    Notes: We study the stretch dynamics of flexible dendritic polymers (dendrimers and stars) under external forces. We work in the framework of the bead-spring model with hydrodynamic interactions (HI) and take spacers of different length into account. The applied fields may, e.g., be of mechanical or electrical origin. We study the motion of a specific monomer, the time evolution of the stretch (the mean distance of the monomer on which the force acts from the center of mass of the polymer) and also the elastic moduli. We analyze how these dynamic properties depend on the underlying topology, i.e., on the number of generations for dendrimers and the length and number of branches for stars. As a special point we assess in how far the HI method utilized here (the Kirkwood–Riseman scheme) is stable for dendritic structures. Characteristic for the topology is the intermediate dynamics (between short and long times). It turns out that, different from stars, for dendrimers the stretch dynamics is for intermediate times close to logarithmic; hence the crossover in behavior at intermediate times is characteristic of the polymer's topology. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The treatment of Reynolds equation when the film thickness is unknown and the center of pressure is known, together with the energy and the bending equation, allows a realistic simulation of the performance of large thrust bearing. In a spring-supported thrust-pad bearing the distortion caused by the generated pressure thermal gradient yields a surface profile of opposite shapes. The thermoelastic analysis performed here makes it possible to determine the resultant film shape of the thrust pad.

    Notes: Plasma enhanced deposition of amorphous aluminum nitride (AlN) using trimethylaluminum, hydrogen, and nitrogen was performed in a capacitively coupled plasma system. Temperature was varied from 350 to 550 °C, and pressure dependence of the film structure was investigated. Films were characterized by Fourier transform infrared, Rutherford backscattering (RBS), ellipsometry, and x-ray diffraction (XRD). The films are amorphous in nature, as indicated by XRD. Variations in the refractive index were observed in ellipsometric measurements, which is explained by the incorporation of carbon in the films, and confirmed by RBS. Capacitance–voltage, conductance–voltage (G–V), and current–voltage measurements were performed to reveal bulk and interface electrical properties. The electrical properties showed marked dependence on processing conditions of the AlN films. Clear peaks as observed in the G–V characteristics indicated that the losses are predominantly due to interface states. The interface state density ranged between 1010 and 1011 eV−1 cm−2. Annealing in hydrogen resulted in lowering of interface state density values. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have studied the capacitance–voltage (C–V), conductance–voltage (G–V), and current–voltage characteristics of fluorinated amorphous carbon (a-C:Fx) films using metal/a-C:Fx/Si and metal/a-C:Fx/metal structures, respectively. Samples annealed in a vacuum were also studied. The C–V curves of the as-deposited sample are stretched about the voltage axis. Interface state density of 4.1×1011 cm−2 eV−1 at the midgap was calculated. Annealing the sample deposited on Si in a vacuum caused more frequency dispersion in the C–V and G–V curves, probably due to the diffusion of carbon into silicon. The bulk density of states for samples deposited on metal, measured by space-charge-limited current technique, decreased from 4×1018 eV−1 cm−3 for the as-deposited sample, to 7×1017 eV−1 cm−3 for the annealed sample. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Haemozoin, the malaria pigment, regulates the synthesis of several host cytokines and has been found to be associated with the disease severity. Here we describe that malarial patients produce a significant amount of anti-haemozoin IgM antibodies. Levels of these antibodies were higher among the complicated Plasmodium falciparum cases compared to the non-complicated P. falciparum group and Plasmodium vivax patients. The P. falciparum haemozoin also induced the synthesis of tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) by the monocytes of the healthy individuals, but the production of these cytokines by the monocytes was inhibited in the presence of the anti-haemozoin IgM antibodies. Therefore, it seems that the host produces these antibodies (mainly IgM types) during malarial infection that can influence the progression of the disease by inhibiting the production of cytokines.

    Notes: We describe here an optically pumped molecular laser cavity configuration which allows near total transmission of pump radiation into the cavity maintaining, at the same time, a high Q value at the lasing wavelength. This also has built into it the capability of elimination of unabsorbed pump radiation, isolation of pump cavity, and suppression of self-focusing effect. The efficient performance of this versatile cavity has been demonstrated in the pulsed operation of a NH3 laser pumped by a transversely excited atmospheric CO2 laser. The low lasing threshold observed here suggests that this cavity can also be employed for the continuous operation of such lasers. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report here that the unique geometry of the rotating dielectric spark gap allows the diode-less operation of a command resonant charging pulser network. An average power of about 3.5 kW with a peak value of 75 MW was switched at a repetition rate of 600 Hz into a dummy load resembling a typical TEA CO2 laser. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Thin films (9 μm) of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) are irradiated by swift heavy ions (180 MeV Ag14+) in the fluence range 1×1010–1×1012ions/cm2 with an electronic linear energy transfer LET∼11 keV/nm. In sharp contrast to the previous results, the most characteristic crystalline asymmetric and symmetric "CH2" doublets (located at 3025 and 2985 cm−1), have shown remarkable increase in their respective Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) absorbance intensities upon low fluence ion impact (1010 ions/cm2). This increase in absorbance is in consonance with the simultaneous decrease of the transmission intensities of other crystalline bending vibration bands located at 532 (CF2 bending), 614, 796, and 975 cm−1 (all due to CH2 bending) at the similar ion fluence. It appears most probable from the results that, being a polar polymer, the molecular dipoles in PVDF forming a hydrogen bond network get realigned upon irradiation into a highly ordered state of chain molecules in the crystalline regions and create volume elements as crystallites. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract: Fission fragment mass and energy distributions and their correlations have been measured for the 16O and 19F + 209Bi reactions over a wide range of excitation energies ( E * = 30-50 MeV). It is observed that in the case of 16O + 209Bi reaction, the average total fragment kinetic energy, 〈TKE〉 is nearly independent of the bombarding energy. However, in the case of 19F + 209Bi reaction, the average total kinetic energy of the fission fragments shows a peaking behaviour near the barrier. The variation in 〈TKE〉 at near barrier energies in the 19F + 209Bi system seems to be correlated with corresponding strong variation in the variance of the fragment mass distribution. The present results may imply certain dynamical effects leading to compact scission configurations in the fission of 19F + 209Bi system at near barrier bombarding energies.

    Notes: Abstract: A structural study has been performed on the La0.8Sr0.2FexCo1-xO3 (x = 0.025 to 0.3) system displaying large magnetoresistance (MR) at room temperature. A detailed analysis of the crystal structure and microstructure was done by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission and scanning electron microscopy (TEM and SEM). The atomic resolution TEM images and the appearing superreflections in the corresponding SAED patterns revealed that a superstructure is formed due to the presence of iron. The correlation between the ordered microstructure and the observed large MR ratio is discussed. 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy was utilized to gain information on the valence state of iron in the sample with x = 0.3. The lattice parameters of Fe- doped La0.8Sr0.2FexCo1-xO3 compounds were found to increase monotonously with increasing Fe content. The valence state of iron was found to be Fe3+.
