    Notes: The control of magnetic islands is a crucial issue in designing stellarators. Islands are associated with resonant radial magnetic fields at rational rotational-transform surfaces and can lead to chaos and poor plasma confinement. In this article it is shown that variations in the resonant fields of a full pressure stellarator equilibrium can be related to variations in the boundary via a coupling matrix, and that inversion of this matrix determines a boundary modification for which the island content is significantly reduced. The numerical procedure is described and the results of island optimization are presented. Equilibria with islands are computed using the Princeton Iterative Equilibrium Solver, and resonant radial fields are calculated via construction of quadratic-flux-minimizing surfaces. A design candidate for the National Compact Stellarator Experiment [A. Reimann, L. Ku, D. Monticello et al., Phys. Plasmas 8, 2083 (2001)], which has a large island, is used to illustrate the technique. Small variations in the boundary shape are used to reduce island size and to reverse the phase of a major island chain. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Strategies for the improvement of quasiaxisymmetric stellarator configurations are explored. Calculations of equilibrium flux surfaces for candidate configurations are also presented. One optimization strategy is found to generate configurations with improved neoclassical confinement, simpler coils with lower current density, and improved flux surface quality relative to previous designs. The flux surface calculations find significant differences in the extent of islands and stochastic regions between candidate configurations. (These calculations do not incorporate the predicted beneficial effects of perturbed bootstrap currents.) A method is demonstrated for removing low order islands from candidate configurations by relatively small modifications of the configuration. One configuration is identified as having particularly desirable properties for a proposed experiment. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: For a given nonintegrable toroidal magnetic field, a nearby integrable magnetic field is constructed from quadratic-flux minimizing surfaces. A new mathematical definition and derivation of quadratic-flux minimizing surfaces, which directly exploits the analogy between toroidal magnetic fields and 1〈fraction SHAPE="CASE"〉12 degree of freedom Hamiltonian systems, is given. The width and phase of magnetic islands (calculated from the shear of the integrable field and the magnitude and phase of the perturbation harmonics) are in excellent agreement with detailed Poincaré plots. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Summary Nanoscale composites of a modified silicate with either high-density polyethylene (HDPE) or a nitrile copolymer have been examined. Hydrophilic silicate clay was intercalated by ion exchange reaction of alkylammonium ions. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results revealed that so-modified silicate layers were finely dispersed in these polymeric matrices. Instead of being individually dispersed, most layers were found in thin stacks comprising several swollen layers. Greater dispersion was found in the nitrile copolymer rather than in HDPE, suggesting differences in the degree of physical interaction with the modified clay. Lamellar crystals of HDPE formed parallel to the silicate layers.

    Notes: Abstract An electronic patient database linking prescribes with a Dutch community pharmacy consortium was evaluated in a subset of the population of Noordwijk (11,760 patients out of a total of 25,600). The pharmacy database (a file of 41 disease contra‐indications representing a subset of the prescribers' medical diagnosis) was studied in order to assess its value for the accurate discrimination of target patient groups within the community and for support to the pharmaceutical care of individual patients. The aim was to examine the application of the pharmacy records to pharmaceutical care, tested by measuring the accuracy of the pharmacy database to predict the community public health profile; and, more specifically, the accuracy to identify three potential target groups for pharmaceutical care. The records of patients with angina, chronic respiratory disease and diabetes (n=1116), representing 65% of the total pharmacy morbidity records, were studied in detail and verified by the files and texts of the prescriber's individual patient records. From samples of patients (n=273) from the three patient groups, the extent and nature of co‐morbidity, polypharmacy (drug entities prescribed annually) and drug therapy instability (prescription changes to dose or dose form annually) were characterised. Angina patients showed the most co‐morbidity, 46% having three or more additional diseases; chronic respiratory disease patients showed most drug therapy instability; and insulin‐dependent diabetic patients received most polypharmacy per disease. The pharmacy database predicted the prevalence of 10 of 23 relevant disease categories (representing 51% of the total morbidity on the medical records). However, the prevalences of eight categories were underestimated and of five categories overestimated. Of the three patient groups, 73% of patients appeared on both the pharmacy and the medical database. Of the total co‐morbidity recorded for these patients, 68% of records were common to both databases. The database discrepancies (32%) were due to morbidity omitted (12%) and morbidity unverified (10%) on the pharmacy database, together with morbidity omitted from the medical database (10%). The current pharmacy database provides a limited view of morbidity. A strategic approach to pharmaceutical care requires pharmacists and prescribers to verify and share patient information if patient groups and individuals within a group are to be usefully targeted.

    Notes: The morphology and optical properties of polymer stabilized liquid crystals formed in a more highly ordered low molecular weight liquid crystal solvent were studied. Tetrafunctional, mesogenic monomers (with and without flexible spacers) were polymerized in isotropic, nematic and smectic phases of the LC solvent (4′-octyl-4-cyanobiphenyl) and studied with scanning electron microscopy and cross-polarized light microscopy. The network morphology of the nematic and isotropic phase polymerizations showed strong similarities with the corresponding polymerizations in other solvents.Polymerization in the smectic phase, however, resulted in marked increases in network order and directionality. Most dramatically, even the polymer without flexible spacer formed a fibrous network of rodlike units, in contrast to the random, beaded texture formed by the same polymer in nematic or isotropic conditions. Correspondingly, a large increase in birefringence demonstrated significant polymer orientation and more effective orientational interaction with the liquid crystalline solvent.
