    Abstract: This book provides an overview of the biology and biochemistry of peroxisomes, and discusses the contribution of these organelles to peroxisomal and neurodegenerative diseases. It begins with a detailed introduction to the biogenesis and metabolic functions of peroxisomes, and highlights their role in oxidative stress and in lipid metabolism such as fatty acid oxidation. The following chapters focus on the molecular and clinical aspects of peroxisomal disorders caused by defects in peroxisomal function. In particular, the biological aspects of peroxisomal biogenesis disorders such as Zellweger syndrome and Heimler syndrome are discussed. This includes their underlying genetic causes as well as the biochemical and metabolic defects associated with the disorders. In addition, several chapters cover recent observations suggesting an association between peroxisomal dysfunction and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, Multiple Sclerosis and other degenerative cerebellar pathologies. The final section of the book discusses important cell and animal models for studying the role of peroxisomes in human diseases and presents current therapeutic strategies for their treatment. This book deals with a highly topical subject that is at the heart of current research, and represents a valuable contribution for all students and researchers who want to understand the complex biology of peroxisomes and their role in human diseases.

    Description: We use a Landscape Evolution Model including flexural isostasy to investigate the influence of inherited foreland relief on the stratigraphic evolution of the retro-foreland domain during mountain building. We show models with four different types of initial relief in the foreland domain: at sea level, elevated (+300 m), a 1 km-deep and 100 km-wide foreland basin associated with either a forebulge at sea level or elevated at +300 m. During the first 10 Myr of simulation, the landscape evolution of the foreland is significantly altered by its inherited bathymetry/topography. The impact is then smoothed out once the foreland slope has stabilized and develops a transverse drainage network. Models record a long-term shallowing-up mega-sequence driven by the increase in sediment production rate in the uplifting range and the decrease in the rate of flexural accommodation space creation in the foreland basin. The initial relief of the foreland domain alters the timing of its transition from the under-filled to the over-filled phase. An initially deep foreland basin is twice as thick as an initially elevated foreland. It records deep marine deposits while a foreland initially at sea level records thin shallow marine and an elevated foreland records continental deposits. The forebulge is buried by continental deposits in an initially elevated foreland while it is buried by marine sediments in other models. Alluvial fans at the foot of the range are more elevated in initially elevated forelands. We discuss our results of modeled stratigraphic architecture in comparison with the Pyrenean, Alpine and Andean retro-foreland basins.

    Description: The Changing-Atmosphere Infra-Red Tomography Explorer (CAIRT) is one of the four candidates for ESA’s Earth Explorer 11. This mission has been proposed in order to achieve a step change in our understanding of the coupling of atmospheric circulation, composition and climate. The CAIRT concept proposes to perform limb tomography of the atmosphere from the troposphere to the lower thermosphere (about 5 to 115 km altitude) with a swath between 300 and 500 km and high spatial and spectral resolution to provide a three-dimensional picture of atmospheric structure at unprecedented scales. This contribution will investigate the capability of CAIRT to analyse stratosphere to troposphere exchange using an Observing System Simulation Experiment (OSSE). In this effort, a reference atmosphere – the nature run in the OSSE terminology – is built based on the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Services (CAMS) control run (i.e. with a horizontal resolution ~40 km and a vertical resolution ~500 m in the tropopause region). The nature run is used to generate CAIRT ozone profiles, along with a CAIRT orbit simulator and a simulator to generate CAIRT ozone retrieval responses and error covariance matrix. Simulated CAIRT ozone profiles are then assimilated by the Belgian Assimilation System for Chemical ObsErvations (BASCOE) to provide ozone analyses – the assimilation run. In order to measure the added value of CAIRT data in the assimilation run, a BASCOE control run without CAIRT assimilation, is also done. Ozone fluxes across the tropopause are calculated from three numerical experiments which will be discussed in this presentation.

