    Description: Data-Parallel Line Relaxation (DPLR) code is a computational fluid dynamic (CFD) solver that was developed at NASA Ames Research Center to help mission support teams generate high-value predictive solutions for hypersonic flow field problems. The DPLR Code Package is an MPI-based, parallel, full three-dimensional Navier-Stokes CFD solver with generalized models for finite-rate reaction kinetics, thermal and chemical non-equilibrium, accurate high-temperature transport coefficients, and ionized flow physics incorporated into the code. DPLR also includes a large selection of generalized realistic surface boundary conditions and links to enable loose coupling with external thermal protection system (TPS) material response and shock layer radiation codes.

    Description: We investigated the controls of hydrography and of scavenging on the distribution of the particle reactive radionuclides 231Pa and 230Th in the water column and in surface sediments off Southwest Africa (Angola and Cape basins). Based on a vertical section of total 230Thex concentrations in the water column we show that small differences in the salinity between the North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) in the Angola Basin and the NADW in the Cape Basin as well as the advection of NADW associated with the Namib Col Current are reflected in total 230Thex concentrations. These variable total concentrations are believed to reflect the flow path and mixing history of NADW with the NADW in the Angola Basin being relatively older and 230Th enriched compared to the NADW in the Cape Basin. In the area investigated we found high 231Paex/230Thex ratios (231Paex/230Thex 〉 0.093) in surface sediments at the continental margin and lower ones (231Paex/230Thex 〈 0.093) in the open ocean. Such a distribution is normally interpreted to result from high particle flux at ocean margins (boundary scavenging). However, the lack of any significant depletion of dissolved 230Th and 231Pa in the water column does not indicate extensive scavenging at the continental margin. High 231Paex/230Thex ratios are constrained to shallow waters depths (〈 2000 m) only and coincide with low fractionation between 231Pa and 230Th indicating that preferential scavenging of 231Pa on opal may have caused high 231Paex/230Thex ratios in the sediments. The observed close negative correlation (r2 = 0.82) between 231Paex/230Thex ratios in sediments and water depths is believed to reflect changes in the particle composition, i.e. a decrease in opal content with water depth. In the Angola and Cape basins the total 231Paex concentrations in NADW were the highest observed so far in the Atlantic Ocean, and they are attributed to the meridional export of 231Pa from the North Atlantic. This caused the average dissolved 231Pa/230Th in the Southeast Atlantic to be about a factor 2 higher when compared to the North Atlantic (Labrador Sea). These differences in the dissolved 231Pa/230Th were not reflected in 231Pa/230Th ratios of surface sediments because the fractionation is lower in the Labrador Sea compared to the Southeast Atlantic, i.e. fractionation counteracts changes in the dissolved 231Pa/230Th. This suggests that fractionation is more important for the determination of 231Paex/230Thex ratios in sediments than the meridional export of 231Pa from the North Atlantic.

    Description: Deep-water corals are widespread in the North Atlantic. Colonial azooxanthellate scleractinians sustain ecosystems mostly in the bathyal zone down the slopes and oceanic banks off the Iberian Peninsula to as far north as the Scandinavian shelf off northern Norway. Estimates of the geological age of 37 deepwater corals exposed at the seabed from major reef areas in the North Atlantic were based on U/Th datings. In contrast to the purely Holocene ages of deep-water corals in Scandinavian waters, the Faroe area and the Rockall Trough, deep-water corals from lower latitudes like the seamounts off NW-Africa, the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and the western Mediterranean Sea seemed to have grown continuously over the last 50 ka. Overall, deep-water corals showed U/Th ages between 0.09 and 53.5 ka.

    Description: We present time series of export productivity proxy data including 230Thex-normalized deposition rates (rain rates) of 10Be, dissolution-corrected biogenic Ba, and biogenic opal as well as authigenic U concentrations which are complemented by rain rates of total (detrital) Fe and sea ice indicating diatom abundances from five sediment cores across the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean covering the past 150,000 years. The results suggest that 10Be rain rates and authigenic U concentration cannot serve as quantitative paleoproductivity proxies because they have also been influenced by detrital particle fluxes in the case of 10Be and bulk sedimentation rates (sediment focussing) and deep water oxygenation in the case of U. The combined results of the remaining productivity proxies of this study (rain rates of biogenic opal and biogenic Ba in those sections without authigenic U) and other previously published proxy data from the Southern Ocean (231Pa/230Th and nitrogen isotopes) suggest that a combination of sea ice cover, shallow remineralization depth, and stratification of the glacial water column south of the present position of the Antarctic Polar Front and possibly Fe fertilization north of it have been the main controlling factors of export paleoproductivity in the Southern Ocean over the last 150,000 years. An overall glacial increase of export paleoproductivity is not supported by the data, implying that bioproductivity variations in the Southern Ocean are unlikely to have contributed to the major glacial atmospheric CO2 drawdown observed in ice cores.

    Description: Ecosystems damaged by distal volcanic ash and sulfur deposition usually recover within decades. However, sediment, stalagmite, and pollen records from the southernmost Andes indicate a 2000 yr impact on forest and aquatic ecosystems after deposition of a thin tephra layer. SO2 released from altering pumice produced intense soil and lake acidification in a 〉150,000 km2 area. Acidification led to nutrient leaching and affected soil microorganisms, causing plant decay and increased soil erosion in an area larger than 8000 km2. We conclude that weakly buffered soils in humid environments are extremely vulnerable to volcanic and anthropogenic acidification, causing long-lasting ecosystem damage and perturbations of paleoclimate proxy records.

