Notes: Already for a long time retailers have taken back products. In this paper we explore the factors contributing to the decision of combining vs separating inbound and outbound flows during the return handling process. We do so through a comparative analysis of the operations in nine retailer warehouses, which can be divided into three groups: food retailers, non-food store chains and mail order companies. We identify both aggravating factors and facilitating actions for return handling. Furthermore, we bring about recommendations for practice. At the end we put forward propositions that are useful in feeding studies on return handling efficiency. In particular, we conjecture over the impact that return volume and product diversity have on the decision for combining vs separating the reverse and forward flows.

Notes: Solid wastes are today one of the worst problems in the word, mainly because of the increase in volume and the high capacity of environmental contamination. The aim of this work is to analyze the possibility of use sawing granite wastes as alternative ceramic raw materials for the production of bricks and roof tiles. Samples were collected from wastes of several granites companies from the northeast region of Brazil. They were submitted to particle size and mineralogical characterization. Some ceramic compositions were prepared with granite waste and submitted to technological tests. The results indicated that the wastes have particle size distribution and mineralogical composition similar to conventional non-plastic ceramic raw materials. These wastes can be used in substitution of conventional raw materials in ceramic formulations in proportions up to 50 per cent. This can be important to save traditional raw materials from the region and decreasing the aggression to the environment.

Notes: The project IDEA - Interactive Database for Energy-efficient Architecture - is a multinational collaborative project to build a European knowledge base on advanced energy conscious building design. At the core of this project are two earlier multimedia developments, the Swiss program DIAS and the German adaptation NESA which present the principles and applications of solar architecture in the respective national contexts. IDEA aims to improve know-how of European professionals and exchange of information between them. The database includes information on exemplary buildings, their technical concepts and on other specific conditions. IDEA presents the existing state of the art in the field of energy-efficient architecture by means of a multimedia database of built examples, an encyclopedia of design concepts and a set of interactive design support tools. The built examples have been selected from around Europe. IDEA assembles technical information on materials and energy-related standards and regulations and provides climatic data from all relevant European regions.

Notes: Warehousing is becoming more and more a critical activity in the supply chain to outperform competitors on customer service, lead times, and costs. However, if warehousing is to be a source of competitive advantage, then the implementation of a warehouse management information system (WMS) is a necessary condition to achieve efficiently the high performance of warehousing operations required in today's marketplace. A major practical question is then whether a given warehouse should implement a standard or a tailor-made WMS. A standard WMS offers many advantages; it is a proven solution, it is less costly, the implementation lead time is shorter, and the after-sales service is better. On the other hand, a standard WMS remains largely making compromises between the way a warehouse wants to work and the way the system allows the warehouse to work. In certain environments, such compromises might seriously degrade warehouse performance, in which case it then seems better to implement a tailor-made WMS. To answer the above question, we conducted an exploratory field study of warehouses with recently implemented WMSs to first understand the empirical reality and then build up a theory linking the constructs warehouse complexity and warehouse planning and control structure. Warehouse complexity refers to the number and variety of items to be handled, the degree of their interaction, and the number, nature, i.e. technologies used, and variety of processes, determined among others by the warehouse's position in the logistic chain and the nature of its market. Warehouse planning and control structure refers to the management functions that plan, direct, coordinate and control the flow of goods through the warehouse, from the time of receiving to the time of shipping. It is strongly related to the WMS in use. We found that the number of orderlines to be processed per day and the number of stock-keeping units are the two main observable aspects of warehouse complexity; that the more complex the warehouse is, the more tailor-made the planning and control structure should be; that for simple warehouses a standardized planning and control structure suffices; and that the design of a new-to-build warehouse should be carried out in close concert with the design of the warehouse planning and control structure.

Notes: This paper describes the typical specifications and features of a novel low-cost and high-performance universal transducer interface (UTI). The easy-to-use interface enables fast prototyping of systems with capacitive sensors, platinum resistors, thermistors, resistive bridges and potentiometers. It is shown that a high accuracy and reliability can be obtained by applying a combination of advanced techniques, such as, auto-calibration, advanced chopping and dynamic element matching. Examples of smart sensor systems, using the UTI and the popular microcontrollers, Intel 87C51FX and PIC16C73, have been presented.

Notes: The objective of this study is to test whether gender stereotyping in printed advertising is more prevalent in masculine as opposed to feminine countries. We consider this to be important, as advertising is generally more influential than literature in spreading stereotypical ideas, given its high accessibility. Moreover, the way in which sexes are portrayed in advertising affects people's perceptions of gender roles in real life. Using content analysis, we collected empirical data on gender stereotyping of women depicted in 946 printed advertisements from two European countries widely differing in their level of masculinity - the UK and The Netherlands. The results indicate that a country's masculinity index is hardly related to the use of gender stereotyping in printed advertising, potentially implying that other factors underlie the use of gender stereotyping.

Notes: This paper contrasts the different regional effects of an homogeneous monetary policy, and studies the local characteristics that underlie these differential responses. To this purpose, we use Spanish regional data and estimate a vector autoregression (VAR) model using seemingly unrelated regression (SUR) techniques to characterise regional responses. Results provide evidence of statistically different regional responses of real variables to monetary policy shocks. We use these estimated responses to analyse if they depend on regional characteristics. Results show that manufacturing sectors, a negative financial position, as well as the degree of nominal wage indexation, enhance the effect of monetary policy.

Notes: This paper highlights the importance and demonstrates the application of a segmentation strategy, based on the concept of the family life cycle, in real estate market analysis. Each stage in the family life cycle has its particular preferences regarding locational attributes. Neighbourhood characteristics can, therefore, reveal which segments should be the target of marketing campaigns. In order to increase the chances of a building successfully meeting the user's requirements and therefore of achieving quick sales, its spatial conception, facilities and leisure attributes must be orientated to satisfy these different segments. To confirm this hypothesis and to exemplify the method presented, two high rise apartment buildings, in the city of Florianópolis, Brazil, are evaluated. The compatibility of their architectural attributes and the identified needs of respective potential marketing segments (according to the study of the locations) is verified. The results of this analysis, based on how fast the apartments were sold, confirm the effectiveness of the method.

Notes: This paper reviews the empirical research dealing with two types of intragroup interdependence at both the group and individual levels of analysis. Based on this review we identify directions for further research, including attention to levels-of-analysis issues, the effects of interdependence over time, and the development of prescriptive theory. The paper ends with the description of a theory-based intervention framework, intended as a tool for choosing the appropriate intervention in work teams and for stimulating the development of such a prescriptive theory.

Notes: Sociotechnical systems theory (STS) does not address in full the implications of the team-context relations, despite its open systems character. There is a need to open STS into a sociotechnical business systems (STBS) theory and practice. We observe three interrelated aspects that are important for STBS. First, the design of the production structure is a traditional STS aspect. Second, the design of the control structure on the team level needs an elaboration compared with STS. The third aspect is the social-dynamic alignment. We describe the mini-company concept and argue that this concept is a specification of STBS covering the three aspects. The case of the implementation of mini-companies in a Dutch manufacturing plant illustrates the strengths of the concept.
