    Description: The causes of amphibian deformities and their role in widespread amphibian declines remain conjectural. Severe limb abnormalities were induced at high frequencies in Pacific treefrogs (Hyla regilla) exposed to cercariae of a trematode parasite (Ribeiroia sp.). The abnormalities closely matched those observed at field sites, and an increase in parasite density caused an increase in abnormality frequency and a decline in tadpole survivorship.     Description: The Near Infrared Mapping Spectrometer performed spectral studies of Jupiter and the Galilean satellites during the June 1996 perijove pass of the Galileo spacecraft. Spectra for a 5-micrometer hot spot on Jupiter are consistent with the absence of a significant water cloud above 8 bars and with a depletion of water compared to that predicted for solar composition, corroborating results from the Galileo probe. Great Red Spot (GRS) spectral images show that parts of this feature extend upward to 240 millibars, although considerable altitude-dependent structure is found within it. A ring of dense clouds surrounds the GRS and is lower than it by 3 to 7 kilometers. Spectra of Callisto and Ganymede reveal a feature at 4. 25 micrometers, attributed to the presence of hydrated minerals or possibly carbon dioxide on their surfaces. Spectra of Europa's high latitudes imply that fine-grained water frost overlies larger grains.     Notes: Studies were conducted to assess the importance of soil-borne pathogens as impediments to the production of direct-drilled wheat following Kentucky bluegrass in rotation. Bluegrass sods were collected as cores from commercial seed fields in October (after open-field burning) and in December and March (after exposure to normal freezing and thawing), treated with glyphosate after a 2- to 3-week period of green-up in the glasshouse, and then planted to wheat 21 days later. Wheat seedlings in the 3- to 4-leaf stage were stunted and spindly in either burned or nonburned sods collected in October, but grew significantly better in burned than nonburned sods collected in December and March. Fumigation (methyl bromide), simulated tillage, and application of metalaxyl as a drench, singly or as combined treatments, improved the growth of wheat in nonburned sods. Growth of wheat in nontreated burned sods collected after frost had penetrated the upper portions was equivalent to that in fumigated sods. Experimental freezing at −20°C for up to 96 h, of burned and nonburned sods collected in October, followed by thawing also improved the growth of wheat subsequently sown directly into these sods. The stunted and spindly seedlings had roots girdled and severed by lesions typical of Rhizoctonia root rot. Isolates of Rhizoctonia cerealis were recovered from these roots and caused poor seedling emergence and stunted root and shoot growth of both wheat and bluegrass. The results suggest that both R. cerealis and Pythium spp. are potentially important soil-borne pathogens of wheat when following Kentucky bluegrass in rotation and that burning done routinely to improve the yield of bluegrass seed can also reduce the potential for damage caused by Rhizoctonia and Pythium root rots of wheat seeded directly into bluegrass sod.

    Notes: Abstract. Risedronate is a potent pyridinyl bisphosphonate being developed for bone diseases such as Paget's disease and osteoporosis. In this study, we compared the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of three different doses of oral risedronate in 62 patients with severe Paget's disease of bone [serum alkaline phosphatase (AP) 〉3 times the upper limit of normal]. Patients were treated at six study centers with either 10, 20, or 30 mg oral risedronate daily for 28 days and followed up to day 85. The primary efficacy parameter was percentage change from baseline in AP excess. The data show that there is a dose-response with risedronate: patients who received 30 mg oral risedronate for 28 days benefited most, with a mean percentage decrease in AP excess of 72.2% (20 mg: 57.9%; 10 mg: 48.0%). Time to response—the first time point when there was a ≥30% reduction from baseline in AP excess and ≥50% reduction from baseline in urinary hydroxyproline (HP)/creatinine–was also significantly shorter (median 29 days) in the 30 mg group compared with the other two groups (20 mg: 43 days and 10 mg: 71 days). Long-term follow-up data up to 33 months from the start of the study indicated that AP remained below baseline levels for all patients. Histologic evaluation of bone formed during risedronate therapy demonstrated that normal lamellar bone was formed as opposed to woven pagetic bone, with no evidence of osteomalacia. Risedronate was well tolerated. Transient decreases in serum calcium and increases in serum intact parathyroid hormone were observed, consistent with the pharmacology of risedronate. In conclusion, risedronate administered at daily doses of 10, 20, and 30 mg for 28 days was effective in reducing the biochemical indices of disease activity in patients with severe Paget's disease of bone. A daily dose of 30 mg was most effective without compromising safety or tolerability.