    Description: We investigated the influence of the composition of the vertical particle flux on the removal of particle reactive natural radionuclides (Th-230 and Pa-231) from the water column to the sediments. Radionuclide concentrations determined in sediment traps moored in the western, central and eastern Arabian Sea were related to the major components (carbonate, particulate organic matter (POC), opal, lithogenic material) of the particle flux. These data were combined with sediment trap data previously published from the Southern Ocean, Equatorial Pacific and North Atlantic [Z. Chase, R.F. Anderson, M.Q. Fleisher, P.W. Kubik, The influence of particle composition and particle flux on scavenging of Th, Pa and Be in the ocean, Earth Planet. Sci. Lett. 204 (2002) 215-229; J.C. Scholten, F. Fietzke, S. Vogler, M. Rutgers van der Loeff, A. Mangini, W Koeve, J. Waniek. P. Stoffers, A. Antia, J. Kass, Trapping efficiencies of sediment traps from the deep eastern North Atlantic: The Th-230 calibration, Deep Sea Research 1148 (2001) 2383-2408]. The correlations observed between the particle-dissolved distribution coefficients (K-d) of Th-230 and Pa-231 and the concentrations of the particle types depend on the sediment trap data set used. This result suggests that scavenging affinities of the nuclides differ between oceanic regions. Several factors (K-d values, reactive surface areas of particles, inter-correlations in closed data set) can, however, influence the observed relationships and thus hamper the interpretation of these correlation coefficients as a measure of relative scavenging affinities of the nuclides to the particle types investigated. The mean fractionation factor (F(Pa/Th)=K-d(Pa)/(K)d(Th)) from the Equatorial Pacific (F=0.11+/-0.03) is similar to that from the North Atlantic (F(Pa/Th)=0.077+/-0.026), and both are lower than the factors from the Arabian Sea (F(Pa/Th)=0.35+/-0.12) and from the Southern Ocean (F(Pa/Th) 0.87+/-0.4). For opal concentrations exceeding similar to60%, an increase in the fractionation factors is observed causing a higher mean fractionation factor for the Southern Ocean trap data set. For the other areas investigated, differences in the mean fractionation factors cannot be related to the particles types considered. In the Arabian Sea, seasonally variable Pa-231(ex)/Th-230(ex) ratios observed in the sediment traps as well as differences of the ratios between recently deposited phytodetritus (fluff) and normal surface sediments indicate seasonal changes in scavenging processes which the generally accepted reversible scavenging models do not envisage. We assume that variable sinking rates of particles, and/or particles not considered in this study (e.g. colloids, manganese oxides, transparent exopolymer particles) may play an important but as yet unexplored role in deep-water scavenging processes.     Description: We present the first transect of dissolved 10Be depth profiles across the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) in the Atlantic sector. North of the Polar Front the 10Be concentrations increase continuously from very low values at the surface to values of up to 1600 atoms/g at depth. Deep water 10Be concentrations of particular water masses are consistent with earlier results obtained further north. South of the Polar Front and in the Weddell Sea the distribution of 10Be is also characterised by low surface concentrations but below 1000 m depth the concentrations are relatively constant and significantly higher (up to 2000 atoms/g) than further north, probably as a result of mixing and advection of water masses of Pacific origin. Overall the deep water 10Be distribution is obviously not significantly affected by scavenging processes or ice melt and comparison with the density distribution suggests that 10Be can be viewed as a quasi-conservative tracer. This provides a tool for an improved understanding of the behaviour of other more particle reactive trace metals in the Southern Ocean such as 230Th: in deep waters north of the ACC/Weddell Gyre boundary (AWB) 10Be/230Th has a relatively constant value (1.7±0.3×109 atoms/dpm) over a wide density range whereas south of the AWB the ratio is significantly lower (1.1±0.2×109 atoms/dpm). This normalisation to 10Be corroborates that 230Th is enriched by 50% due to accumulation south of the AWB as a consequence of minimal particulate fluxes. The quasi-conservative behaviour deduced from our results also implies that 10Be can only be used as a tracer for Southern Ocean particle fluxes in the past if ocean circulation patterns and water mass residence times did not change significantly.

    Description: Bottom-tethered sediment traps deployed in the deep eastern North Atlantic between 54°N 20°W and 33°N 20°W (L1, L2, L3), at the European continental margin at 49°N (OMEX) and off the Canary Islands (ESTOC) were investigated for the determination of 230Th trapping efficiencies. The ratios of 230Th flux measured in the traps (Fa) to the expected 230Th flux from the production rate of 230Th in the overlying water column (Fp) ranged between 0.09 and 1.26. For the traps with deployment periods 〉300 days the interannual variation of Fa/Fp ratios (different years but same location and water depth) were up to 10%, suggesting that the average 230Th flux to the sediment traps did not vary significantly. The influence of lateral advection on the 230Th flux was taken into account either by applying a mass balance of 230Th and 231Pa or by assuming a constant removal rate of 230Th from the water column, an assumption based on similar 230Th concentration-depth profiles observed at most locations investigated. 230Th trapping efficiencies were between 9 and 143%, showing a trend of increasing efficiencies with increasing water depth. No relation was found between current velocities and 230Th trapping efficiencies. Our investigations suggest that the observation of constant or even increasing particle flux rates with increasing water depths in several sediment trap arrays investigated may be a result of sediment trap biases. The correction for the trapping biases is important for the understanding of the regional differences in the particle flux in the eastern North Atlantic.
