Notizen: Transparent magnetic glass-ceramics were produced by infiltrating nano-porous glass with nitrate salts and firing. The resultant glass-ceramics contained spinel ferrite nanocrystals that exhibited ferromagnetic and superparamagnetic behavior depending on composition and firing temperature. Transparency in the near infrared was obtained when oxidizing conditions were used to prevent Fe2+ formation, while the porous matrix ensured nano-sized crystallites to limit scattering losses. MnFe2O4 glass-ceramics treated at 1000°C offered the best combination of magnetic and optical properties with a saturation magnetization of 5.6 emu/g, a Verdet constant of 16.5°/cm, and losses below 3 dB/mm at 1550 nm.

Notizen: The genome size of marine phytoplankton is in the order of 106–1011 base pairs. Within the phytoplankton it has often been assumed that dinoflagellates have extraordinarily large genomes that significantly contribute to their nutrient requirements. We test this hypothesis by compiling cell size and genome size data from across many phytoplankton lineages, and apply a simple regression model. Our results suggest that dinoflagellates do not have anomalously large genomes, but instead scale with cell size with the same slope and intercept as many other diverse phytoplankton taxa. Based on the known correlations of genome size and genome content in diverse taxa, we model the approximate expected genome structure in unsequenced lineages of marine phytoplankton. Based on this model, we hypothesize that retrotransposons play a significant role in genome size in marine phytoplankton.

Notizen: The reaction-bonded aluminum oxide (RBAO) process utilizes the oxidation of intensely milled aluminum/alumina powder compacts that are heat treated in air to make alumina-based ceramics. RBAO samples are typically oxidized in a furnace which is heated at 1°C/min to 1100°C. Heat-treating samples with a characteristic dimension 〉1 mm, without adjusting the furnace temperature program, usually results in a cracked ceramic. Cracking is caused by the excessive thermal and chemical stresses that result from steep temperature gradients (〉30°C/mm) and compositional gradients (〉5000 mol·(m3·mm)−1), which develop under the deleterious ignition and shrinking core reaction regimes. While adjustments to the furnace temperature program based on continuum models have had some success, the use of feedback-controlled firing is investigated as a means to avoid the furnace temperature program design step and to decrease the firing time. Feedback-controlled firing is shown to improve yields and significantly reduce the time required to completely oxidize the aluminum. For example, a 16 g sample with a characteristic dimension of 7.56 mm, which previously took 〉100 h to oxidize completely, was successfully oxidized crack free in 18.3 h using feedback control. Using the typical heat-treatment cycle, a 1 mm sample was fired in 18 h. With feedback-controlled firing, the same sized sample was fired in only 5 h.

Notizen: Abstract  In 2002, fire burnt areas of Mesophyll- and Notophyll Vine Forest in the Smithfield Conservation Park near Cairns, Australia. We assessed the ability of rainforest plant species to persist through fire via resprouting. Natural rates of mortality and resprouting in unburnt areas were assessed for all saplings (stems 〈 2 m) via 13, 2 × 50 m belt transects, and compared to estimates of mortality and resprouting in 26 transects in burnt areas. We also tested the resprouting ability per-individual stem of each species against all other stems with which it co-occurred. Totals of 1242 stems (138 species) were sampled in burnt transects and 503 stems (95 species) in unburnt transects (total number of unique species = 169). There was no difference in the number of stems existing prior to the fire in burnt and unburnt areas when expressed on a per-sample area basis. Resprouting from basal shoots and root suckers was significantly greater in burnt than in unburnt areas, but rates of stem sprouting were not different. In burnt areas 72 species were tested for resprouting ability and most (65/72) resprouted at similar rates. All species analysed contained individuals that resprouted. The resprouting response of five species was significantly lower, and in two species was significantly higher. For these species especially, fire may act as a mechanism altering relative abundances. The fire coincided with an extreme El Niño event. Current predictions indicate El Niño conditions may become increasingly common, suggesting fire events within rainforest could become more frequent. Resprouting as a general phenomenon of rainforest species, and differential resprouting ability between species should therefore be an important consideration in assessing the potential path of vegetation change in rainforests after fire.

Notizen: [Auszug] The Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) used to control insect pests relies on the release of large numbers of radiation-sterilized insects. Irradiation can have a negative impact on the subsequent performance of the released insects and therefore on the cost and effectiveness of a control program. This ...

Notizen: A ubiquitous early step in infection of man and animals by enteric bacterial pathogens like Salmonella, Shigella and enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) is the translocation of virulence effector proteins into mammalian cells via specialized type III secretion systems (TTSSs). Translocated effectors subvert the host cytoskeleton and stimulate signalling to promote bacterial internalization or survival. Target cell plasma membrane cholesterol is central to pathogen–host cross-talk, but the precise nature of its critical contribution remains unknown. Using in vitro cholesterol-binding assays, we demonstrate that Salmonella (SipB) and Shigella (IpaB) TTSS translocon components bind cholesterol with high affinity. Direct visualization of cell-associated fluorescently labelled SipB and parallel immunogold transmission electron microscopy revealed that cholesterol levels limit both the amount and distribution of plasma membrane-integrated translocon. Correspondingly, cholesterol depletion blocked effector translocation into cultured mammalian cells by not only the related Salmonella and Shigella TTSSs, but also the more divergent EPEC system. The data reveal that cholesterol-dependent association of the bacterial TTSS translocon with the target cell plasma membrane is essential for translocon activation and effector delivery into mammalian cells.

Notizen: Purpose - The purpose of this study is to develop and test a theoretical model of international strategic alliance (ISA) relationship development underpinned by the foreign investment decision process. Design/methodology/approach - The conceptual model demonstrates an ISA investment decision process consisting of three ex ante formation aspects - parent firm top management's general attitude towards alliances, scope of parent's cooperation analysis for the focal alliance, and interfirm collaborative history - and two key ex post relational outcomes - parent's willingness to invest in the alliance business and satisfaction with the relationship. The theoretical propositions were tested among a sample of 94 ISAs using structural equation modelling. Findings - The results show that top management attitude towards alliances is negatively associated with scope of cooperation analysis, but only where collaborative history exists. Scope of cooperation analysis, in turn, positively influences willingness to invest. And together these factors exert a positive influence on relationship satisfaction. Originality/value - The ISA literature has devoted significant attention to partner characteristics important in venture formation, as well as to post-formation partnership management issues. However, there is a dearth of empirical research explaining the role of venture formation aspects in influencing ISA relationship development and success. The study adds to the limited empirical research work on the role of venture formation aspects in influencing ISA relationship development and success. It provides new and detailed insights for business practitioners and academic researchers concerning the behavioural, decision process underlying ISA partnership progression.
