    Description: In the lunar magma ocean model, ferroan anorthosites (FANs) are expected to be derived from a relatively undifferentiated source with chondritic REE abundances and yield the oldest radiometric ages of any lunar rocks. Samarium-neodymium-isotopic analyses of 60025 and 67016 yielded ages of 4.44 +/- 0.02 Ga and 4.53 +/- 0.12 Ga and initial Epsilon(sub Nd)(sup 143) values in excess of -0.5. These ages are within error of ages determined on some Mg-suite rocks by researchers. Thus, the existing data are not completely consistent with the standard magma ocean model. We have completed isotopic analysis on the pristine FAN 62236 in order to place further constraints on lunar crust-forming processes.

    Notes: Potassium (K+) conductances are known to be involved in cell proliferation of a number of nonexcitable cell types. The nature of the mechanism by which K+ channel inhibition reduces cell proliferation has remained elusive despite intensive search. We investigated whether such a phenomenon could be demonstrated in excitable cells, using the GH3 pituitary cell line as a cell model. Our aims were: (1) to study the effect of K+ channel inhibition on the proliferation of GH3 cells; and (2) to investigate the putative intracellular signals involved in this inhibition. Tetraethylammonium chloride (TEA), a blocker of the calcium (Ca2+)-dependent K+ conductances of GH3, was found to reversibly inhibit cell proliferation, as measured by 3H-thymidine incorporation. Cell cycle block specifically occurred at the G1/S phase of the cell cycle. This inhibition of proliferation was observed for 1-4 mM TEA, which suppressed most of the Ca2+-activated K+ current and part of the inward rectifying K+ current, as shown by electrophysiological experiments. Increasing extracellular K+ concentrations with KCl also inhibited cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner. Both TEA and KCl depolarized the cells and increased intracellular Ca2+ levels ([Ca2+]i), showing that, in this type of excitable cell, inhibition of cell proliferation can be associated with elevated Ca2+ levels. Ca2+ and membrane resting potential (MRP) were considered as possible messengers of this inhibition. Our results suggest that cell cycle arrest of GH3 cells by K+ channel block probably involves an additional pathway, distinct from those of Ca2+ and MRP. J. Cell.     Notes: Exposure to fast-rise-time ultra-wideband (UWB) electromagnetic pulses has been postulated to result in effects on biological tissue (including the cardiovascular system). In the current study, 10 anesthetized Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to pulses produced by a Sandia UWB pulse generator (average values of exposures over three different pulse repetition rates: rise time, 174-218 ps; peak E field, 87-104 kV/m; pulse duration, 0.97-0.99 ns). Exposures to 50, 500 and 1000 pulses/s resulted in no significant changes in heart rate or mean arterial blood pressure measured every 30 s during 2 min of exposure and for 2 min after the exposure. The results suggest that acute UWB whole-body exposure under these conditions does not have an immediate detrimental effect on these cardiovascular system variables in anesthetized rats.     Notes: The multifunctional transcription factor YY1 is associated with the nuclear matrix. In osteoblasts, the interaction of several nuclear matrix-associated transcription factors with the bone specific osteocalcin gene contributes to tissue-specific and steroid hormone-mediated transcription. A canonical nuclear matrix targeting signal (NMTS) is present in all members of the AML/CBFβ transcription factor family, but not in other transcription factors. Therefore, we defined sequences that direct YY1 (414 amino acids) to the nuclear matrix. A series of epitope tagged deletion constructs were expressed in HeLa S3 and in human Saos-2 osteosarcoma cells. Subcellular distribution was determined in whole cells and nuclear matrices in situ by immunofluorescence. We demonstrated that amino acids 257-341 in the C-terminal domain of YY1 are necessary for nuclear matrix association. We also observed that sequences within the N-terminal domain of YY1 permit weak nuclear matrix binding. Our data further suggest that the Gal4 epitope tag contains sequences that affect subcellular localization, but not targeting to the nuclear matrix. The targeted association of YY1 with the nuclear matrix provides an additional level of functional regulation for this transcription factor that can exhibit positive and negative control. J. Cell.     