    Notes: Abstract  We have cloned and sequenced an orthologue of the human SOX9 gene in the lizard, Calotes versicolor, which lacks heteromorphic sex chromosomes as well as temperature-dependent sex determination. PCR amplification of Calotes cDNA using human SOX9 primers yielded an 861-bp fragment which harboured the high-mobility group domain and flanking sequences and had identity greater than 85% at nucleotide and greater than 90% at amino acid level with the hitherto known homologues of Sox9, demonstrating its evolutionary conservation. CvSox9 makes an approx. 5-kb transcript which is expressed in the genital ridge and mullerian duct of all the embryos from their very inception. In the genital ridge the expression in day 40 and day 45 embryos is confined to the embryonic testis (medulla) of only 50% embryos, indicating a shift in the expression from non-gonad-specific to testis-specific. The temporal and cell-specific expression in the genital ridge suggests a vital role for CvSox9 in the determination and/or differentiation of testis.

    Notes: Abstract We present a deterministic algorithm for selecting the element of rankk amongN=n 2 elements, 1≤k≤N, on ann×n mesh-connected processor array in 1.45n parallel computation steps, using constant-sized queues (for large enoughn). This is a considerable improvement over the best previous deterministic algorithm, which was based upon sorting and requires2n+o(n) steps. Our algorithm can be generalized to solve the problem of selection on higher-dimensional meshes. In particular, we present an algorithm for the three-dimensional mesh which achieves a time bound better than any of the previously known deterministic results.

    Notes: Abstract We consider the followingset intersection reporting problem. We have a collection of initially empty sets and would like to process an intermixed sequence ofn updates (insertions into and deletions from individual sets) andq queries (reporting the intersection of two sets). We cast this problem in thearithmetic model of computation of Fredman [F1] and Yao [Ya2] and show that any algorithm that fits in this model must take time Ω(q+n√q) to process a sequence ofn updates andq queries, ignoring factors that are polynomial in logn. We also show that this bound is tight in this model of computation, again to within a polynomial in logn factor, improving upon a result of Yellin [Ye]. Furthermore, we consider the caseq=O(n) with an additional space restriction. We only allow the use ofm memory locations, wherem ≤n3/2. We show a tight bound of Θ(n2/m1/3) for a sequence ofn operations, again ignoring the polynomial in logn factors.

    Notes: Abstract. We consider the problem of routing packets on an $n\times\cdots\times n$ MIMD mesh-connected array of processors augmented with row and column buses. We give lower bounds and randomized algorithms for the problem of routing k-permutations (where each processor is the source and destination of exactly k packets) on a d-dimensional mesh with buses, which we call the (k,d)-routing problem. We give a general class of ``hard'' permutations which we use to prove lower bounds for the (k,d)-routing problem, for all k,d≥ 1. For the (1,1)- and (1,2)-routing problems the worst-case permutations from this class are identical to ones published by other authors, as are the resulting lower bounds. However, we further show that the (1,d)-routing problem requires 0.72 ... n steps for d=3, 0.76 ... n steps for d=4, and slightly more than $(1-1/d)\cdot n$ steps for all d≥ 5. We also obtain new lower bounds for the (k,d)-routing problem for k,d 〉 1, which improve on the bisection lower bound in some cases. These lower bounds hold for off-line routing as well. We develop efficient algorithms for the (k,1)-routing problem and for the problem of routing k-randomizations (where each processor has k packets initially and each packet is routed to a random destination) on the one-dimensional mesh and use them in a general (k,d)-routing algorithm which improves considerably on previous results. In particular, the routing time for the (1,d)-routing problem is bounded by $(2-1/d) \cdot n + o(n)$ steps with high probability (whp), whenever $d\leq n^{1/2-\epsilon}$ for some constant ε 〉 0, and the routing time for the (k,d)-routing problem is $k\cdot n/3+o(k\cdot n)$ steps whp whenever $d=(k\cdot n)^{1/2-\epsilon}$ for some constant ε 〉 0 and k≥ 3.6 ... d, matching the bisection lower bound. We then present a simple algorithm for the (2,2)-routing problem running in 1.39 ... n+o(n) steps whp. Finally, for the important special case of routing permutations on two-dimensional meshes with buses, the (1,2)-routing problem, we give a more sophisticated algorithm that runs in 0.78 ... n+o(n) steps whp.

