Description: Mode conversions and reflections at upper-mantle seismic discontinuities may be contained in earthquake seismograms as weak secondary phases that often become visible only after special signal processing techniques are applied to the data. To extract fully the information these secondary phases carry about the three-dimensional structure of the Earth, new observational and interpretational methods have to be developed. However, new sources of possible systematic errors may lead to conflicting results. Studies carried out by various research groups on the thickness of the upper-mantle transition zone, the sharpness of upper-mantle discontinuities and the global existence of a 520 km discontinuity are examples where such discrepancies did arise. Although there is a general consensus that the depths to the 410 km and 660 km discontinuities vary by a few tens of kilometres at most, the question of wither the depth variations of the 410 km and 660 km discontinuities are correlated or anticorrelated is still unresolved. Similarly, different data sets and methods yielded different answers on the sharpness of the upper-mantle discontinuities at 410 km and 660 km depth. Finally, data apparently supporting the global existence of a seismic discontinuity at 520 km depth can be equally well explained by models that do not contain this discontinuity.

Notes: Abstract A method is presented in which the 15N at.% of urea is determined with high precision on liquid samples containing as little as 10 nmol of urea. The method involves removal of interference from NH4 + initially present in the sample by cation exchange. Urea in the sample is subsequently hydrolyzed to NH4 + by the enzyme urease. Liberated NH4 + is separated from the alkaline sample by diffusion as NH3 through a helium gas phase where it is finally oxidized to N2 by reaction with hypobromite iodine. The isotopically labeled N2 thus formed is mixed with the N2 initially present in the sample, and the 15N at.% of urea is calculated from the relative amounts of 14N15N and 15N15N by means of the isotope pairing principle. The presented method for 15N-urea analysis proved to be precise (SE 〈 0.4 at.%, n = 5), when applied on both marine and freshwater samples with an 15N enrichment 〉1 at.%, and interference was found only from volatile methyl amines.

Notes: In a recent paper, Gurrola, Minster & Owens (1994; hereafter referred to as GMO) introduced a technique for the analysis of seismic data and applied it to the records of station OBN in Russia. GMO claimed that this was a new technique in earthquake seismology, and that their results for OBN provided a new insight into the deep structure of the Russian platform. We have some comments on their techniques and results.

Notes: The investigated material comprises rocks of the Palaeozoic ophiolitic assemblage exposed around the Sowie Góry Mountains Massif in the Sudetes in the form of the three units: ślza, Zαbkowice and Nowa Ruda. The radiometric age (U-Pb) of the rocks, stated as 420 ± 20 Ma, places them in the Silurian. A palaeomagnetic study reveals the presence of four groups of palaeomagnetic poles. One of these is derived from an isolated component representing Permian overprinting. The second remanence component fits with the Silurian results from Baltica and may therefore be regarded as being of Silurian age. According to this interpretation, the ophiolitic complex would not have been involved in tectonic action after Silurian times. On the other hand, this component does not agree with the results of the neighbouring Bohemian Massif but is consistent with Late Carboniferous data of the European Variscans. In this case the other two components should be interpreted as Early- to Mid-Carboniferous overprints. This interpretation implies important strike-slip movements. In order to exclude one of these hypotheses, more data are still needed.

Notes: Several years of broad-band teleseismic data from the GRSN stations have been analysed for crustal structure using P-to-S converted waves at the crustal discontinuities. An inversion technique was developed which applies the Thomson-Haskell formalism for plane waves without slowness integration. The main phases observed are Moho conversions, their multiples in the crust, and conversions at the base of the sediments. The crustal thickness derived from these data is in good agreement with results from other studies. For the Gräfenberg stations, we have made a more detailed comparison of our model with a previously published model obtained from refraction seismic experiments. The refraction seismic model contains boundaries with strong velocity contrasts and a significant low-velocity zone, resulting in teleseismic waveforms that are too complicated as compared to the observed simple waveforms. The comparison suggests that a significant low-velocity zone is not required and that internal crustal boundaries are rather smooth.

Notes: Summary A report is made on a method for so-called “indirect” determination of the erythrocytic Glutamatic-Pyruvic-Transaminase (GPT) enzyme patterns in starch gel. In Schleswig-Holstein in random tests of 1444 unrelated persons the following distribution of gene frequency was found for GPT:GPT 1:0.508; GPT 2:0.4882; GPT 3:0.0035. The evaluation of 499 mother-child pairs showed no deviation from the heredity hypothesis.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wird über die Häufigkeitsverteilung des Isoenzyms Adenosin-Desaminase (ADA) in Schleswig-Holstein unter Berücksichtigung geographischer Räume berichtet.
Notes: Summary There have been reports on the frequency of appearance of the isoenzyme adenosine deaminase in different parts of Schleswig-Holstein (Northern Germany). A significant difference in the distribution of the gene was found between the West and the East of Schleswig-Holstein. Examination of 516 mother-child pairs revealed no deviations from the hereditary hypothesis.

Notes: Abstract Excitation to the 1s 2 2s 2 2p 5 3p configuration in Mg III has been studied with optical spectrometry in the Mg+-He collision from 15 to 75 keV. The results are discussed and compared with the theory of Barat and Lichten, which predicts no such excitation. A possible explanation by Coulomb excitation is given.
