    Notes: A model which describes the steady-state mechanical stresses resulting from electromigration in microelectronic interconnect lines is presented. This model is valid when sidewall and grain boundary interface diffusion are the dominant transport paths, and accounts for the two-dimensional microstructure present in such lines. By applying the model to simulated line microstructures, we find that bamboo grain boundaries may substantially increase the maximum electromigration stress. Furthermore, microstructural simulations on bounded interconnect segments show that variations in grain size may lead to a large scatter in the maximum stress, particularly as line length decreases. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In this article, a model of electromigration and stress-induced void formation in microelectronic interconnects is presented. This model solves the equations governing atomic diffusion and stress evolution in two dimensions, and can therefore account for the complex grain structures present in typical metal lines. A combined analytical and numerical solution scheme is developed to calculate the atomic fluxes and the evolution of mechanical stress, while avoiding the difficulties associated with finite element based approaches. Once a void has formed, growth is modeled by calculating the flux of atoms away from the void site. By combining models of atomic diffusion, stress evolution, void nucleation, and void growth, the complete void formation process can be simulated. To demonstrate this approach, void growth is calculated in interconnects where electromigration and thermal stress-induced damage have been experimentally observed. The results confirm that the model can quantitatively simulate void formation in realistic grain structures. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: An enhanced analytical model is derived to calculate the junction depth and Hg interstitial profile during n-on-p junction formation in vacancy-doped HgCdTe. The enhanced model expands on a simpler model by accounting for the Hg interstitials in the p-type, vacancy-rich region. The model calculates junction depth during both the initial, reaction-limited regime of junction formation and the diffusion-limited regime. It also calculates junction depth under conditions when the abrupt junction approximation of the simpler model fails. The enhanced model can be used to determine the limits of the annealing conditions and times for which the junction depth calculated analytically is valid. The decay length of interstitials into the p-type region estimated analytically places an upper bound on the grid spacing needed to accurately resolve the junction in a numerical simulation. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract  This study concerns the detection of natural steroid hormones in hair of cattle. Estradiol (E2) and testosterone (T) were chosen as representatives of estrogens and androgens. In particular, the influence of age, sex and hair pigmentation on the steroid concentrations was investigated. Samples were obtained from numerous steers, cows, bulls, and female and male calves. The extraction procedure for E2 and T from hair comprised liquid-liquid and solid-phase extraction and was followed by an essential high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) step for further purification of the extracts. Final quantification was performed with specific enzyme immunoassays (EIA). Lower E2-concentrations were detected in the hair of some steers, cows, and bulls (approximately 1 ng/g), in several of these hair samples the concentrations of E2 were below the limit of detection. Testosterone was measured in the hair of steers (approximately 3 ng/g), cows (approximately 6 ng/g), and bulls (in average 15 ng/g). There was a significant difference in the testosterone concentrations of white (approximately 8 ng/g) and of black hair (approximately 33 ng/g) of bulls. In hair from all male and female calves, E2 and T were measured. The concentrations amounted approximately to 9 ng E2/g and 3 ng T/g for female calves and to 5 ng E2/g and 7 ng T/g for male calves. There was no significant influence of sex or hair colour on the steroid concentrations in hair of calves. The results suggest that the method is a powerful means to detect natural steroid hormones in hair of animal origin.

    Notes: Abstract. A method was developed for the purification of main intermediates and storage products of leaves and tubers of potato for analysis of their 13C content. The method was tested for recovery of metabolites and carbon isotope discrimination during the purification process. Leaf metabolite δ13C values showed an enrichment of starch relative to sucrose and citrate. This result is in agreement with previous findings in other higher plants and indicates the existence of isotope discrimination steps during transport and metabolism of triose-phosphates in potato leaf mesophyll cells. Active anaplerotic replenishment of the tricarboxylic acid cycle in the leaves of the plants investigated was also deduced from the significant 13C enrichment of malate relative to citrate and asparagine/aspartate relative to glutamine/glutamate. Analysis of tuber metabolite δ13C values showed no difference between starch and sucrose. However, tuber sucrose appeared significantly enriched compared with leaf sucrose and also relative to tuber citrate and malate. This finding suggests the existence of sites of isotopic discrimination during sucrose processing in developing tubers. It also confirms that metabolic cycles of sucrose synthesis and breakdown and of hexose-phosphate/triose-phosphate interconversion, which have been described in excised tuber tissue, also occur in intact organs. The δ13C values were also used to estimate the metabolic rate of carbon oxidation in developing tubers on the assumption that pyruvate dehydrogenase is the main site of isotopic discrimination in the tuber cells. The result obtained was in agreement with the available literature, suggesting that analyses of natural isotopic distribution in plant products may be a useful tool for the study of metabolic processes and sink-source relationships in intact plants.
