Description: Four hundred and twenty kilograms of manganese nodules were recovered at Station U205 in the Tasman Sea. They were sorted by size class. Representative subsets for each size class were chemically analysed and their avearge composition is presented in the published table. Samples were alaysed by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. For this purpose, samples were ground to 80 mesh, dried at 105°C for at least 24 hours and fused with "Spectromelt A 12" (Merck 11802, containing 66% lithium tetraborate and 34% lithium metaborate). To prepare glass beads, 1 g of Mn nodule materail was mixed with 1 g of flux and heated in a RF-furnace for about 5 minutes.

Description: Manganese nodules from VA13/2 cruise (R/V Valdivia) were selected for a variety of morphologies and size. They were regrouped by size class and chemically analyzed in bulk. Mn, Fe, Ni, and Cu concentrations were determined by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy following grinding and drying of the samples at 1l0°C for 24 hr. The elements Co, Zn, Al, Si, and Ba were analyzed in selected samples by atomic absorption spectrophotometry in Aachen. In addition, the percent lithogenous fraction of selected samples was determined following treatment of the sample by 25 percent HCl. Element composition in these nodules was then computed on a lithogenous-free basis to make allowance for the effects of variation in the silicate contents of the nodules.

Description: Manganese nodules were retrieved during the SO06 (R/V Sonne) and COPANO (R/V Le Suroit) campaigns as part of the international "Hawaii-Tahiti Transect Program" initiated at the CCOP/SOPAC-IOC/IDOE International workshop on "Geology Mineral Resources and Geophysics of the South Pacific" in Suva, Fiji im September 1975. Their chemical composition was determined using X-ray fluorescence (XRF).

Description: Manganese nodules and crusts from stations of the SO06 expedition (R/V Sonne) in the Aitutaki Passage have been selected for chemical analysis. Mn, Fe, Ni and Cu were analyzed onboard ship by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry and selected samples were re-analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry in Aachen for calibration purposes. Co, Zn, Si and Al were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry on material dried at 105°C for 72 hrs and Ba and La by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy in Aachen. U was determined by the delayed neutron counting technique at the Riso National Laboratory, Denmark.
