    Notes: Abstract. We present a pipelining, dynamically tunable reorder operator for providing user control during long running, data- intensive operations. Users can see partial results and accordingly direct the processing by specifying preferences for various data items; data of interest is prioritized for early processing. The reordering mechanism is efficient and non-blocking and can be used over arbitrary data streams from files and indexes, as well as continuous data feeds. We also investigate several policies for the reordering based on the performance goals of various typical applications. We present performance results for reordering in the context of an online aggregation implementation in Informix and in the context of sorting and scrolling in a large-scale spreadsheet. Our experiments demonstrate that for a variety of data distributions and applications, reordering is responsive to dynamic preference changes, imposes minimal overheads in overall completion time, and provides dramatic improvements in the quality of the feedback over time. Surprisingly, preliminary experiments indicate that online reordering can also be useful in traditional batch query processing, because it can serve as a form of pipelined, approximate sorting.

    Notes: Abstract  We have cloned and sequenced an orthologue of the human SOX9 gene in the lizard, Calotes versicolor, which lacks heteromorphic sex chromosomes as well as temperature-dependent sex determination. PCR amplification of Calotes cDNA using human SOX9 primers yielded an 861-bp fragment which harboured the high-mobility group domain and flanking sequences and had identity greater than 85% at nucleotide and greater than 90% at amino acid level with the hitherto known homologues of Sox9, demonstrating its evolutionary conservation. CvSox9 makes an approx. 5-kb transcript which is expressed in the genital ridge and mullerian duct of all the embryos from their very inception. In the genital ridge the expression in day 40 and day 45 embryos is confined to the embryonic testis (medulla) of only 50% embryos, indicating a shift in the expression from non-gonad-specific to testis-specific. The temporal and cell-specific expression in the genital ridge suggests a vital role for CvSox9 in the determination and/or differentiation of testis.

    Notes: Pure CCl3F (Freon-11) vapor, initially below its room-temperature saturated vapor pressure, was compressed behind weak incident shock waves. The initial pressure was varied from 26 to 747 mm Hg, and the shock speed was varied from 141 to 321 m/s. The equilibrium cluster-size distribution was thus perturbed to varying degrees. Under the present experimental conditions cluster-forming processes en route to homonuclear condensation were set into motion. The exothermic redistribution of cluster sizes at the new temperature and pressure was monitored using the laser-schlieren technique over a time period of 10–300 μs. A characteristic redistribution time scale was measured as a function of temperature and pressure. The measured temperature and pressure dependence of the redistribution times are different than the classical temperature and pressure dependence of lag times in supersaturated vapors. A negative activation energy is observed, indicative of a strong competition between cluster formation, redissociation, and stabilization. A stability analysis of the nonlinear kinetic mechanism leads to a criterion for the onset of oscillations, and provides a basis for extracting elementary rate constants from the observations. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In the past three years, microvia drilling using laser technology has become the dominant method of producing blind vias smaller than 150µm. The ablation characteristics of the materials used in the manufacture of PWBs can be divided into three categories: organics, glass, and metals. Organics are composed of resins and epoxies commercially available from a variety of vendors. Two types of resins that are typically used for microvia formation in the telecommunication applications are resin coated copper foil® (RCC or RCF) for subtractive PCB process, and thermal-curing resin (TCR) for additive PCB process respectively. This paper details the basics of UV YAG laser capabilities, alignment techniques, plating tests, reliability tests, manufacturable microvia design rules, and production experiences.

    Notes: The crystal structures of five new non-electrophilic β-strand-templated thrombin active-site inhibitors have been determined bound to the enzyme. Four co-crystallize with hirugen and inhibitor isomorphously to produce thrombin–hirugen crystals (monoclinic, space group C2), while one co-crystallizes in the hexagonal system, space group P65. A 1,4-substituted cyclohexyl moiety is conserved at the P1 position of all the inhibitors, along with a fused hetero-bicyclic five- and six-membered ring that occupies the P2 site. Amino, amidino and aminoimidazole groups are attached to the cyclohexyl ring for recognition at the S1 specificity site, while benzylsulfonyl and diphenyl groups enhance the binding at the S3 subsite. The cyclohexyl groups at the P1 positions of three of the inhibitors appear to be in the energetically favored chair conformation, while the imidazole-substituted cyclohexyl rings are in a boat conformation. Somewhat unexpectedly, the two cyclohexyl-aminoimidazole groups bind differently in the specificity site; the unique binding of one is heretofore unreported. The other inhibitors generally mimic arginyl binding at S1. This group of inhibitors combines the non-electrophilicity and selectivity of DAPA-like compounds and the more optimal binding features of the S1–S3 sites of thrombin for peptidic molecules, which results in highly potent (binding constants 12 nM–16 pM, one being 1.1 µM) and selective (ranging from 140 to 20 000 times more selective compared with trypsin) inhibitors of thrombin. The binding modes of these novel inhibitors are correlated with their binding constants, as is their selectivity, in order to provide further insight for the design of therapeutic antithrombotic agents that inhibit thrombin directly at the active site.

    Notes: The prevalence of tetracycline-resistant oral bacteria in healthy 4- and 6-year-old children who had not received antibiotics during the 3 months prior to sampling was investigated. Of the 47 children sampled, 46 harboured tetracycline-resistant bacteria. The median proportion of cultivable anaerobic and aerobic oral bacteria resistant to tetracycline was 1.1% and the MIC50 of these was 64 μg ml−1. The majority (56%) of tetracycline-resistant bacteria were resistant to at least one other antibiotic, usually erythromycin. The most commonly identified tetracycline-resistant bacteria were the oral streptococci (65%), the next most prevalent groups were Veillonella spp. (10%) and Neisseria spp. (9%). The most frequently identified tetracycline resistance determinant was tet(M). The results of this study have shown that tetracycline-resistant oral bacteria were widespread amongst the children studied.