Notes: In the framework of the EU programme for systematic sequencing of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae genome we determined the sequence of a 9359 bp fragment of the right arm of chromosome VII. Five open reading frames (ORFs) of at least 300 nucleotides were found in this region. YGR267c encodes a protein with significant similarity to the enzyme GTP-cyclohydrolase I, that controls the first step in the biosynthetic pathway leading to various pterins and shows a high degree of sequence conservation from bacteria to mammals. We have recently demonstrated (Nardese et al., 1996) that YGR267c corresponds to the FOL2 gene, previously localized in the same chromosomal region by genetic mapping. The protein deduced from YGR270w belongs to the superfamily of putative ATPases associated with diverse cellular activities. It corresponds to the YTA7 gene, a member of a set of yeast genes coding for putative ATPases with high similarity to constituents of the 26S protease. The three ORFs YGR266w, YGR268c and YGR269w encode putative products of unknown function, with neither significant similarity to proteins in databases nor recognizable domains. YGR268c and YGR269w are partially overlapping ORFs: YGR268c seems to correspond to a real gene, whereas YGR269w is probably a fortuitous ORF. The sequence has been entered in the EMBL data library under Accession Number Y07893. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: The uracil permease gene of Schizosaccharomyces pombe was cloned and sequenced. The deduced protein sequence shares strong similarities with five open reading frames from Saccharomyces cerevisiae, namely the uracil permease encoded by the FUR4 gene, the allantoin permease encoded by DAL4, a putative uridine permease (YBL042C) and two unknown ORFs YOR071c and YLR237w.A topological model retaining ten transmembrane helices, based on predictions and on experimental data established for the uracil permease of S. cerevisiae by Galan and coworkers (1996), is discussed for the four closest proteins of this family of transporters. The sequence of the uracil permease gene of S. pombe has been deposited in the EMBL data bank under Accession Number X98696. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Description: Trace amounts of glycine, serine, and alanine were detected in the carbonate component of the martian meteorite ALH84001 by high-performance liquid chromatography. The detected amino acids were not uniformly distributed in the carbonate component and ranged in concentration from 0.1 to 7 parts per million. Although the detected alanine consists primarily of the L enantiomer, low concentrations (〈0.1 parts per million) of endogenous D-alanine may be present in the ALH84001 carbonates. The amino acids present in this sample of ALH84001 appear to be terrestrial in origin and similar to those in Allan Hills ice, although the possibility cannot be ruled out that minute amounts of some amino acids such as D-alanine are preserved in the meteorite.

    Description: The Thermal Emission Spectrometer spectra of low albedo surface materials suggests that a four to one mixture of pyroxene to plagioclase, together with about a 35 percent dust component provides the best fit to the spectrum. Qualitative upper limits can be placed on the concentration of carbonates (〈10 percent), olivine (〈10 percent), clay minerals (〈20 percent), and quartz (〈5 percent) in the limited regions observed. Limb observations in the northern hemisphere reveal low-lying dust hazes and detached water-ice clouds at altitudes up to 55 kilometers. At an aerocentric longitude of 224 degrees a major dust storm developed in the Noachis Terra region. The south polar cap retreat was similar to that observed by Viking.

    Description: Radio Doppler data from a single encounter (C3) of the Galileo spacecraft with Callisto, the outermost Galilean moon of Jupiter, indicated that Callisto was probably undifferentiated. Now, similar data from a second encounter (C9) corroborate this conclusion, but more accurate data from a third encounter (C10) indicate that the rock and ice within Callisto have partially, but not completely, separated. Callisto may be differentiated into a rock-metal core less than 25 percent of Callisto's radius, an outer layer of clean ice less than 350 km thick, and a middle layer of mixed rock and ice. Models in which ice and rock are mixed all the way to the center of Callisto are also consistent with the data.
