Notes: A finite-element method which incorporates mesh adaptation is used to calculate ground-water flow and pollutant transport. The formulation is based on the equations for conservation of mass, Darcy's law for an anisotropic medium, and the time-dependent species transport equation. Modifications have been implemented to the finite-element formulation to enhance computational speed and reduce storage; Petrov-Galerkin weighting of the advection terms provides numerical stability. An explicit time marching scheme is used to solve the transient equations. By utilizing unstructured adaptive meshing, species concentration and location of steep fronts are accurately resolved, even though one begins with a coarse mesh. The algorithm currently runs on PC and workstation class computers.

Notes: Summary Several formations within the lower part of the Dalradian Appin Group are characterised by calcareous and calc-silicate lithologies. Amphibole occurs in these metasedimentary units in a variety of habits, from fine-grained disseminated crystals, through radiating aggregates permeating the whole rock, to dark green layers consisting of over 90% amphibole. Electron microprobe analyses of these amphiboles exhibit simple compositional trends from tremolite, through tremolitic hornblende to magnesio-hornblende. The only significant substitutions are from tremolite towards alumino-tschermakite [MgSi ⇌ AlviAliv] and from tremolite towards ferri-tschermakite [MgSi ⇌ FeviAliv]. This is in marked contrast to amphiboles from nearby suites of metavolcanic rocks and intrusive metadolerites which exhibit four coupled substitutions, leading from tremolite towards the ferro-actinolite, edenite, alumino-tschermakite and ferritschermakite end-members. These distinctive compositional trends may aid the distinction between para- and ortho-amphibolites elsewhere. Tremolitic amphibole commonly constitutes a high proportion of the calc-silicate rocks, the only other phases present being quartz ± phlogopite. Carbonate minerals are notably absent. This suggests that the sedimentary protolith was high in Mg, such as a dolomitic marl, possibly containing some magnesite. Sedimentological considerations suggest deposition in tropical latitudes in restricted coastal lagoons forming part of an extensive stable shelf bordering a mature landscape.

Notes: Abstract  The total ozone column is well correlated with tropospheric fields such as the heights of the upper tropospheric geopotential surfaces and thus it can provide useful information on temporal variability in the troposphere. The global availability of long period satellite measurements of the total ozone column, taken by the TOMS instruments since 1978, provides a valuable and independent data set for use in studies of seasonal and interannual climate variability. In this study, the global low-frequency seasonal teleconnections in the observed TOMS data from 1979–91 have been investigated using seasonal teleconnectivity maps and empirical orthogonal function analysis. They have also been compared with the results from a simulation made with the atmospheric GCM at Météo-France, having prescribed observed sea surface temperatures for the same period. In the observed total ozone, strong ENSO-related wave number one longitudinal dipole patterns are seen in both the tropics and in the Southern Hemisphere extratropics. The model shows much weaker variability in total ozone yet appears to be able to capture similar teleconnection patterns in the tropics related to ENSO. In the SH extratropics, the model total ozone shows a strong wave number 3 response rather than the wave number one dipole seen in the observations. A wave number 3 response is also evident in the 200 hPa geopotential height simulated by the model and in the NCEP analysis, and is consistent with the response in a linearised barotropic model forced in the Indonesian region. The different responses in the modelled and observed total ozone, suggest that tropopause effect is not the major factor in the SH extratropics, and it is likely that horizontal ozone transport also plays a role in this region. Despite a generally poor simulation of the zonal mean total ozone, the model was able to capture the anomalous strengthening of the SH stationary waves during austral spring of 1988, related to an intense stratosphere sudden warming.

Notes: Abstract The influence of supersolidus liquid phase sintering (SLPS) on the density of sintered components manufactured using a Ni-base superalloy powder (N18) has been studied. A compression moulding technique was employed to simulate the metal injection moulding (MIM) process using coarse N18 powder, with a particle size distribution of 40–63 μm, as opposed to fine powders of less than 10μm normally used in conventional MIM. The study has demonstrated how the problem of low sintered density, encountered in solid-state sintering using coarse powders, can been overcome by SLPS and that the sintered densities of the N18 powder via the moulding process route were comparable with those produced by conventional die pressing and sintering.

Notes: Summary At low levels of activation, an isometrically-held myofibrillar preparation on the descending limb may exhibit persistent oscillations of period 1–6 s in tension and sarcomere lengths. We propose a sarcomeric theory of spontaneous oscillatory contraction, based on the phenomena of force creep and delayed length activation. The time delay leads to oscillations and controls their period. A computer model using these ideas simulates spontaneous oscillatory contraction for fixed-end fibres only if isometric tension capacity varies slightly along the fibre. The form of this inhomogeneity controls a diversity of spontaneous oscillatory contraction behaviour: the tension waveform can vary from large and sinusoidal to small-amplitude pulses or chaotic behaviour, and these variations are observed in slow-twitch soleus fibres from the same animal (rat). The model predicts that oscillatory and quiescent regions coexist in the fibre, with large-amplitude sawtooth waveforms in sarcomere length in the former as observed. It can also generate travelling-wave structures, similar to those found by the Tokyo group, in oscillating regions when there is a spatial gradient in isometric tension capacity. Phase discontinuities in sarcomere length occur near the oscillatory-quiescent boundary. Predictions for the Ca2+ concentrations and sarcomere lengths in which spontaneous oscillatory contraction occurs and for differences in the spontaneous oscillatory contraction frequencies of fast-and slow-twitch fibres compare well with experiment. Spontaneous oscillatory contraction is also predicted under isotonic conditions.
