    Notes: Abstract Repetition of the work ofSugino andTamaka 1 showed that acrylonitrile and guanidine react inDMF to yield not only 3,4,6,7-tetrahydro-2H-pyrimido[1,2—a]pyrimidine-2,8(1H)-diimine (1), but a mixture (F) of1 (as a main product) and 2-amino-4-imino-1,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidine-1-propionitrile (7) besides one or two bases not identified so far.1 and7 were isolated as picrates. For the prove of their structures,1- and7-picrate were also prepared by an unequivocal synthesis starting from iminodipropionitrile hydrochloride8 · HCl: The latter on reaction with cyanamide gave9 which cyclized to afford a mixture of1,7 and 2-amino-4-oxo-1,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidine-1-propionitrile (10). The picrates of1 and7 were identical with those prepared from the acrylonitrileguanidine-condensateF. This result supports the prior proposed1 structures of pyrimidopyrimidine1 and of4,5 and6, obtained by hydrolysis of1. Nmr-, ir-and some of the mass spectra of1,4,7–10 (and their salts) are reported.

    Notes: The evolution and structure of graphene layers on 4H-SiC(0001) and the correspondinginterface are investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and low energy electron diffraction(LEED). The surface is characterized by the so-called (6p3£6p3)R30± reconstruction, whosestructural properties are still unclear but at the same time are crucial for the controlled growth ofhomogeneous high-quality large-terrace graphene surfaces. We analyse the properties of three phasesin this reconstruction with periodicities (6p3£6p3)R30±, (6£6) and (5£5). Their LEED intensitiesstrongly depend on the surface preparation procedure applied. The graphitization process imprintsdistinct features in the STM images as well as in the LEED spectra. An easy and practicable determinationof the number of graphene layers is outlined by means of LEED intensities

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Der Eiablagerhythmus von Laspeyresia pomonella (L.) wird von Licht-Dunkel-Zyklen gesteuert und läuft frei im Dauerlicht mit einer Periode τ=25.9 St. und im Dauerdunkel mit τ=21.8 St. Im Labor sowie unter natürlichen Bedingungen lag der 50%-Punkt der täglichen Eiablage jeweils 2.5 St. vor dem Beginn der Dunkelheit. Der Apfelwickler kann sich rasch an ein verändertes Lichtregime anpassen. Nach mehreren Tagen Freilauf im Dauerlicht synchronisierte sich der Eiablagerhythmus innerhalb von 48 St. mit einem normalen Licht-Dunkel-Zyklus.
    Notes: Abstract The oviposition rhythm in Laspeyresia pomonella (L.) is entrained by light-dark cycles and freeruns in continuous light with a period τ=25.9 hr and in continuous darkness with τ=21.8 hr. In the laboratory as well as in the field, the median of oviposition occurs on average 2.5 hr before the onset of darkness. The codling moth can adapt quickly to a new light regime. Oviposition was resynchronized with a normal light-dark cycle within 48 hr after freerunning for several days in continuous light.

    Notes: The miscibility of polymer blends is related to the polymer-polymer interaction parameter χ23, Several methods can be used to evaluate this parameter and five of the most important ones are reviewed: two equilibrium methods (melting-point depression and vapor sorption), a transport method (inverse-phase gas chromatography) and two scattering methods (neutron scattering and small-angle x-ray scattering). Examples are cited where χ23 values for a given blend were determined by several of these methods. This comparison leads to the conclusion that a reasonable agreement is often reached despite conceptual differences between the methods involved.

    Description: East Africa is a global biodiversity hotspot and exhibits distinct longitudinal diversity gradients from west to east in freshwater fishes and forest mammals. The assembly of this exceptional biodiversity and the drivers behind diversity gradients remain poorly understood, with diversification often studied at local scales and less attention paid to biotic exchange between Afrotropical regions. Here, we reconstruct a river system that existed for several millennia along the now semiarid Kenya Rift Valley during the humid early Holocene and show how this river system influenced postglacial dispersal of fishes and mammals due to its dual role as a dispersal corridor and barrier. Using geomorphological, geochronological, isotopic, and fossil analyses and a synthesis of radiocarbon dates, we find that the overflow of Kenyan rift lakes between 12 and 8 ka before present formed a bidirectional river system consisting of a “Northern River” connected to the Nile Basin and a “Southern River,” a closed basin. The drainage divide between these rivers represented the only viable terrestrial dispersal corridor across the rift. The degree and duration of past hydrological connectivity between adjacent river basins determined spatial diversity gradients for East African fishes. Our reconstruction explains the isolated distribution of Nilotic fish species in modern Kenyan rift lakes, Guineo-Congolian mammal species in forests east of the Kenya Rift, and recent incipient vertebrate speciation and local endemism in this region. Climate-driven rearrangements of drainage networks unrelated to tectonic activity contributed significantly to the assembly of species diversity and modern faunas in the East African biodiversity hotspot.
