    Notes: Abstract Using observations with the ALOMAR SOUSY radar near Andenes (69.3°N, 16.0°E) from 1994 until 1997 polar mesosphere summer echoes (PMSE) have been investigated in dependence on geomagnetic K indices derived at the Auroral Observatory Tromsø (69.66°N, 18.94°E). During night-time and morning hours a significant correlation between the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the radar results and the geomagnetic K indices could be detected with a maximum correlation near midnight. The correlation becomes markedly smaller in the afternoon and early evening hours with a minimum near 17 UT. This diurnal variation is in reasonable agreement with riometer absorption at Ivalo (68.55°N, 27.28°E) and can be explained by the diurnal variation of ionization due to precipitating high energetic particles. Therefore, a part of the diurnal PMSE variation is caused by this particle precipitation. The variability of the solar EUV variation, however, has no significant influence on the PMSE during the observation period.

    Notes: We report fabrication and measurements with two- and four-point probes with nanoscale dimensions, for high spatial resolution conductivity measurements on surfaces and thin films. By combination of conventional microfabrication and additive three-dimensional nanolithography, we have obtained electrode spacings down to 200 nm. At the tips of four silicon oxide microcantilevers, narrow carbon tips are grown in converging directions and subsequently coated with a conducting layer. The probe is placed in contact with a conducting surface, whereby the electrode resistance can be determined. The nanoelectrodes withstand considerable contact force before breaking. The probe offers a unique possibility to position the voltage sensors, as well as the source and drain electrodes in areas of nanoscale dimensions. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: SUMMARY 1. Negative effects of zooplankton on the availability of phosphorus (P) for phytoplankton as a result of the retention of nutrients in zooplankton biomass and the sedimentation of exoskeletal remains after moulting, have been recently proposed.2. In a mesocosm study, the relative importance of these mechanisms was tested for the freshwater cladoceran Daphnia hyalina×galeata. A total of 13 mesocosm bags was suspended in a mesotrophic German lake during summer 2000 and fertilised with inorganic P in order to obtain a total nitrogen to total P ratio closer to the Redfield ratio. D. hyalina×galeata was then added at a logarithmically scaled density gradient of up to 40 ind. L−1. Zooplankton densities, dissolved inorganic, particulate organic (seston 〈100 μm), as well as total nutrient concentrations were monitored. Additionally, nutrient concentrations of sediment water removed from the bottom of the mesocosm bags via a manual pump were determined.3. Seston carbon (C), seston P and total P were significantly negatively correlated with Daphnia densities. The amount of particulate P (∼5–6 μg P L−1) sequestered from the seston compartment by Daphnia corresponded roughly to the increase of zooplankton biomass (population growth). Soluble reactive phosphorous (SRP) was at all times high (∼25–35 μg P L−1) and possibly unavailable to phytoplankton as a result of P adsorption to calcite during a calcite precipitation event (whiting). P concentrations determined in sediment water were generally 〈60 μg P m−2 and thus never exceeded 1% of the total amount of P bound in particulate matter of the overlying water column.4. Seston C : P ratios followed a polynomial second-order function: At Daphnia densities 〈40 ind. L−1 a positive linear relationship was evident, which is explained by the stronger reduction of P compared with C in seston, and transfer of seston P to zooplankton. Highest seston C : P ratios of ∼300 : 1 were observed at Daphnia densities of ∼30–50 ind. L−1, which is in agreement with proposed threshold values limiting Daphnia reproductive growth. At Daphnia densities 〉40–50 ind. L−1 C : P ratios were decreased because of the strong reduction of seston C at close to constantly low seston P-values of ∼3–4 μg P L−1.5. At least for Daphnia, it may be concluded that – unlike population growth – the sedimentation of faecal pellets and carapaces after moulting seem negligible processes in pelagic phosphorus dynamics.

    Notes: The present study evaluated how different photoperiods, carbohydrate sources and inclusion levels influenced growth, plasma, organ and body compositions in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Four different diets were used, containing 10 or 20% starch on a dry matter basis, using gelatinized corn (C10 and C20) or wheat (W10 and W20). Two different photoperiods were used, Continuous (Con) light throughout the study, Winter (Wi) two initial weeks of continuous light, thereafter 6 weeks of short day, ending with 6 weeks of continuous light. The winter regime resulted in reduced growth rate compared with continuous light. All Wi groups were smaller than Con groups when the experiment was terminated, except for fish given diet C10. Diet W10 resulted in better growth compared with all other groups when exposed to Con. regime. Atlantic salmon fed with diets containing 20% starch had lower growth rates than fish fed diets containing 10% starch, when the same starch source and light regime were compared. All fish belonging to the Con group exhibited similar and higher condition factors compared with fish from groups Wi. Condition factor was not influenced by dietary starch source. Higher whole body lipid concentrations were found when fish were given the corn compared with the wheat diets, without any responses to starch level or light regime. Whole body protein showed increased values in fish exposed to regime Wi compared with Con, without any influence from dietary manipulation. Liver glycogen values and hepatosomatic index reflected dietary starch levels and were significantly influenced by light regime, whilst muscle glycogen levels varied only as a response to light regime with lower values in fish from the Wi compared with the Con groups. Light regime influenced plasma glucose levels, except in groups fed with diet W10. All measured plasma nutrient concentrations were within normal ranges.At the end of the feeding period, all fish were evaluated for glucose and salt water tolerance to ascertain whether diet and/or light regime influenced glucose regulation capacity and/or smolt quality. Fish fed with 20% starch had reduced osmoregulatory ability measured as plasma chloride after a seawater challenge test. Fish from the Wi regime, but not from the Con regime developed characteristics associated with smoltification. Glucose tolerance in Atlantic salmon was substantially influenced by both photoperiod regime and diet. Fish reared under the Wi photoperiod showed reduced glucose regulation capacity compared with fish held under continuous light. Glucose regulation capacity was also reduced in fish adapted to the highest starch levels.

