    Description: When examined in their sedimentologic and stratigraphic context, ichnofabrics and component ichnofossils can help decipher paleoceanography and sea-level histories from marine deposits (Savrda, 1995, http://www.jstor.org/stable/3515095). Thus far, applications of ichnology in paleoceanographic investigations have been restricted to slowly deposited, predominantly biogenic sediments and/or strata deposited in oxygen-deficient, tectonically active basins. Moreover, ichnologic applications in sequence stratigraphic studies largely have been restricted to strata deposited in relatively shallow-water shelf or foreland basin settings. The limits of previous studies provided impetus for detailed postcruise examination of Quaternary deposits recovered at Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1073 on the New Jersey margin. These deposits provide the opportunity to assess the sedimentary and ichnofabric record of glacio-eustatic cycles in a passive continental slope setting characterized by relatively rapid accumulation of siliciclastic sediments in an area not far removed from the Laurentide ice margin. The primary purpose of this data report is to present basic sedimentologic and ichnologic observations made at the decimeter scale throughout the Quaternary sequence from Site 1073. Data analysis and interpretation in the context of climate and sea-level histories, as inferred from oxygen isotopic, palynologic, and seismic studies, are ongoing and will be presented in subsequent papers prepared for open literature (e.g., Savrda et al., in press).

    Notes: Pure rotational spectra of the IO radical have been observed for vibrational levels up to v=13 in the X1 2Π3/2 state and up to v=9 in the X2 2Π1/2 state. Isotopically enriched I18O rotational spectra have been observed for vibrational levels up to v=5 in both the X1 and X2 states. These are the first high-resolution spectra of any kind reported for the X2 state and greatly extend the available data for the X1 state. The data for both isotopomers have been fitted simultaneously to a single set of 2Π parameters with fixed isotopic ratios. The isotope relations among the parameters have provided a means of decorrelating the electron spin-rotation constant γ from the fine-structure centrifugal distortion constant, AD, and have allowed the first determination of an effective value for γ. The rotation–vibration constants correspond to the equilibrium molecular properties re(X1)=186.762 pm, re(X2)=188.468 pm, ωe(X1)=681.69 cm−1, and ωe(X2)=645.29 cm−1. These constants have been used to calculate X1 and X2 Rydberg–Klein–Rees potentials encompassing energies up to 40% of the dissociation limit. A complete set of hyperfine coupling constants has been determined for the first time and interpreted using appropriate relativistic atomic radial integrals. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We describe the photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL) and Fourier transform infrared absorbance spectroscopy characterization of a large set of InAs/GaSb type-II strained layer superlattice (SLS) samples. The samples are designed to probe the effect of GaSb layer thickness on the optical properties of the SLS, while the InAs-layer thickness is held fixed. As the GaSb layer thickness is increased, we observe a spectral blue shift of the PL peaks that is accompanied by an increase in intensity, narrower linewidths, and a large reduction in the temperature sensitivity of the luminescence. These effects occur despite a significant reduction in the electron-hole wave function overlap as the GaSb layer thickness is increased. In addition, we compare the results of empirical pseudopotential model (EPM) calculations to the observed blueshift of the primary band gap. The EPM calculations are found to be in very good agreement with the observed data. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Performance appraisals are often described asthe "job managers love to hate". A study was designed to provide sales managers with information designed to increase the benefits of engaging in the evaluation process and reduce the negative sentiments often associated with appraisals. To accomplish this objective, 214 salespeople were personally interviewed and asked to provide information regarding their perceptions of their performance appraisals. The results indicate that salespeople have positive perceptions regarding the appraisal process. Findings also indicate that while salespeople are oftenevaluated at least twice annually, the criteria used are not always the ones thatsalespeople view as being the most appropriate. The conclusions derived from the analysis may provide insight to sales managers as they attempt to develop and implement appraisal processes that are viewed as being valid and as they attempt to enhance the benefits that may be obtained from engaging in this process.

    Description: A transect of three holes drilled across the Blake Nose, western North Atlantic Ocean, retrieved cores of black shale facies related to the Albian Oceanic Anoxic Events (OAE) 1b and 1d. Sedimentary organic matter (SOM) recovered from Ocean Drilling Program Hole 1049A from the eastern end of the transect showed that before black shale facies deposition organic matter preservation was a Type III-IV SOM. Petrography reveals that this SOM is composed mostly of degraded algal debris, amorphous SOM and a minor component of Type III-IV terrestrial SOM, mostly detroinertinite. When black shale facies deposition commenced, the geochemical character of the SOM changed from a relatively oxygen-rich Type III-IV to relatively hydrogen-rich Type II. Petrography, biomarker and organic carbon isotopic data indicate marine and terrestrial SOM sources that do not appear to change during the transition from light-grey calcareous ooze to the black shale facies. Black shale subfacies layers alternate from laminated to homogeneous. Some of the laminated and the poorly laminated to homogeneous layers are organic carbon and hydrogen rich as well, suggesting that at least two SOM depositional processes are influencing the black shale facies. The laminated beds reflect deposition in a low sedimentation rate (6m Ma-1) environment with SOM derived mostly from gravity settling from the overlying water into sometimes dysoxic bottom water. The source of this high hydrogen content SOM is problematic because before black shale deposition, the marine SOM supplied to the site is geochemically a Type III-IV. A clue to the source of the H-rich SOM may be the interlayering of relatively homogeneous ooze layers that have a widely variable SOM content and quality. These relatively thick, sometimes subtly graded, sediment layers are thought to be deposited from a Type II SOM-enriched sediment suspension generated by turbidites or direct turbidite deposition.
