    Description: The recent sharp drop in the cost of photovoltaic (PV) electricity generation accompanied by globally rapidly increasing investment in PV plants calls for new planning and management tools for large-scale distributed solar networks. Of major importance are methods to overcome intermittency of solar electricity, i.e., to provide dispatchable electricity at minimal costs. We find that pairs of electricity generation capacity G and storage S that give dispatchable electricity and are minimal with respect to S for a given G exhibit a smooth relationship of mutual substitutability between G and S. These isolines between G and S support the solving of several tasks, including the optimal sizing of generation capacity and storage, optimal siting of solar parks, optimal connections of solar parks across time zones for minimizing intermittency, and management of storage in situations of far below average insolation to provide dispatchable electricity. G−S isolines allow determining the cost-optimal pair (G,S) as a function of the cost ratio of G and S. G−S isolines provide a method for evaluating the effect of geographic spread and time zone coverage on costs of solar electricity.

    Description: Along with increasing oceanic CO2 concentrations, enhanced stratification constrains phytoplankton to shallower upper mixed layers with altered light regimes and nutrient concentrations. Here, we investigate the effects of elevated pCO2 in combination with light or nitrogen-limitation on 13C fractionation (epsilon p) in four dinoflagellate species. We cultured Gonyaulax spinifera and Protoceratium reticulatum in dilute batches under low-light (LL) and high-light (HL) conditions, and grew Alexandrium fundyense and Scrippsiella trochoidea in nitrogen-limited continuous cultures (LN) and nitrogen-replete batches (HN). The observed CO2-dependency of epsilon p remained unaffected by the availability of light for both G. spinifera and P. reticulatum, though at HL epsilon p was consistently lower by about 2.7 per mil over the tested CO2 range for P. reticulatum. This may reflect increased uptake of (13C-enriched) bicarbonate fueled by increased ATP production under HL conditions. The observed CO2-dependency of epsilon p disappeared under LN conditions in both A. fundyense and S. trochoidea. The generally higher epsilon p under LN may be associated with lower organic carbon production rates and/or higher ATP:NADPH ratios. CO2-dependent epsilon p under non-limiting conditions has been observed in several dinoflagellate species, showing potential for a new CO2-proxy. Our results however demonstrate that light- and nitrogen-limitation also affect epsilon p, thereby illustrating the need to carefully consider prevailing environmental conditions.

    Description: After a comprehensive geophysical prospecting the Quaternary Mýtina Maar, located on a line between the two Quaternary scoria cones Komorní hůrka/Kammerbühl and Železná hůrka/Eisenbühl, could be revealed by a scientific drilling at the German–Czech border in 2007. Further geophysical field investigations led to the discovery of another geological structure about 2.5 km ESE of the small town Neualbenreuth (NE-Bavaria, Germany), inferred to be also a maar structure, being the fourth volcanic feature aligned along the NW–SE trending Tachov fault zone. It is only faintly indicated as a partial circular rim in the digital elevation model. Though not expressed by a clear magnetic anomaly, geoelectric and refraction seismic tomography strongly indicates a bowl-shaped depression filled with low-resistivity and low-velocity material, correlating well with the well-defined negative gravity anomaly of − 2.5 mGal. Below ca. 15 m-thick debris layer, successions of mostly laminated sediments were recovered in a 100 m-long sediment core in 2015. Sections of finely laminated layers, likely varves, rich in organic matter and tree pollen, were recognized in the upper (22–30 m) and lower (70–86 m) part of the core, respectively, interpreted as interglacials, whereas mostly minerogenic laminated deposits, poor in organic matter, and (almost) barren of tree pollen are interpreted as clastic glacial deposits. According to a preliminary age model based on magnetostratigraphy, palynology, radiocarbon dating, and cyclostratigraphy, the recovered sediments span the time window from about 85 ka back to about 270 ka, covering marine isotope stages 5–8. Sedimentation rates are in the range of 10 cm ka−1 in interglacials and up to 100 cm ka−1 in glacial phases. The stratigraphic record resembles the one from Mýtina Maar, with its eruption date being derived from a nearby tephra deposit at 288 ± 17 ka, thus supporting the age model of the inferred Neualbenreuth Maar.

    Description: Anthropogenically caused emissions of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide have led to the phenomena of Global Warming and Ocean Acidification (OA). As a result, the Arctic haptophyte Phaeocystis pouchetii will encounter elevated seawater CO2 concentrations, temperatures and irradiances as well as lower seawater pH and nutrient availability. P. pouchetii is one of the major bloom forming primary producers in the Arctic and as such of crucial importance for the Arctic ecosystem and the ocean’s carbon cycle by contributing to the process of the biological carbon pump. Aim of this study is to investigate the uncoupled effects of OA and elevated light on the physiological performance of the alga. Therefore, P. pouchetii was cultured in a matrix of 400 (present day) and 1000 μatm (OA) partial pressure of CO2 and 50 (low light: LL) and 100 μmol photons m-2 s-1 (high light: HL) light. The impact of the environmental drivers was investigated on phenomenology (growth, chlorophyll a content, particulate organic carbon and nitrogen quotas and production rates) as well as on basis of in vivo physiology (relative electron transport, net photosynthesis, respiration and CO2 uptake) using Fast Repetition Rate Fluorometry and Membrane-Inlet Mass Spectrometry. In addition, SYBR-green based Quantitative Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction was applied to assess the transcriptomic responses of the subunits A of photosystem I and the large subunit of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase towards OA and HL. This study revealed that P. pouchetii`s photosynthesis in general profits slightly from a shift in the ambient light from 50 to 100 μmol photons m-2 s-1 and especially profits slightly from a synergistic effect of HL and OA. Attributed to the improved photosynthesis, increased particulate organic carbon and nitrogen quotas and production rates were found manifested. For the very first time, this study provides a comprehensive dataset on the physiology of the important but under-investigated species P. pouchetii and reveled that this alga will most likely belong to the winners of Global Change.

    Description: Typhoons are a common feature of summer and autumn months in the East China Sea. These events often promote phytoplankton growth in surface waters as a result of upwelling and transport of nutrients, but their effects on sub-surface waters and ecosystems are little known. Furthermore, biological studies tend to focus on phytoplankton (using chlorophyll a assays), rather than on heterotrophic zooplankton. Indeed, measurements of biological and physicochemical changes induced by the storms are difficult to perform and risky, using standard shipboard sampling techniques. Using a camera mounted on an underwater, cabled observatory system in shallow coastal waters of Okinawa, Japan, we collected the first continuous, in-situ observations of the near-bottom, mesoplankton community during a series of typhoons. An increase in diatoms and radiolarians was found during all typhoons, whereas the response of larger zooplankton groups was variable between typhoons. A bloom of Trichodesmium cyanobacteria and diatoms was seen after a series of typhoons, while the total chlorophyll a concentration remained nearly unchanged at the sampling location. These findings shed new light on short-term responses of sub-surface ecosystems during typhoons.
