    Notes: Nickel ferrites have been produced by the rf plasma deposition technique for the first time. This technique has promise for large scale fine particle production of ferrites. Powder x-ray diffraction linewidth measurements show an average particle size of about 55 nm. Mossbauer measurements show the presence of both the nickel ferrite and the nickel zinc ferrite with Fe3O4 created in each ferrite production process as an impurity. Magnetization and Mössbauer measurements show evidence that the aerosol prepared samples have small particle characteristics as compared to solid state reacted bulk materials.

    Notes: Linear and nonlinear miniband electron transport through a laterally confined superlattice is investigated systematically using the balance-equation theory. Up to 21 transverse subbands with intrasubband and intersubband impurity and phonon scatterings are included. Nonlinear drift velocity and electron temperature as functions of the electric field are calculated at lattice temperatures ranging from 45 to 300 K for several sets of superlattices having different degrees of transverse confinements. With increasing the lateral cross-section diameters, linear mobility, peak drift velocity, threshold electric field, and all the other transport properties discussed exhibit significant oscillations at lattice temperatures as high as 300 K. Drastic changes in transport properties occur in GaAs-based systems when polar optic phonon scatterings set in or are prohibited due to subband structure.

    Notes: Electrochemically etched tungsten scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tips are dc sputter coated with 20 nm of gold (0.04 nm/s and 10 mTorr of argon). Transmission electron microscope (TEM) images of typical etched tips and gold-coated etched tips are presented. The gold layer forms as a series of spherical sections having a mean height of 6.7 nm and mean width of 19.6 nm. STM images are reported for the uncoated W tips, and for gold-coated graphite after coating the tip with gold. We also provide scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and STM images of the surface of a thin CuTCNQ film. The STM image taken with a gold-coated W tip compares very well to the SEM image of the same sample. Gold coating provides a relatively inexpensive and easy way to produce chemically stable tips of well known electronic structure for use in ambient atmosphere STM studies of morphology (structures ≥10 nm) where atomic resolution is not required.

    Notes: In this letter, the spatial correlation model has been used for interpreting the line shapes of the first-order longitudinal-optical phonon Raman spectra of ZnSe/GaAs epitaxial layers. The good agreement between theoretical line shapes and the experiment measurements was illustrated for the samples grown by the molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), hot wall epitaxy (HWE), and hot wall beam epitaxy (HWBE).

    Notes: A boiling water treatment of light emitting porous silicon can give rise to a large blue shift of its photoluminescence spectrum and meanwhile strengthen the skeleton of porous Si by filling up many pores with aqueous oxide. A stable blue-green light emission at the peak wavelength down to 500 nm is achieved. FTIR measurements show that the formation of Si dihydride on the sidewall surfaces of the Si rods is not responsible to the visible luminescence for the very thin Si wires.

    Notes: Buckybundles (bundles of buckytubes), approximately 50 μm in diameter and 1 cm in length, have been observed in a deposited carbon rod on the cathode electrode of a dc arc. Scanning electron microscopy images clearly show an evenly spaced array of parallel buckybundles. High resolution electron microscopy reveals that each buckybundle consists of closely packed buckytubes with their axes parallel to the bundle axis. Within each bundle it is estimated that there are about 107 buckytubes with diameters in the range (20–300 A(ring)). We have measured the deposited rod growth rate as a function of the He gas pressure and have evaluated the influence of the graphite feed rod diameter on the yield of buckybundles. The magnetic susceptibilities parallel and perpendicular to the bundle axes were measured. The results show that the bundles have anisotropic diamagnetic properties.

    Notes: Electron cyclotron heating (ECH) is used to suppress m=2 magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) oscillations in the Texas Experimental Tokamak (TEXT) [Nucl. Technol. Fusion 1, 479 (1981)]. The location of ECH power deposition is controlled by a movable antenna. The MHD activity is suppressed when the ECH beam is directed close to the q=2 surface. The experiment is simulated using a three-dimensional resistive MHD code in cylindrical geometry. For fixed plasma current, the saturated m=2 island width is found to depend on the value of the safety factor at the magnetic axis (q0). The simulation suggests that the observed saturated m=2 island in the pre-ECH plasma, which typically occupies 25% of the minor radius, corresponds to q0∼1.3. The suppression of the island in the presence of ECH is attributed to current profile modification. In some discharges, the m=2 activity does not resume even after the ECH pulse is turned off.

    Notes: A simple, one-field, two-nonlinearity, drift wave model equation is derived to describe the dynamics of a nonuniform magnetized plasma by taking into account the effects of dissipative trapped electron response in the turbulence dynamics. Because of the nonadiabatic response of trapped electrons, mode couplings by both the E×B drift and the polarization drift nonlinearities are present. In this work, the statistical dynamics for this dissipative drift wave turbulence is investigated using the EDQNM (eddy-damped quasinormal Markovian) closure scheme. In particular, apart from the eddy viscosity, a large nonlinear frequency shift is shown to be induced by cross coupling of the two nonlinearities. Thus instability drive is modified by this turbulent back reaction. By taking into account this self-consistency effect, a wave kinetic equation is derived, and the density fluctuation spectrum is obtained in different parameter ranges. The results show that the dynamics of dissipative drift wave turbulence is fundamentally different from that of the familiar Hasegawa–Mima model, because E×B drift nonlinearity blocks the low-k condensation of fluctuation energy. It is shown that both the E×B drift nonlinearity and the nonlinear frequency shift effect transfer energy nonlocally from large to small scales and, in contrast to the predictions of dimensional analysis, their contribution to the nonlinear transfer processes are actually of the same order as that of the polarization drift nonlinearity, even within the Hasegawa–Mima regime. This results in a significant modification of the Hasegawa–Mima spectrum for the short-wavelength drift waves.
