    Beschreibung: The disappearance of larger individuals and the decrease in individual body condition suffered by Atlantic cod Gadus morhua in the eastern Baltic during the past two decades can be expected to affect the stock reproductive output. To investigate this, female G. morhua were collected during the spawning and pre-spawning period in 2015-2016. The current individual potential fecundity (FP) of eastern Baltic G. morhua was estimated and analysed in relation to total length (LT) and indices of nutritional status such as body condition (K) and hepato-somatic index (IH) using generalized linear models. In addition, the current prevalence of atresia and its potential relation to K were investigated. Moreover, a calibration curve to estimate FP from oocyte diameter, based on the autodiametric oocyte counting method, was established for the first time for eastern Baltic G. morhua and can be used for future fecundity studies on this stock. The results showed that FP was mainly positively related to fish length, but K and IH also contributed significantly to the variation in FP. The model predicted that fish with K=1·2 have a FP 51% higher than fish of the same LT with K=0·8. The prevalence of fecundity regulation by atresia was 5·8%, but it was found only in fish in the pre-spawning maturity stage and with low K. Temporal changes in biological features such as the length composition and individual body condition of eastern Baltic G. morhua, should be accounted for when estimating stock reproductive potential.

    Beschreibung: The overall aim of my thesis was to improve our understanding of environmental drivers causing the dynamics of the Eastern Baltic cod reproduction habitat and to assess their relevance for a possible application in the sustainable stock management. A novel approach to map the reproductive habitat of Eastern Baltic cod, the Buoyancy Depending Reproductive Layers (BDRL), was developed and used to propose an alternative stock indicator, the effective Spawning Stock Biomass (eSSB). The eSSB was found to improve the fit of a recruitment model compared to the model using the conventional Spawning Stock Biomass. Oxygen depletion was also negatively impacting the available size of nursery areas for juveniles. The mechanism was able to partly explain the observed decline of the condition of juveniles in the nursery areas, because a high population density in the remaining habitat could increase the impact of density depending effects. Furthermore, by the application of the novel approach of BDRLs the spawning habitat was shown to be sensitive to eutrophication and that this sensitivity is strongly depending on the size of the female spawner using the habitat. As predicted, the BDRL approach was superior to the “classic” approach, the Reproductive Volume (RV) because it was more sensitive to environmental change, able to incorporate stock structure, was not overestimating the spawning habitat in the eastern spawning areas and could provide estimates of other stressors depending on the female spawner size. Due to a permanently installed measurement platform in the Arkona Basin, the new methodology could be used to establish a new environmental indicator on the spawning habitat conditions. It was recommended to be used in future stock assessments.

    Beschreibung: The period of larval drift into a suitable nursery area is considered to be of great significance for recruitment variability in flatfish. Here, a hydrodynamic model coupled with a Lagrangian particle tracking technique was utilized to study the drift from the first feeding larval stage until time of settlement of Central and Eastern Baltic flounder (Platichthys flesus), originating from spawning in the Baltic Sea deep basins, the Arkona- and Bornholm basin (central Baltic Sea), and the Gdansk deep and Gotland basin (eastern Baltic Sea). We examined the spatio-temporal dynamics of the probability to settle in preferred nursery habitat by detailed drift model simulations. The study suggests that the majority of larvae (89% and 74% for Central- and Eastern Baltic flounder, respectively) drift towards coastal areas and settle at metamorphosis ≤20 km from a sandy habitat enabling further migration to a preferred nursery area, i.e. larval drift seems not to be a major bottleneck in recruitment of flounder spawning in the Baltic Sea deep basins. The drift model results suggest that Central Baltic flounder utilize nursery areas mainly in the central and western Baltic, and in the Kattegat, whereas Eastern Baltic flounder mainly utilize the coast in the central and eastern Baltic. Thus, the two stock components seem to use different nursery areas following settlement. Further, in accordance with the “nursery size hypothesis”, the model demonstrates that larvae from the Bornholm basin, utilizing areas with extensive distribution of preferred nursery habitat, display the highest relative successful transport to nursery grounds until settling (72% of successfully settled larvae), suggesting that spawning in the Bornholm Basin is of great importance for stock recruitment of deep basin spawning Baltic flounder.

We here provided decadally, regionally, and depth layer resolved information on connectivity and dispersal patterns for the entire Baltic Sea as a tool for supporting population genetic and ecological studies. The general method to assess dispersal used was bio-physical modelling, which is suitable for biological dispersal that is highly influenced by the physical water transport in ocean circulation. The results were assessed from Lagrangian particle tracking using ocean circulation model outputs. Generally, for the whole Baltic Sea as well as for all subareas, we observed persistent patterns of dispersal that reflected the basin-like structure of the Baltic Sea, with less transport between the basins. At the same time, dispersal distance and in extension, local retention versus dispersal of particles to other sub-areas, varied considerably over four decades (1970–2010) and among regions within the Baltic Sea, corresponding to a range from high connectivity to partial dispersal barriers. Based on the example of Eastern Baltic cod we then investigated how our dispersal distance datasets can serve as a tool to assess dispersal and the expected connectivity among different populations of a species, as long as some biological information is available. For example, our finding of high dispersal of particles from the Bornholm Basin to the other Eastern Baltic basins could help to explain recent results indicating lack of genetic differentiation of cod across the eastern Baltic Sea. Our results also indicate that the shift in spawning time observed in cod over the past decades and the resulting exposure of eggs and larvae in the water column to a time of the year with a different current regime has likely affected egg and larval export. Finally, our case study also demonstrates how inter-annual variability of ocean current speed and direction at the time of peak reproduction is likely to affect the connectivity among the subareas in the Baltic. To conclude, connectivity datasets from this study are freely available, and can represent a powerful tool to apply in evolutionary and ecological studies of a variety of species in the Baltic Sea.

    Beschreibung: The semi-enclosed nature and estuarine characteristics, together with its strongly alternating bathymetry, make the Baltic Sea prone to much stronger interannual variations in the abiotic environment, than other spawning habitats of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua). Processes determining salinity and oxygen conditions in the basins are influenced both by long term gradual climate change, e.g. global warming, but also by short-term meteorological variations and events. Specifically one main factor influencing cod spawning conditions, the advection of highly saline and well-oxygenated water masses from the North Sea, is observed in irregular frequencies and causes strong interannual variations in stock productivity. This study investigates the possibility to use the available hydrographic process knowledge to predict the annual spawning conditions for Eastern Baltic cod in its most important spawning ground, the Bornholm Basin, only by salinity measurements from a specific location in the western Baltic. Such a prediction could serve as an environmental early warning indicator to inform stock assessment and management. Here we used a hydrodynamic model to hindcast hydrographic property fields for the last 40+ years. High and significant correlations were found for months early in the year between the 33m salinity level in the Arkona Basin and the oxygen-dependent cod spawning environment in the Bornholm Basin. Direct prediction of the Eastern Baltic cod egg survival in the Bornholm Basin based on salinity values in the Arkona Basin at the 33 m depth level is shown to be possible for eggs spawned by mid-age and young females, which currently predominate the stock structure. We recommend to routinely perform short-term predictions of the Eastern Baltic cod spawning environment, in order to generate environmental information highly relevant for stock dynamics. Our statistical approach offers the opportunity to make best use of permanently existing infrastructure in the western Baltic to timely provide scientific knowledge on the spawning conditions of Eastern Baltic cod. Furthermore it could be a tool to assist ecosystem-based fisheries management with a cost-effective implementation by including the short term predictions as a simple indicator in the annual assessments.
