Notes: Summary The effects of thymoxamine 0.5% solution and of a placebo solution (mannitol) on the mydriasis induced by ibopamine 1% solution were evaluated in 8 healthy volunteers and 12 patients with eye diseases. One drop of ibopamine was instilled into each eye and 30 min later 1 drop of thymoxamine was instilled into one eye and 1 drop of placebo into the contralateral eye. Pupillary diameter was measured before and 30 min after the instillation of ibopamine, immediately before the treatment with thymoxamine and placebo and 30, 60 and 90 min after the instillation of thymoxamine or of placebo. Within 30 min of treatment, ibopamine had produced a statistically and clinically significant mydriatic effect. In eyes treated with thymoxamine, prompt reversal of mydriasis was observed, the baseline diameter being observed within 60 min. No difference in the time-course of the mydriatic effect was detected between healthy subjects and patients. The pupillary response to thymoxamine was not influenced by the colour of the iris. The tolerability of ibopamine and of thymoxamine was good. No local or systemic adverse events were seen or reported.

Notes: A trained sensory panel assessed 20 Italian-type dry-cured hams and the data were submitted to Generalized Procrustes Analysis. Results showed that aged, salty and acid tastes, as well as aged and fresh pork odors were the most important descriptors of this type of ham. Chemical analyses on the same samples, made up a set of 26 compositional or nonvolatile parameters and a block of 122 volatile components. Partial-least squares regression, applied to relate each taste attribute to non-volatile data and each odor term to volatile components, showed that the hams with highest acceptability scores had high levels of free tyrosine and lysine, (nonvolatile components) and of methyl-branched short-chain esters and alcohols (volatiles).

Notes: Three species of gobiid fish inhabit the freshwater Lake Trichonis of western Greece. Two of these species, Economidichthys pygmaeus and E. trichonis are endemic, and the third is the widespread Knipowitschia caucasica. There are habitat separations between the three species, E. pygmaeus and E. trichonis prefer vegetated areas, the first being fully demersal at all stages of development and the second being semi-demersal. Knipowitschia caucasica prefers sandy bottoms and is distributed in shallower waters. Female E. pygmaeus and E. trichonis spawn in nests prepared by the males in the cavities of broken reeds. The males subsequently guard the eggs until they hatch, with females playing no role in parental care. Economidichthys trichonis is probably the smallest freshwater European species. Its eggs are ovoid, measuring about 0.64 × 0.58 mm, from which tiny, unpigmented and incompletely developed pelagic larvae hatch out after an incubation period lasting less than 1 day at a water temperature of 19.5° C. The eggs of E. pygmaeus are cylindrical and larger, measuring about 2.38 × 0.89 mm, from which relatively large, strongly pigmented and ontogenetically more advanced larvae hatch out after a longer incubation period. Both species reproduce only once in their lifetime, at the age of 1 year, and die shortly after spawning, but the breeding season involves several spawnings by each individual fish. These biological, developmental and reproductive characteristics are discussed in relation to current theories on evolution of life-historics.

Notes: Abstract The formation reactions of IrO2/TiO2 mixed oxide films supported on titanium metal plate were followed by thermoanalytical (simultaneous TGA, DTG, DTA) and combined thermoanalyticalmass spectrometric (TGA-MS) techniques. The electrochemical characterization of the fired coatings was made by cyclic voltammetry. The thermal decomposition of the titanium precursor salt, titanium diisopropoxide bis-2,4-pentanedionate, shows a major change in the presence of hydrated iridium (iii) chloride. Due to the catalytic effect of the added noble metal, an almost complete conversion of the organic components of the precursor mixture to CO2 and H2O is observed in the combustion stage. Chlorine, from thermal decomposition of the iridium salt, is produced in a separate stage at higher temperatures, indicating that a sequence of steps occurs prior to the oxide formation. For iridium chloride alone a complexation between the metal ion and the solvent (isopropanol) is observed, leading eventually to H2O and CO2 production (combustion step) between 300 and 500° C. The cyclic voltammetry results indicate that the features of the precursor reaction affect the charge storage capacity of the oxide films.

Notes: Abstract Pseudomonas stutzeri OX1 is able to grow ono-xylene but is unable to grow onm-xylene andp-xylene, which are partially metabolized through theo-xylene degradative pathway leading to the formation of dimethylphenols toxic to OX1.P. stutzeri spontaneous mutants able to grow onm-xylene andp-xylene have been isolated. These mutants soon lose the ability to grow ono-xylene. Data from HPLC analyses and from induction studies suggest that in these mutantsm-xylene andp-xylene could be metabolized through the oxidation of a methyl substituent.P. stutzeri chromosomal DNA is shown to share homology with pWW0 catabolic genes. In the mutant strains the region homologous to pWW0 upper pathway genes has undergone a genomic rearrangement.

Notes: Abstract New ultraviolet (λ≃1300 A, λ≃3400 A),HST FOC observations have been used to derive the UV color-magnitude diagram (CMD) of R136, with the main scientific goal of studying the upper end of the stellar mass function at ultraviolet wavelengths where the color degeneracy encountered in visual CMDs is less severe. The CMD has been compared to a set of theoretical isochrones, which have been computed using the latest generation of evolutionary models and model atmospheres for early type stars. Wolf-Rayet stars are included. Comparison of theTheoretical andobserved CMD suggests that there are no stars brighter than M130≃−11. We use the observed main sequence turn-off and the known spectroscopic properties of the stellar population to derive constraints on the most probable age of R136. The presence of WNL stars and the lack of red supergiants suggests a most likely age of 3±1 Myr. A theoretical isochrone of 3±1 Myr is consistent with the observed stellar content of R136 if the most massive stars have initial masses around ≃50 M⊙.

Notes: Abstract We have isolated and sequenced one intergenic region and a small part of the flanking regions (18S and 26S rRNA coding regions) of the rRNA-encoding genes (rDNA) from the sea urchinParacentrotus lividus. This region is about 3.8 Kb long. Northern blot hybridizations and S1 mapping experiments demonstrated the presence of a partially processed 21S rRNA precursor which has the same 5′ terminus as the 32S primary precursor, also in developmental stages characterized by a low rate of rRNA synthesis.

Notes: The recent development of specific and sensitive surface techniques has prompted new studies of electrode properties, in particular of their catalytic activity. Many papers have reported the use of X-ray photoelectron spectrometry, Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, secondary ion mass spectrometry etc. in the analysis of mixed-oxide films, and interesting results concerning electrochromic and catalytic properties have been shown. The influence of the method of preparation has also been confirmed, together with the important role of microstructural composition. In previous studies, our group performed composition analyses and depth profiles of RuO2/TiO2 and IrO2/TiO2 mixed-oxide coatings by secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). Many positive-and negative-ion species are of particular interest in characterizing electrodes synthesized by different methods. This paper presents the results obtained by SIMS analysis of IrO2/RuO2/TiO2 films before and after their use in CI2 anodic production. Mass spectra obtained under different experimental conditions are reported and the aspects related to surface compositon modifications induced by Cl2 evolution on electrode films are discussed.
