there; and the deer consume foods relatively low in nitrogen in summer. The fecal and rumen nitrogen content in both summer and winter depended on deer density.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents an autonomous wheelchair system with the capability of self-localization and obstacle avoidance. In our system, the ceiling lights are chosen as landmarks to realize the self-localization of the wheelchair, and a laser range-finder is used for obstacle avoidance. First the approaches of landmark recognition and selflocalization for the wheelchair are proposed. Then the principle of obstacle avoidance using a laser range-finder is described. Finally, the total system of the wheelchair is introduced and a navigational experiment is described. Experimental results indicate the effectiveness of our system.

Notes: Abstract To assess the role in cell-cell adhesion of gp64, a putative cell-cell adhesion molecule ofPolysphondylium pallidum, we treated the cells with tunicamycin (TM), a known inhibitor of the synthesis of the N-linked oligosaccharide precursor, and examined TM's effect on cell-cell adhesion. The vegetative growth ofPolysphondylium cells was inhibited with TM in a dose-dependent manner. When cells were treated with TM (2.0 μg/ml) during only the first 4 hr of starvation and further starved for 8 hr without TM, the cells dissociated considerably, although even the growth phase cells ofPolysphondylium normally show EDTA-resistant (Ca2+-independent) cell adhesions. In parallel with the above effects, the amounts of intact gp64 decreased considerably in time with the lengths of incubation (0 hr〉4 hr 〉8 hr). When TM-treated cells were washed free of TM, and shaken for a further 12 hr, the cells began to aggregate again, accompanied by an increase of gp64. In conclusion, TM affected cell-cell adhesion ofPolysphondylium cells, but we were not able to distinguish whether the inhibition of cell aggregation was due to defects in glycosylation on glycoproteins and/or due to reduced levels of glycoproteins themselves.

Notes: Abstract. Maskless laser patterning of indium tin oxide (ITO) thin films was studied by the use of a diode-pumped Q-switched Nd:YLF laser. The ITO films were sputter-deposited either on lime glass, the standard substrate material for flat panel display applications, or fused quartz so that the efficiency of laser patterning as a function of substrate absorption could be studied. The laser wavelength was varied among infrared (λ=1047 nm), visible (λ=523 nm), and ultraviolet (λ=349 nm and λ=262 nm). It is observed that strong light absorption by the substrate is a crucial requirement for a residue-free patterning of the ITO film. Observations and numerical calculations of the laser-induced surface temperature indicate that material removal occurs via thermal vaporization and that other mechanisms such as photochemical decomposition or spallation can be neglected.

Notes: Abstract Objective. To clarify the relationship between blood pressure andpulse wave transit time at the peripheral artery from the R wave of theelectrocardiogram (m-PWTT), the effects of cardiovascular interventions onthis relationship was evaluated. Methods.Ten mongrel dogs wereanesthetized by isoflurane inhalation, and catheter tip pressure transducerswere inserted into the ascending aorta and at the bifurcation of abdominalaorta to measure central and peripheral pulse wave arrival. Pulse wave arrivalat the ascending aorta from the R wave represents pre-ejection period (PEP)and pulse wave arrival between the ascending aorta and bifurcation of aortarepresents pulse wave transit time (PWTT), thus m-PWTT = PEP + PWTT.Hypertension was induced by the continuous infusion of dobutamine andphenylephrine, and hypotension was induced by deepening isoflurane anesthesia, acute blood loss and nitroglycerine infusion. The relationship between timingcomponents (PWTT, PEP, and m-PWTT) and blood pressure was recorded andanalyzed by using the least squares method. Results. The relationshipbetween timing components (PWTT, PEP and, m-PWTT) and blood pressure wassignificant and highly correlated. When the change in blood pressure was dueto the myocardial contractility, such as after dobutamine infusion, therelationship between all timing components and blood pressure was consistentand negative. However, when the change in blood pressure was due to thevasoactive agents, such as phenylephrine, the relationship between timingcomponents and blood pressure was dependent on the reflex change in PEP.Conclusions.Change in m-PWTT is a good parameter to predict bloodpressure changes, although the absolute blood pressure value cannot beobtained.

Notes: Abstract A DSC method for evaluating the surface area of etched Al foils for use in high performance electrolytic capacitors is presented. A linear relationship between the etching degree (effective surface area) and the thermal resistance of the sample is obtained by means of DSC, based on the transient phenomenon. This method using the transient state in DSC measurement is not only novel, but also rapid and simple in evaluating the surface area of an etched aluminum foil. The method is effective even when the Al foil has a naturally oxidized surface.

Notes: Abstract A useful method to calculate stress disturbances arising from cut fibres is the so-called shear lag analysis, in which it is assumed that fibres act to carry tensile stress without transferring applied stress to the matrix, and the matrix acts to transfer stress to the fibres without carrying tensile stress. This assumption gives a limit for application. In the present work, with unidirectional metal matrix composites in mind, the usual two-dimensional shear lag analysis was modified to express the situation where both fibres and matrix act to carry applied stress and also to transfer stress. By using this modified method, tensile strain concentration in the fibres and matrix adjacent to cut fibres and matrix, and shear stresses at the interface between fibres and matrix, were calculated for some examples.
