    Notes: TiO2—a prototype ceramic—was decrystallized in a 2.45 GHz AC magnetic field in a single mode TE103 applicator. The titania powders were synthesized by a sol–gel process and pressed into circular pellets. The pellets were very slightly reduced at 1273 K in a reducing atmosphere. The reduced pellets were introduced into the single mode microwave cavity and placed at the magnetic field maximum node and exposed for 10–30 s in a forming gas atmosphere. The reacted samples were then characterized by XRD, SEM, Raman, and TEM. The data presented in this note demonstrate that a very short treatment in the AC magnetic field at 2.45 GHz can transform rutile structure oxides to a noncrystalline state.

    Notes: Abstract Ca1-x Sr x Zr4P6O24 (O ⩽ × ⩽ 1.0) system which belongs to a new large family of low thermal expansion materials known as NZP or CTP, was synthesized by the solid state and the sol-gel methods. The conventional sol-gel method was modified by introducing a seeding step which resulted in significant improvement in the sintering characteristics and the microstructure of the sintered material. Sintering data were compared with those obtained by the powder mixing technique. Thermal expansion of the sintered samples was measured by classical dilatometry and by high-temperature X-ray diffractometry. It was found that CaZr4P6O24 (x= 0) and SrZr4P6O24 (x= 1) phases had opposite anisotropies in their respective axial thermal expansions. This behaviour led to the development of a crystalline solution composition of nearly zero expansion characteristic. Microstructures of the sintered specimens were examined by scanning electron microscopy.

    Notes: Abstract Single-crystal fibres of modified strontium aluminium tantalum oxide (1-x)Sr(Al1/2Ta1/2) O3·xLaAlO3(SAT-LA) and (1-x)Sr(Al1/2Ta1/2)O3·xNdGaO3 (SAT·NG), and modified strontium aluminum niobium oxide (1-x)Sr(Al1/2Nb1/2)O3·xNdGaO3(SAT·NG) and (1-x)Sr (Al1/2Nb1/2)O3·xLaAlO3 (SAN·LA) were grown using a laser-heated pedestal growth technique. 0.7SAT·0.3LA grows congruently and retains a twin free simple cubic perovskite structure (as the SAT) when cooled down to room temperature. 0.7SAT·0.3LA crystals have a moderate dielectric constant (κ = 21.7) and low dielectric loss (tan δ = 7.5 × 10−5) at 10 kHz and 90 K. The reduction problem of Ta5+ is eliminated (which is common in the case of SAT growth). 0.7SAT·0.3NG and 0.7SAN·0.3NG have lower melting temperatures and crystal growth is easier. NdGaO3 addition to the SAT and SAN enhances the potential of SAT and SAN as large-area substrates for high-T c superconductor growth. However, the dielectric constants increased from κ∼-12 to κ∼-16(0.7SAT·0.3NG) and from κ∼18 to κ∼23 (0.7SAN·0.3NG) as a result of NdGaO3 incorporation.
