Notes: 1 The purpose of this study was to demonstrate that the adrenergic nervous system regulates the in vivo choline levels in the mouse major salivary glands. 2 Methoxamine (α1-adrenoceptor agonist, 2.5–20 mg kg−1, s.c.) elevated choline levels dose-dependently and the effect of methoxamine (10 mg kg−1) was completely inhibited by the α-adrenoceptor antagonist phentolamine (5 mg kg−1, i.p.) but not by the β-adrenoceptor antagonist propranolol (3 mg kg−1, i.p.). 3 In contrast, isoprenaline (β-adrenoceptor agonist 0.25–20 mg kg−1, s.c.) lowered choline levels and the effect of isoprenaline (2 mg kg−1) was inhibited by propranolol, but not by phentolamine. 4 Noradrenaline (1–4 mg kg−1, s.c.) manifested both the α- and β-adrenergic actions depending on its dose. Noradrenaline at 1–2 mg kg−1, lowered choline levels and the effect of noradrenaline (1 mg kg−1) was inhibited by propranolol, but not by phentolamine. On the other hand, noradrenaline (4 mg kg−1) elevated choline levels and the effect was blocked by phentolamine, but not by propranolol. 5 Tyramine (5–80 mg kg−1, s.c.) elicited the release of noradrenaline from sympathetic nerve terminals and induced essentially the same effects on the choline levels as noradrenaline. Tyramine (10 mg kg−1) lowered choline levels and the effect was inhibited by propranolol, but not by phentolamine. However, tyramine (80 mg kg−1) elevated choline levels and the effect was inhibited by phentolamine, but not by propranolol. 6 These results suggest that choline levels in the salivary glands may be under separate α- and β-adrenergic control and suggest a possibility that the neurotransmitter noradrenaline released for sympathetic nerve terminals can manage the dual control of choline levels in some autonomic organs in a characteristic dose-dependent manner.

Notes: Probing of streaming electron plasmas with finite temperature is studied. For the first time, a current-voltage characteristic of an electric probe is measured in electron plasmas. Due to the fast flow of the electron plasmas, the characteristic curve spreads out significantly and exhibits a long tail. This feature can be explained calculating the currents collected to the probe. In flowing electron plasmas, the distribution function observed in the laboratory frame is non-Maxwellian even if the plasmas come to a state of thermal equilibrium. Another significant feature of the characteristic is that it determines a floating potential where the current equals zero, despite there being very few ions in the electron plasma. A high impedance probe, which is popularly used to determine the space potential of electron plasmas, outputs the potential. The method is available only for plasmas with density much smaller than the Brillouin limit. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Magnetic and transport properties of Cr-based III–V diluted magnetic semiconductor Ga1−xCrxAs Cr concentrations up to x=0.10 have been investigated. For all the films, no long-range magnetic order was observed down to 2 K. A sign of paramagnetic Curie temperature is positive, indicating that the dominant magnetic interaction between Cr atoms is ferromagnetic. The effective number of Bohr magneton is estimated to be 5.1±0.4, which is close to that of Cr2+ ion. The magnetization curve shows superparamagnetic behavior at low temperatures. The radius of the local spin order in x=0.034 is estimated to be 1.5–2.0 nm at T=5 K and it decreases with increasing temperature. From Hall effect measurements at room temperature, the magnitude of mobility is estimated to be less than 0.5 cm2/V s. This low mobility strongly suggests that the hopping conductivity is dominant in Ga1−xCrxAs films. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectra of Zn1−xTMxO (TM=Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, and Cu) films were measured to clarify their magneto-optical properties. Noticeable magneto-optical effect was not observed for Zn1−xScxO, Zn1−xTixO, Zn1−xVxO, and Zn1−xCrxO. On the contrary, Zn1−xMnxO, Zn1−xCoxO, Zn1−xNixO, and Zn1−xCuxO showed pronounced negative MCD peaks near 3.4 eV which correspond to the band gap of the host ZnO semiconductor. These results show that ZnO alloyed with Mn, Co, Ni, and Cu is a diluted magnetic semiconductor with strong exchange interaction between sp-band carriers and localized d electrons. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Strong magneto-optical effect of Zn1−xCoxO near the optical band gap is reported. Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) and Faraday rotation of Zn1−xCoxO (x=0.012 and 0.016) at 5 K are as high as 2°/cm Oe at 3.4 eV, which are about two orders larger than those of ZnO. Absence of strong Co2+ d–d* transition near the optical band gap makes Zn1−xCoxO an useful material for short-wavelength magneto-optical applications. Large magneto-optical effects and paramagnetic temperature dependence of MCD show a strong mixing of the sp bands of the host ZnO with Co2+ d orbitals. The polarity of the MCD peak is negative indicating the antiferromagnetic p–d exchange interaction. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have grown high-crystallinity ZnO thin films on lattice-matched ScAlMgO4 substrates by pulsed-laser deposition with doping donor (Ga) and acceptor (N) simultaneously. Alternating ablation of ceramics with concentrated Ga addition and highly pure single crystal targets yielded in a controlled Ga concentration (CGa) in a wide range of 1018–1020 cm−3 with minimal contamination of undesired impurities such as Al and Si. The use of the originally developed temperature-gradient method, where controlled and continuous gradient of the growth temperature is given to the single substrate with a range of about 50–200 °C, results in a continuous spread of N concentration (CN) in a controlled fashion. Therefore, the ratio of CN/CGa can be varied continuously in a wide range for each film, assuring that a region satisfying p-type codoping condition predicted by T. Yamamoto and H. K. Yoshida [Jpn. J. Appl. Phys., Part 2 38, L166 (1999)] is included in the sample. The electrical properties were measured for over thousand specimens of lithographically patterned Hall bars without observing any sign of p-type conduction. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A Ni atom is employed as the energy donor to a Cu upper laser level. After the energy transfer is done by collision between Ni and Cu atoms, the population of the Cu upper laser level is enhanced via a cascading decay resulting in a four-level excitation loop. The peak value of the lasing pulse was increased by a rate of 400%, whereas the pulse width was not changed. The near-infrared spectra, λ=809.3 and 793.3 nm, emitted via this cascading decay method, were also observed and the intensity properties agreed with that of the lasing lines. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Over 0.1 mW ultraviolet output was achieved by an AlGaN-based light-emitting diode. To realize a highly conductive and ultraviolet-transparent layer, a short-period alloy superlattice was introduced. The device was fabricated on SiC substrate. Low electric resistivity due to the short-period alloy superlattice and the high thermal conductivity of the SiC substrate enabled large current injection of up to 1.7 kA/cm2. The emission was monochromatic band-edge emission about 350 nm in wavelength without significant D–A and/or deep emissions. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