    Description: The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is a driving force of the heat redistribution on our planet and has a particularly large impact on the climate of the northern hemisphere and Europe. It has been projected since the 1980s that the anthropogenic atmospheric CO2-concentration rise will weaken the AMOC. Such a change in AMOC intensity would lead to a change in European climate and extreme weather events. Therefore, it becomes crucial to understand how the AMOC responds to climate change. Faith in the reliability of coupled model projections has been questioned due to a growing body of evidence that the multi-model mean of climate models disagrees with observational proxies for the AMOC, in particular in the mid-20th century. In turn, the reliability of these observational proxies has been questioned as they are not direct observations of the AMOC. In this study, we present an AMOC reconstruction based on a simple layered model of the deep branch of the AMOC, trained with modern RAPID array measurements at 26N, in order to compute the AMOC from historic hydrographic data from the EN4 database. Our aim is to provide, in the light of modern direct observations, an answer on the reliability of AMOC reconstructions and historical climate simulations during the mid-20th century.

Comment se former à des pratiques d'analyse permettant d'appréhender nos sociétés contemporaines, voire d'y conduire une action ? C'est à ce projet pédagogique que les ethnologues à l'origine de cet ouvrage se sont attachés, en élaborant des cycles de formation qui intègrent dans la réflexion et les débats la question des usages attendus de l'ethnologie. L'ouvrage reprend - en le recomposant - ce travail d'explicitation de la démarche ethnologique. Après une analyse de la singularité intellectuelle d'une ethnologie « chez l'autre », et un examen de la question des sources de la discipline dans nos sociétés, les auteurs abordent la question de l'interprétation, celle de la production du sens et donc du symbolique qui est au cœur des pratiques sociales.     Description: During the extended activity of Mount Etna volcano in February–April 2021, three distinct paroxysmal events took place from February 21 to 26, which were associated with a very uncommon transport of the injected upper-tropospheric plumes toward the north. Using a synergy of observations and modeling, we characterized the emissions and three-dimensional dispersion for these three plumes, monitored their downwind distribution and optical properties, and estimated their radiative impacts at selected locations. With a satellite-based source inversion, we estimate the emitted sulfur dioxide (SO2) mass at an integrated value of 55 kt and plumes injections at up to 12 km altitudes, which qualifies this series as an extreme event for Mount Etna. Then, we combine Lagrangian dispersion modeling, initialized with measured temporally resolved SO2 emission fluxes and altitudes, with satellite observations to track the dispersion of the three individual plumes. The transport toward the north allowed the height-resolved downwind monitoring of the plumes at selected observatories in France, Italy, and Israel, using LiDARs and photometric aerosol observations. Volcanic-specific aerosol optical depths (AODs) in the visible spectral range ranging from about 0.004 to 0.03 and local daily average shortwave radiative forcing (RF) ranging from about −0.2 to −1.2 W m −2 (at the top of atmosphere) and from about −0.2 to −3.0 W m −2 (at the surface) are found. The composition (possible presence of ash), AOD, and RF of the plume have a large inter-plume and intra-plume variability and thus depend strongly on the position of the sampled section of the plumes.

    Description: Heavy metals are naturally omnipresent in aquatic systems. Excess amounts of heavy metals can accumulate in organisms of pollution impacted systems and transfer across a food web. Analysing the food web structure and metal contents of the organisms can help unravel the pathways of biomagnification or biodilution and gain insight in trophic linkages. We measured heavy metals and other elements in mussel bank detritus and organisms of the Biesbosch reservoirs (the Netherlands) and linked those to stable isotopic signatures. The heavy metal contents (cadmium, copper, lead, and zinc) were often lowest in benthivorous, omnivorous and piscivorous species (mainly fish); whereas, phosphorus contents were lower in the autotrophs. Mussel bank detritus contained the highest amounts of heavy metals. The heavy metals were negatively correlated with \xce\xb415N values. For selenium no clear trend was observed. Furthermore, there was a negative correlation between fish length and some heavy metals. Based on all 20 analysed elemental contents, similarities between species became apparent, related to niche or habitat. This study confirms that elemental contents of species can differ between feeding guilds and/or species, which can be attributed to metabolic and physiological processes. The organisms in higher trophic levels have adaptations preventing metal accumulation, resulting in lower contents. Within the fish species biodilution occurs, as most metal contents were lowest in bigger fish. Overall, the metals did not seem to biomagnify, but biodilute in the food web. Metal analyses combined with isotopic signatures could thus provide insights in metal transfer and possible trophic linkages within a system.
