Notes: Abstract. Molecular and morphological evidence points to the ancyromonad Ancyromonas as a plausible candidate for the closest relative to the common ancestor of metazoans, fungi, and choanoflagellates (the Opisthokonta). Using 18S rDNA sequences from most of the major eukaryotic lineages, maximum-likelihood, minimum-evolution, and maximum-parsimony analyses yielded congruent phylogenies supporting this hypothesis. Combined with ultrastructural similarities between Ancyromonas and opisthokonts, the evidence presented here suggests that Ancyromonas may form an independent lineage, the Ancyromonadida Cavalier-Smith 1997, closer in its relationship to the opisthokonts than is its nearest protist relatives, the Apusomonadida. However, the very low bootstrap support for deep nodes and hypothesis testing indicate that the resolving power of 18S rDNA sequences is limited for examining this aspect of eukaryotic phylogeny. Alternate branching positions for the Ancyromonas lineage cannot be robustly rejected, revealing the importance of ultrastructure when examining the origins of multicellularity. The future use of a multigene approach may additionally be needed to resolve this aspect of eukaryotic phylogeny.

Notes: The prokaryotic community inhabiting the deep subsurface sediments in the Forearc Basin of the Nankai Trough southeast of Japan (ODP Site 1176) was analyzed by 16S rDNA sequencing. Sediment samples from 1.15, 51.05, 98.50 and 193.96 m below sea floor (mbsf) harbored highly diverse bacterial communities. The most frequently retrieved clones included members of the Green non-sulfur bacteria whose closest relatives come from deep subsurface environments, a new epsilon-proteobacterial phylotype, and representatives of a cluster of closely related bacterial sequences from hydrocarbon- and methane-rich sediments around the world. Archaeal clones were limited to members of the genus Thermococcus, and were only obtained from the two deepest samples.

Notes: . Eighteen strains of flagellated protists representing nine species were isolated and cultured from four deep-sea hydrothermal vents: Juan de Fuca Ridge (2,200 m), Guaymas Basin (2,000 m), 21° N (2,550 m) and 9° N (2,000 m). Light and electron microscopy were used to identify flagellates to genus and, when possible, species. The small subunit ribosomal RNA genes of each vent species and related strains from shallow-waters and the American Type Culture Collection were sequenced then used for comparative analysis with database sequences to place taxa in an rDNA tree. The hydrothermal vent flagellates belonged to six different taxonomic orders: the Ancyromonadida, Bicosoecida, Cercomonadida, Choanoflagellida, Chrysomonadida, and Kinetoplastida. Comparative analysis of vent isolate and database sequences resolved systematic placement of some well-known species with previously uncertain taxonomic affinities, such as Ancyromonas sigmoides, Caecitellus parvulus and Maxxixteria marina. Many of these vent isolates are ubiquitous members of marine, freshwater, and terrestrial ecosystems worldwide, suggesting a global distribution of these flagellate species.

Notes: Abstract The xedni calculus attack on the elliptic curve discrete logarithm problem (ECDLP) involves lifting points from the finite field $${\mathbb{F}}_p$$ to the rational numbers $${\mathbb{Q}}$$ and then constructing an elliptic curve over $${\mathbb{Q}}$$ that passes through them. If the lifted points are linearly dependent, then the ECDLP is solved. Our purpose is to analyze the practicality of this algorithm. We find that asymptotically the algorithm is virtually certain to fail, because of an absolute bound on the size of the coefficients of a relation satisfied by the lifted points. Moreover, even for smaller values of p experiments show that the odds against finding a suitable lifting are prohibitively high.

Notes: Abstract Using data taken with the multi-channel magnetograph at KPNO, we demonstrate that plage regions surrounding a sunspot have thermal properties found in the photospheric network. These network-like regions existed up to the edge of the penumbra of the sunspot. Temperature gradients inferred from equivalent width fluctuations in our data do not conflict with the requirements of the theory (Parker, 1978) for flux tubes to exist at subphotospheric levels.

Notes: Abstract The mutant of baker's yeast cytochrome c peroxidase-CN with Ala82 in place of Asn82, [N82A]CcPCN, exhibits a complex solution behavior featuring dynamic interconversion among three enzyme forms that so far have only been detected by NMR spectroscopy. Proton NMR studies of [N82A]CcPCN reveal resonances from each of the three enzyme forms and show that the interconversion among forms is controlled by the pH, temperature, and isotope composition (H2O vs. D2O) of the buffer solution. No evidence for a key hydrogen bond between His52 and heme-coordinated cyanide is found in any of the enzyme forms, indicating that disruption of the extensive distal hydrogen bonding network is the source of this phenomenon.

Description / Table of Contents: On BaCdGeS4 and the Crystal Chemistry of the BaABS4-Type CompoundsBaCdGeS4 was prepared for the first time and investigated by using X-ray methods. It crystallizes isotypically with BaCdSnS4 [1]. Space group C2v19-Fdd2 (No. 43). Lattice constants: a = 2169, b = 2125, c = 1278 pm. The structure is formed by the characteristically linked edge sharing “double-tetrahedrons”. The topological linkage of the tetrahedrons is compared with other related structures and discussed in respect of the nature of the metal-sulfur bond.
Notes: BaCdGeS4 wurde erstmals dargestellt und röntgenographisch untersucht. Es kristallisiert isotyp mit BaCdSnS4 [1] in der Raumgruppe C2v19-Fdd2 (Nr. 43). Gitterkonstanten: a = 2169, b = 2125, c = 1278 pm.

Description / Table of Contents: Determination of the Phase Width of Zinc OxideThe homogeneity range of zinc oxide was determined coulometrically by oxydation of non-stoichiometric samples in a gas-solid-phase-reaction using a solid electrolyte cell. Single crystals with the composition according to the lower phase boundary were prepared by chemical transport reaction. The deviation of the lower phase boundary from the stoichiometric composition depends upon the temperature amounting to 30-240 ppm in the region 800-1100°C.