    Notes: To determine seasonal variation in growth and feed conversion ratio (FCR), Atlantic salmon postsmolts (Salmo salar L.) were exposed to either simulated natural photoperiod (SNP) for 12 months or continuous light (LL) from January to June followed by SNP until December. Feed was given to excess and uneaten feed pellets were collected after every meal for estimation of feed intake and calculation of FCR. Body weight increased from 1086 ± 9 g (mean ± SEM) in January to 4970 ± 7 g (SNP) and 5190 ± 23 g (LL) in December. Specific growth rate (SGR), condition factor and feed intake displayed strong seasonal variation in both groups. Measurements of the thermal growth coefficient correlated highly with SGR (r = 0.98, P 〈 0.05), indicating that the seasonal variation in SGR was independent of temperature and fish size. Continuous light treatment resulted in increased growth from spring, while the fish exposed to simulated natural light had increased growth rate in late summer. Furthermore, LL improved FCR. Periods of high SGR were concurrent with periods of low FCR in both groups.

    Notes: With the aim of elucidating seasonally changing lipid metabolism in immature Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) in sea water, one group was reared under simulated natural light, while one group was reared under continuous light. Fatty acid profile in plasma lipoproteins did not vary during the experiment, while β-oxidation capacity increased during spring, concurrent with decreasing temperatures. Simultaneously, the relative level of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) in muscle tissue decreased (42–36%). Muscle levels of saturated fatty acids were low during early spring (19%), but then increased slowly, and muscle levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids increased during spring (from 36% to 39%). It is suggested that increased spring growth and the concomitant energy demand was met by increased lipid oxidation, where MUFA were preferred as energy substrate.

    Notes: In order to investigate how seasonal variation in growth affects selected fillet quality parameters, immature Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) were reared under simulated natural photoperiod (SNP) for 12 months or continuous light (LL) from January to June followed by SNP until December. Photoperiod treatments advanced the growth rate pattern of the LL group compared with the SNP group and influenced macronutrient metabolism, evaluated both as trends in protein and lipid retention and in fillet lipid and protein levels. Good growth was associated with low fillet lipid and protein level, in addition to reduced levels of fillet tocopherol and astaxanthin, indicating increased oxidative stress. Elevated levels of thiobarbituric reactive substances (TBARs) further supported this. Slaughtering during periods of high growth may therefore reduce postmortem quality, both because of increased susceptibility to fillet lipid peroxidation and reduced astaxanthin levels, which were lowered in vivo and might consequently be depleted further after slaughter. Specialized use of antioxidant-rich feed prior to slaughter is suggested if slaughtering is expected to occur during periods of high growth rate.

    Notes: Temperature influenced the developmental rate, survival and early growth of eggs and embryos of spotted wolffish, Anarhichas minor (Olafsen), an interesting candidate for cold water cultivation. The total incubation period decreased from 220 days at 4 °C (880 daydegrees), to 177 days at 6 °C (1062 daydegrees) and 150 days at 8 °C (1200 daydegrees) in these experiments. The proportion of normal embryos and survival of eggs until hatching were highest when the eggs were incubated at 6 °C. During the incubation period, the embryo and yolk sac size at 280 daydegrees was not significantly different but at 850 daydegrees the embryo size was inversely related to temperature and the remaining yolk sac size positively correlated with the incubation temperature. The transformation of yolk to body mass during incubation appeared to be most efficient at 4 °C, and the embryos hatched with a larger visible yolk sac at 6 and 8 °C. The largest larvae (wet-weight) hatched from the largest eggs and the egg groups incubated at the lowest temperature (4 °C). There was no effect of temperature on meristic characters. During 6 weeks post-hatching, all larvae from the three temperature groups were fed formulated dry feed in excess at 8 °C in low water-level raceway systems. During startfeeding, the larvae from eggs incubated at the lowest temperature (4 °C) showed the highest growth rates (SGR). Best survival of larvae was noted among batches incubated at 6 °C.

    Notes: Wolffish Anarhichas lupus (Anarhichadidae) hatch from large demersal eggs (c. 5–6 mm) after a long incubation period (c. 800–1000 degree days) at 20–25 mm LT with a juvenile appearance: a small yolk sac, pigmented but partly transparent skin densely supplied with mucous cells, well developed body musculature and a cartilaginous skeleton. The results of histomorphological studies illustrate the apparent functionality of tissues and organs at hatching. The mucosa of the oral cavity and various parts of the digestive channel are well differentiated and the cellular characteristics are described within each region. A stomach with gastric glands is established before hatching. The pancreas has well developed endo- and exocrine tissue and the hepatocytes are vacuolized. The kidney tissue has numerous tubuli and haematopoietic tissue in the bilobed head region. The spleen, thymus and thyroid glands also appear mature. Cones are dominant in the visual cell layer of the retina.
