Notizen: The inheritance of resistance to fusarium wilt race 0 of chickpea and linked random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were studied in two F6:7 recombinant inbred line (RIL) populations. These RILs were developed from the crosses CA2156 × JG62 (susceptible × resistant) and CA2139 × JG62 (resistant × resistant), and were sown in a field infected with fusarium wilt race 0 in Beja (Tunisia) over 2 years. A1:1 resistant to susceptible ratio was found in the RIL population from the CA2156 × JG62 cross, indicating that a single gene with two alleles controlled resistance. In the second RIL population (CA2139 × JG62) a 3:1 resistant to susceptible ratio indicated that two genes were present and that either gene was sufficient to confer resistance. Linkage analysis showed a RAPD marker, OPJ20600, linked to resistance in both RIL populations, which is present in the resistant parent JG62.

Notizen: A total of 752 faba bean accessions were screened under field conditions for resistance to Ascochyta fabae. Several methods of assessing disease development were compared for evaluating the resistance of these accessions. Thirty-four accessions displayed low disease severity ratings. In 15 of them, lesions were restricted in size and number, whereas in the remaining 19, lesions were well developed but scarce. These lines could have been discarded if screening had depended only on scales based on lesion type, which shows the need to complement such scores with disease severity or to use a simplified scale that integrates both lesion type and the amount of damage.

Notizen: There is an increasing interest in the legume species Medicago truncatula as a model plant for structural and functional genomic studies that can be used to identify agronomically important genes in legumes. Field screening has shown very high levels of resistance to Orobanche crenata in M. truncatula. However, in vitro studies with O. crenata, Orobanche foetida, Orobanche ramosa and Orobanche minor showed useful variation among accessions at early stages of the parasite–host interaction. Significant differences were observed in the levels of germination of O. crenata and O. foetida seeds induced by different accessions of M. truncatula. Only limited germination was observed on accession SA-4327. All accessions induced little O. ramosa and O. minor germination. Accessions also varied in the number of O. crenata and O. foetida attachments supported, with few developing on accession SA-27774. The variation observed for induction of germination and of subsequent attachment will be useful to isolating and characterizing genes involved in the early stages of Orobanche–host plant interaction and for the study of the biosynthetic pathways of production for germination stimulants.

Notizen: Examines the literature relating to the implementation of quality assurance systems and then uses a questionnaire to a number of organisations and consultants to compare "practice" with "theory". Analyses the implementation process for quality assurance systems designed to meet the requirements of the ISO 9000 standard to identify the role of the different "actors" to find out which factors facilitate the implementation or make it more difficult. Suggests that the primary motivation for introducing ISO 9000 systems is to improve image and reputation rather than processes.

Notizen: A collection of 648 accessions of Vicia faba was screened for resistance to faba bean rust (Uromyces viciae-fabae). Two distinct types of resistance were identified, both resulting in reduced disease severity (DS) and area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC), but differing in the expression of hypersensitivity. One should be regarded as incomplete nonhypersensitive resistance and the other as incomplete resistance with late hypersensitivity. The hypersensitive resistance, which has not been reported before, was not dependent on temperature or plant age. These two types of resistance were characterized by three macroscopic components of resistance: increased latent period (LP), decreased colony size (CS) and a relatively reduced infection frequency (IF), both on seedlings and on adult plants. LP and CS were the components of nonhypersensitive resistance most highly correlated with DS and AUDPC measured under field conditions. The presence of necrosis was an additional component in the hypersensitive resistant response.

Notizen: In the title compound, C23H34O4, the two saturated six-membered rings have slightly flattened chair conformations and the unsaturated ring assumes a 8β,9α-half chair conformation distorted towards a 8β-sofa. The five-membered ring has an unusual conformation close to a 13β-envelope. The acetoxy and methyl ketone substituents are twisted with respect to the average molecular plane of the steroid nucleus. The molecules are hydrogen-bonded head-to-head via the hydroxy and methyl ketone groups forming dimers, which are stacked in planes perpendicular to the b axis.

