Notes: Abstract The two Protocerebral-Medulla 4 neurons (PM4a and b) in the locust brain have adjacent cell bodies in the medial deutocerebrum. They project through the posterior protocerebrum, forming limited arborisations en route, and enter the lobula and medulla of the ipsilateral optic lobe, where they form extensive, overlapping arborisations. The PM4a and b neurons are octopamine immunoreactive. Their octopamine content (approximately 25 pg per cell) is confirmed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry; each cell contains approximately 25 pg p-octopamine. Simultaneous intracellular recording from exposed PM4a and b cell bodies reveals that the two cells are physiologically indistinguishable. They receive multimodal sensory inputs. Tactile/mechanosensory stimuli to much of the animal's body and head, acoustic stimuli, and simple visual stimuli all give rise to e.p.s.p.s and action potentials in the PM4 cell body. Simultaneous recording from the cell body in the deutocerebrum and the axon in the lobula demonstrates that action potentials are predominantly initiated in the deutocerebrum and propagate centrifugally, towards the optic lobe. Occasionally, bright light flashes will initiate an action potential in the axon in the optic stalk, which probably propagates bidirectionally: centripetally to the cell body, and centrifugally into the optic lobe. The extensive arborisations in the lobula and medulla are therefore likely to be sites of octopamine release. Because PM4 neurons are octopaminergic, project to the optic lobe, and receive modalities of sensory input known to dishabituate the Descending Contralateral Movement Detector (DCMD) visual interneuron, it is proposed that PM4 neurons are neuromodulatory — mediating dishabituation or arousal of the visual system.

Notes: Abstract The high-affinity sulfonylurea receptor (SUR1) gene regulates insulin secretion and may play a role in type 2 diabetes. A silent variant in exon 31 of SUR1 (AGG→AGA) was detected by single-strand conformational polymorphism and genotypes were determined for 396 Mexican American subjects (289 non-diabetic). The normal and mutant alleles were designated G and A, respectively. Among non-diabetics, those with the AA genotype had higher fasting insulin values than those with the AG and GG genotypes (113.4 pmol/l for AA vs 82.8 pmol/l for AG/GG, P=0.043). Similar results were observed for 2-h insulin (849.6 pmοl/l for AA vs 498.6 pmol/l for AG/GG, P=0.0003) and for the proinsulin to specific insulin ratio (0.068 for AA vs 0.056 for AG/GG, P=0.030). Specific insulin levels also differed significantly across the three genotypic classes (P=0.021). No differences in fasting glucose, body mass index, or waist circumference according to genotype were noted. Two-hour glucose was modestly higher in individuals with the AA genotype. Since we have previously reported linkage between SUR1 and hyperglycemia, the present association between a SUR1 variant and hyperinsulinemia in normal individuals from a high diabetes risk ethnic group raises the possibility of primary insulin hypersecretion as an antecedent of type 2 diabetes in at least some individuals from this population.

Notes: Abstract. The formation and the deexcitation of the composite nucleus formed during the Ni + Al reaction at 28 A·MeV has been studied with the 4 π multidetector AMPHORA. A rigourous selection of the experimental data is described in order to extract a central collision sample. Then different models are compared to the data. The incomplete fusion process is in agreement with the data. The azimuthal angle correlations of He-Li and Li-Li pairs have been used to discriminate sequential or instantaneous emission. The sequential deexcitation is more consistent with all the data. The different analyses allow to describe all the characteristics of the compound nucleus and finally a fusion cross section of 300 ± 100 mbarn has been measured.

Notes: Abstract An analytical expression for the reflectivity between the active cavity of a circular symmetric pillar vertical cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) and Bragg mirror, which takes account of diffraction at the interface, is derived. The method (mode-matching in Hankel space) is also used to determine the reflectivity with some of the Bragg layers embedded in the cavity region. The dependence of reflectivity upon various parameters, including number of Bragg pairs, cavity radius and mode number, is discussed. The validity of using the plane wave reflectivity value (which ignores diffraction effects) is seen to depend significantly upon these parameters. As an indicator of the importance of taking these effects into account for pillar diameters of ∼6 μm and less, the variation of threshold gain with cavity radius is given for a commonly used type of VCSEL structure.

Notes: Summary A general continuum approach to the dynamical behavior of elastic composites proposed in an earlier paper is specialized to infinitesimal deformations of elastic laminates. A simple procedure is proposed to evaluate the constitutive parameters appropriate to a particular choice of constituents, which is easily generalized to other types of material behavior and composite structure. The resulting theory is then used to investigate the propagation of plane harmonic waves to furnish a basis for comparison with other dynamical treatments of elastic laminates.

Notes: Summary A continuum theory for composite materials is presented in which the composite constituents are modeled by superimposed continua which undergo thermal and mechanical interactions. Kinematical notions, field equations and a constitutive theory are developed, including consequences of material frame indifference and material symmetry which restrict the form of the response functions. The final result is a set of linearized equations for thermal and mechanical processes in laminated or fiber reinforced composite elastic materials.