    Notes: Summary Carthamus lanatus is a widespread and troublesome weed of crops and pastures in Australia. It is viewed as a target for both inundative and classical biological control. As fungal biological control agents are often specific in terms of their host range, the genetic variation within the host may be important in their successful deployment. The detection of genetic variation in populations of C. lanatus from New South Wales was studied using polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based, intersimple sequence repeats (ISSR) analysis. DNA extracted from plant samples from 11 locations in New South Wales was compared with one sample from Western Australia and one accession of the closely related crop plant, safflower. The analysis indicated that there were two distinct groups of C. lanatus that correlated with location (northern and southern regions). Within-group genetic diversity, as determined by the Shannon genetic diversity index, was low at 0.33 in the southern group and 0.22 in the northern group. The presence of these groups may have implications for the biological control of C. lanatus using exotic fungi. In any screening of candidate agents, representatives of these populations should be included.

    Notes: The Helicity Injected Torus [HIT-II: T. Jarboe et al., Phys. Plasmas 5, 1807 (1998)] is a low-aspect-ratio tokamak capable of both inductive (ohmic) and Coaxial Helicity Injection (CHI) current drive. HIT-II is modest in size (major radius R=0.3 m, minor radius a=0.2 m, and on-axis toroidal field of up to 0.5 T), but has demonstrated 200 kA of toroidal plasma current, using either CHI or induction separately. The loop voltage, boundary flux, and plasma equilibrium are controlled by a real-time flux feedback system. HIT-II ohmic plasmas exhibit reconnection events during both the current ramp-up and decay, events that relax the current profile while conserving the magnetic helicity. A new operating regime for CHI plasmas, using a double-null divertor (DND) boundary flux, has been explored. DND CHI plasmas exhibit good shot-to-shot reproducibility, low impurity content, minimal shorting current in the absorber region, and EFIT-reconstructed equilibria consistent with significant closed-flux core regions [EFIT: L. Lao et al., Nucl. Fusion 25, 1611 (1985)]. HIT-II DND CHI discharges also exhibit a continuous n=1 mode at the outer midplane, a mode that has been correlated experimentally with current-profile relaxation. A detailed explanation of helicity injection current drive has been developed, which is consistent with experimental observations of HIT and HIT-II discharges. According to this mechanism, asymmetric distortion of the n=1 mode structure generates current drive in the core plasma by dynamo action, relaxing the CHI-driven current profile. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In this article we describe a simple fast pulse gas valve developed for use in a plasma discharge experiment. The valve delivers 1017–1019 molecules per pulse varied by changing the voltage on the electromagnetic driver power supply. Valve pulse widths are observed to be less than 300 μs full width at half maximum with a rise time of less than 100 μs resulting in a maximum gas flow rate of ∼1022 molecules per second. An optical transmission technique was used to determine the mechanical opening and closing characteristics of the valve piston. A fast ionization gauge (FIG) was used for diagnosis of the temporal character of the gas pulse while the total gas throughput was determined by measuring the change in pressure per pulse in a small test chamber with a convectron tube gauge. Calibration of the FIG was accomplished by comparing the net change in pressure in a large chamber as measured by the FIG to the net change in pressure in a small test chamber as measured by the convectron tube gauge.

    Notes: Microwave dielectric parameters are measured for lithium-zinc ferrites with chemical formula Li0.5−x/2Fe2.5−x/2ZnxO4 (x=0.0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.6). All the samples except x=0.5, show an increase in the dielectric loss with temperature. A relaxation-type mechanism is observed for x=0.5. The results are compared with the low-frequency dielectric constant and loss.
