Notizen: Evidence is presented of a lateral variation in differential stress during metamorphism along a regional metamorphic belt on the basis of the proportion of microboudinaged piemontite grains (p) in a quartz matrix in metacherts. It is proposed that p is a practical indicator of relative differential stress. Analysis of 123 metacherts from the 800 km long Sambagawa metamorphic belt, Japan, reveals that p-values range from 〈 0.01 to 0.7 in this region. Most samples from Wakayama in the mid-belt area have p-values of 0.4–0.6, whereas those from western Shikoku have p-values of 〈 0.1. This difference cannot be explained by variations in metamorphic temperature, and is instead attributed to a regional, lateral variation in differential stress during metamorphism.

Notizen: Transparent lanthanum-doped lead zirconate titanate (PLZT) ceramics with high density were fabricated using spark plasma sintering (SPS), a recently developed hot-pressing method. A wet–dry combination method was used to prepare the fine PLZT powders. The average grain size of the PLZT ceramics was less than 1 μm, because of a relatively low sintering temperature and a very short sintering time. The transmittance of PLZT ceramics increased with an increase of calcination temperature up to 700°C and then it slightly decreased with further increase of calcination temperature. The transmittance strongly depended on the SPS temperature and heat-treatment temperature. The pellet sintered at 900°C for 10 min and heat treated at 800°C for 1 h with a thickness of 0.5 mm showed a transmittance of 31% at a wavelength of 700 nm. The relationships between the transmittance and the microstructure were investigated.

Notizen: Mechanisms for carrier generation in zinc antimonate (ZnSb2O6) with a wide band gap were examined in relation to its crystallinity. ZnSb2O6 prepared by the reaction of Sb2O5 sol and 3ZnCO3·4Zn(OH)2 was sintered at 893, 1173, and 1393 K, and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), electrical conductivity and diffuse reflectance measurements. A higher conductivity was found for ZnSb2O6 sintered at lower temperatures. Rietveld analysis of XRD patterns showed that the cations in conductive ZnSb2O6 occupied irregular sites, similar to the random rutile structure. Electron carriers were also considered to be generated by oxygen vacancies in ZnSb2O6 samples which have a structure similar to the random rutile structure.

Notizen: The antibacterial activity of photocatalytic titanium dioxide (TiO2) thin films with photodeposited silver on the surface of sanitary ware was studied. Samples were prepared by coating a TiO2 sol that was calcined at 880°–980°C and photodeposited with silver ions onto the glazed layer of the sanitary ware. The relationships between the antibacterial activity and the fabrication conditions were investigated by X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, and colorimetry. The phase of TiO2 identified in the thin films was a mixture of anatase and rutile. The amount of rutile phase increased as the calcination temperature increased, and grain growth of the TiO2 particles was observed. The activity was dependent on the TiO2 thickness, the calcination temperature, and the amount of silver. These results suggest that the antibacterial activity was strongly affected by the amount of anatase in the thin films.

Notizen: A novel aqueous chemical solution was developed as a precursor both for LiNbO3 powder and thin film. In this method, hydrogen peroxide aqueous solution (H2O2) reacts with niobium and lithium alkoxide ethanol solution to form metal peroxide aqueous solution. From this solution, crystalline LiNbO3 were synthesized at a temperature as low as 350°C. LiNbO3 thin films with well-developed grains were fabricated by spin-coating on silicon and sapphire substrates. In comparison with the alkoxide solution method, this peroxide solution method provides significant advantages, such as low weight loss in the sintering process and easy handling.
