    Notes: Abstract Detailed individual nodulation profiles were obtained for five strains of Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar trifolii inoculated onto roots of Trifolium repens seedlings growing on an agar medium of pH 4.5. The time of appearance and the location of every nodule were noted for a period of 10 days after inoculation. Using these nodulation frequency profiles, pairings of strains were identified and six mixed-strain inoculation (1:1 ratio) experiments were subsequently performed at pH 4.5. Results from the mixed-inoculum experiments showed that the performance of a Rhizobium strain in single culture could not be reliably used to predict the outcome of a paired-inoculation study and that some seedlings were exclusively nodulated by rhizobia that performed poorly at low pH in single-culture inoculations.

    Notes: The main molecular techniques which can be used to generate genetic markers, and the applications of these markers to studies of fish populations are outlined. Published and ongoing studies, in the authors' laboratories, on brown trout and Atlantic salmon are used to compare the resolution and applicability of allozyme, mitochondrial DNA and minisatellite (variable number of tandem repeats) markers for studies on population structuring, genetic variation within populations, and the impact of the accidental and deliberate introduction of non-native salmonids on the genetic make-up of natural populations.

    Notes: The wavelength dependence of the transmission probability of a beam of neutrons through super optical quality single-crystal sapphire at room temperature has been measured. The measurements extend over the neutron wavelength range 0.05–1.2 nm. Sharp dips in the transmission caused by Bragg reflection are not found. The data below the dip around 0.2 nm in the cross section have been fitted to a function that accounts for multiphonon scattering. Measurements performed on single crystals with increased lattice distortion (or mosaic spread) show an increase in the cross section at long wavelengths. The attenuation of room-temperature Al2O3 is not significantly different from that for liquid-nitrogen-cooled MgO.

    Notes: Abstract A direct method for solving quasi-static, mixed-mode fracture problems is presented. The element-free Galerkin method is used in order to allow for crack growth without remeshing. An expression for the normalized, critical traction is derived in terms of the fracture resistance (R-curve) and a crack-dependent function. Sample problems demonstrate the capability of this method to accurately compute the post-peak equilibrium paths for structures with growing cracks.

    Notes: Abstract An instrument for neutron capture prompt gamma-ray activation analysis (PGAA) has been constructed as part of the Cold Neutron Research Facility at the 20 MW National Institute of Standards and Technology Research Reactor. The neutron fluence rate (thermal equivalent) is 1.5·108 n ·cm−2·s−1, with negligible fast neutrons and gamma-rays. With compact geometry and hydrogen-free construction, the sensitivity is sevenfold better than an existing thermal instrument. Hydrogen background is thirtyfold lower.

    Notes: Abstract We are developing a multimedia encyclopedia that provides a framework for students to leam nuclear science. A variety of media formats are used to present concepts, including text, static figures, animations, and video. Two special prsentation formats use dynamically produced simulations to expose students to nuclear science relationships. These media types provide greater interactivity and flexibility than simple animations. Students access information through tutorials, a dictionary of nuclear science terms, biographies of notable scientists, and a timeline of nuclear science history. The tutorial organization emphasizes the interrelationships among topics. We present an overview of the encyclopedia.

    Notes: Abstract We are developing electronic laboratories to help introduce students to nuclear science. An electronic laboratory is a collection of computer simulations of nuclear science experiments. Each program allows students to set experimental parameters, collect data, and analyze results. Experiments can easily be repeated because the computer can compress time. Electronic laboratories are useful for schools with existing nuclear science programs because they can prepare students for actual laboratory work. They are also useful for schools without specialized facilities, since they give students an empirical understanding of nuclear science but do not require specialized equipment. We present three electronic experiments.

    Notes: Abstract Association analysis was used to assess relationships among 25 important alien plant species and their association with feral pig rooting in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii, U.S.A. Results of the association analysis were summarized by means of a simplified, rank-based, polar ordination which yielded three subjective species assemblages. One group was characterized by an association with the endpoint species, Ehrharta stipoides. A second group consisted of species associated with the other endpoint species, Andropogon virginicus. The third group comprised a diverse assemblage of 14 species in the middle of the ordination. Comparison of ordination scores with each species's association with pig-induced soil disturbance revealed that members of the Ehrharta group were strongly positively associated with pig activity, whereas members of the Andropogon group were generally negatively associated. The third group showed no association with pig-induced soil disturbance. These results suggest a strong relationship between feral pig activity and the composition of the alien portion of the plant community. Analysis of the ecologies of both plants and pigs suggests that some species may both encourage pig activity and benefit from it. Likewise, other alien plants appear to neither require nor benefit from pig-induced soil disturbance. While pigs appear to play an important role in the organization of these communities, their removal may have a negligible impact on the success of many of the common weeds in the area.