Notizen: The title compound, C23H32O4, has a 3β configuration, with the epoxy O atom at 16α,17α. Rings A and C have slightly distorted chair conformations. Because of the presence of the C5=C6 double bond, ring B assumes an 8β,9α-half-chair conformation slightly distorted towards an 8β-sofa. Ring D has a conformation close to a 14α-envelope. The acetoxy and acetyl substituents are twisted with respect to the average molecular plane of the steroid. The conformation of the molecule is compared with that given by a quantum chemistry calculation using the RHF–AM1 (RHF = Roothaan Hartree–Fock) Hamiltonian model. Cohesion of the crystal can be attributed to van der Waals interactions and weak intermolecular C—H...O interactions, which link the molecules head-to-tail along [101].

Notizen: Abstract  Inoculation of the oilseed halophyte Salicornia bigelovii Torr. with eight species of halotolerant bacteria, grown in seawater-irrigated pots under environmental conditions native to the plant's habitat, resulted in significant plant growth promotion by the end of the growing season, 8–11 months later. Statistical analysis demonstrated that inoculation with Azospirillum halopraeferens, a mixture of two Azospirillum brasilense strains, a mixture of Vibrio aestuarianus and Vibrio proteolyticus, or a mixture of Bacillus licheniformis and Phyllobacterium sp. significantly increased plant height and dry weight at the end of the season. Some of the bacterial strains also increased the number of side branches and the size of the spikes. The bacteria did not affect the number of seeds or their weight. Inoculation with the mangrove cyanobacterium Microcoleus chthonoplastes had no effect on plant foliage variables. At the end of the growing season, the N and protein content of the plant foliage was significantly reduced by bacterial inoculation; however, the N and protein content of seeds significantly increased. The P content in foliage increased significantly in plants treated with all the bacteria except M. chthonoplastes, whereas the total lipid content of foliage increased significantly only when plants were inoculated with a mixture of A. brasilense strains or with M. chthonoplastes. In three inoculation treatments palmitic acid in seeds significantly increased and linoleic acid significantly decreased. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using bacteria to promote the growth of halotolerant plants cultivated for forage and seed production in proposed seawater-irrigated agriculture.

Notizen: Abstract Protoscolices of Echinococcus granulosus were incubated in vitro with praziquantel (PZ), albendazole (ABZ), or a combination of both (PZ + ABZ). PZ and ABZ displayed slower protoscolicidal activity when applied separately than when used in combination. Despite the low PZ + ABZ concentrations used, protoscolex viability dropped rapidly (within 15 days). At this time, cysts did not develop following their inoculation into mice. The ultrastructural changes induced in the protoscolices by PZ + ABZ were (a) the loss of sucker concavity, (b) tegumental contraction of the soma region, (c) the formation of digitiform tegumental extensions, (d) destruction of the tegument, and (e) the degeneration of parenchyma cells as reflected by the presence of numerous lamellar bodies. The PZ + ABZ treatment was effective only against small cysts, which had collapsed at 10 days postinoculation (p.i.). This treatment caused the following alterations: (a) loss of cyst turgidity at 6 days p.i.; (b) separation of the laminated and germinal layers; (c) loss of microtriches; (d) the appearance of numerous lipid droplets in the inner region of the germinal layer; (e) vacuolation of the cyton cytoplasm; and (f ) the formation of abundant autophagosomes, which finally led to loss of the integrity of the germinal layer.

Notizen: Abstract Homogeneous catalysts for the water gas shift reaction prepared from Rh2(μ-Pz)2(COD)2 (Pz = pyrazolate ion and COD = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) in aqueous organic solvent media (pyridine, 4-picoline or 2-ethoxyethanol) and Rh2(μ-Pz)2(CO)2(TPPMS)2 (TPPMS = meta-sulfonatophenyl-diphenyldiphosphine) in acidic aqueous media under mild conditions are described. In situ FT-IR, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopic studies of the Rh2(μ-Pz)2(COD)2 catalytic system reveal the presence of hydrido-Rh complexes with linear and bridging carbonyls. These complexes also catalyze the reduction of nitrobenzene to aniline.
