Beschreibung: A compact, portable and robust room temperature CH4 sensor is reported. By difference frequency mixing a 500 mW alpha-DFB diode laser at 1066 nm and an erbium-doped fiber amplified 1574 nm DFB diode laser in periodically poled lithium niobate up to 7 (mu)W of narrowband radiation at 3.3 microns is generated. Real-time monitoring of CH4 over a 7 day period using direct absorption in an open-path multipass cell (L = 36 m) demonstrates a detection precision of +/- 14 ppb.

Beschreibung: The implementation and application of a portable fiber-coupled trace-gas sensor for the detection of several trace gases, including CO2, CH4, and H2CO, are reported. This particular sensor is based on a cw fiber-amplified near-infrared (distributed Bragg reflector) diode laser and an external cavity diode laser that are frequency converted in a periodically poled lithium niobate crystal to the mid-IR spectroscopic fingerprint region (3.3-4.4 micrometers). A continuous absorption spectrum of CH4 and H2CO from 3.37 to 3.10 micrometers with a spectral resolution of 40 MHz (approximately 0.0013 cm-1) demonstrated the spectral performance that can be achieved by means of automated wavelength tuning and phase matching with stepper motor control. Autonomous long-term detection of ambient CO2 and CH4 over a 3- and 7-day period was also demonstrated.

Beschreibung: A Yb fiber laser pumped cw narrow-linewidth tunable mid-IR source based on a difference frequency generation (DFG) in a periodically poled LiNbO3 (PPLN) crystal for trace gas detection was demonstrated. A high power Yb fiber laser and a distributed feedback (DFB) laser diode were used as DFG pump sources. This source generated mid-IR at 3 microns with a powers of ~2.5 microW and a spectral linewidth of less than 30 MHz. A frequency tuning range of 300 GHz (10 cm-1) was obtained by varying the current and temperature of the DFB laser diode. A high-resolution NH3 absorption Doppler-broadened spectrum at 3295.4 cm-1 (3.0345 microns) was obtained at a cell pressure of 27 Pa from which a detection sensitivity of 24 ppm m was estimated.

Beschreibung: A portable modular gas sensor for measuring the 13C/12C isotopic ratio in CO2 with a precision of 0.8%(+/-1 sigma) was developed for volcanic gas emission studies. This sensor employed a difference frequency generation (DFG)-based spectroscopic source operating at 4.35 micrometers (approximately 2300 cm-1) in combination with a dual-chamber gas absorption cell. Direct absorption spectroscopy using this specially designed cell permitted rapid comparisons of isotopic ratios of a gas sample and a reference standard for appropriately selected CO2 absorption lines. Special attention was given to minimizing undesirable precision degrading effects, in particular temperature and pressure fluctuations.

Beschreibung: The development of compact spectroscopic gas sensors and their applications to environmental sensing will be described. These sensors employ mid-infrared difference-frequency generation (DFG) in periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) crystals pumped by two single-frequency solid state lasers such as diode lasers, diode-pumped solid state, and fiber lasers. Ultrasensitive, highly selective, and real-time measurements of several important atmospheric trace gases, including carbon monoxide, nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide, formaldehyde [correction of formaldehye], and methane, have been demonstrated.

Beschreibung: Two small annually laminated stalagmites from Zoolithencave (southeastern Germany) grew between CE 1821 and 1970 (Zoo‐rez‐1) and CE 1835 and 1970 (Zoo‐rez‐2), respectively. Trace element concentrations were determined by Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA‐ICP‐MS). Samples for δ13C and δ18O analyses were micromilled on annual and subannual resolution. Soil and host rock samples were analyzed by X‐Ray Diffraction (XRD) and their elemental concentrations determined via inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP‐OES). Trace element concentrations in the stalagmites show two groups in the principal component analyses: one with Mg, Ba, and Sr and another with Y, P, and Al, respectively. The second group reflects the content of detrital material. Increased weathering of soil minerals seems to have a strong influence on the silicate/carbonate weathering ratio controlling the variability of Mg, Ba, and Sr. Meteorological and Global Network of Isotopes in Precipitation (GNIP) station data were used to calculate the δ18O values of the drip water (infiltration‐weighted, mean annual, and the mean of the winter precipitation δ18O values) as well as the corresponding speleothem calcite. The δ18O values calculated by the infiltration‐weighted model show similar patterns and amplitudes as the measured δ18O values of the two stalagmites. This suggests that the δ18O values of speleothem calcite reflect the δ18O values of infiltration‐weighted annual precipitation, which zis related to mean annual temperature, resulting in a significant correlation between mean annual temperature and the measured δ18O values of stalagmite Zoo‐rez‐2. This relationship could potentially be used for quantitative climate reconstruction in the future by extending the time series back in time with further stalagmites from Zoolithencave.
