Notes: From June to July 1988, larvae of Mystus macropterus (Bleeker) were obtained by artificial propagation of spawners collected from the Jialing River, China. Larvae grown in water temperatures ranging from 26 to 29°C were fully developed at approximately 20 days. The newly-hatched larvae measured 6.0–7.5 mm t.l., exceeding the dimensions of any known newly-hatched larvae of freshwater catfishes indigenous to China. Five days after hatching, when the larvae were 11.4 mm t.l. and the prolarval stage was complete, exogenous feeding commenced. Twelve days after hatching, at 18.4 mm t.l., the yolk sac disappeared, organogenesis was almost complete and the juvenile period began. At 20 days post-hatching, at 23.0 mm t.l., the lateral line system had formed and the juveniles resembled the adults with respect to all external features, which signalled the end of thejuvenile period. Comparison of the larval development in eight species ofeconomic freshwater catfishes shows that the most significant aspect of the larval development of M. macropterus is the sustained (6–7 days) mixed nourishment period and the early differentiation of organs, which enhances the survival rate of the larvae.

Notes: Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra recorded at X band on Cu(II) in the Cu(II) doped single crystals of (NH4)2[Zn(NH3)2(CrO4)2] and (NH4)2[Cd(NH3)2(CrO4)2] showed an unusual temperature dependence in the temperature range between 4.2 and 370 K. This unusual temperature dependence is attributed to the dynamics of NH3 molecules. It is concluded that NH3 undergoes an order–disorder transition. This transition occurs at 282±2 K (T*) for (NH4)2[Zn(NH3)2(CrO4)2] and at 300±5 K for (NH4)2[Cd(NH3)2(CrO4)2]. For temperatures above T* the EPR spectra are found independent of temperature. This observation indicates that the NH3 molecules behave as free rotors rotating about their threefold symmetry axis. As the temperature is lowered, the free rotation gradually becomes hindered which leads at T* to site doubling in the EPR spectra. The hindered rotation simultaneously induces a structural change at T* reducing the local symmetry at the Cu(II) site from C2/m to approximately Cs. In the temperature range between T* and about 80 K, the EPR spectra with the magnetic field perpendicular to the threefold axis of NH3 are temperature dependent, but those with the magnetic field parallel to the threefold axis remain unchanged. This behavior is qualitatively interpreted as being due to the torsional oscillation of NH3. At temperatures lower than 80 K, the NH3 molecules exhibit the torsional oscillation of the lowest state and accordingly, all the EPR spectra become temperature independent.

Notes: The first x-ray diffraction experimental station at Beijing Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory has been available for synchrotron radiation users in research. The station is located on the back-end of 4B9A, a beamline from a bending magnet. When the storage ring of BEPC operates in a dedicated mode (2.2 GeV), 4B9A provides a focused monochromatic x ray in between 4 and 12 keV. A four-circle diffractometer with a crystal analyzer is installed. Experimental processes such as apparatus alignment, monitoring of incident radiation, acquisition of diffracted intensities, and running of the monochromator, are controlled with a computer through CAMAC modules. In this article, instrumentation and performances of the station are outlined.

Notes: Abstract Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry has been used to study the interaction of γ-amino propyl triethoxysilane with an E-glass surface. The fragmentation pattern has been interpreted by assigning a series of mass peaks to the structural unit of the poly(aminosiloxane). The composition of the coating is complicated by the presence of polydimethylsiloxane and its copolymers. The highest mass fragment was obtained from the coating exposed by extraction with warm water (697 AMU). The largest molecular fragments would appear to have degrees of polymerization of 6 with differing numbers of silanol groups. On re-extraction with hot water the fragment size decreased. It is postulated that the network chain length of the three-dimensional polymer decreased as the interface was approached. At the glass surface a chemically bound molecular layer could be identified. The full chemical nature of the deposit is complicated by the incorporation of aluminium from the substrate into the coating. It was also possible to confirm that a layer of warm-water soluble oligomers existed at the air interface.

Notes: A novel sensor was developed, based on light scatter, to estimate the cell concentration in the presence of suspended solids. The light scatter properties of cells in the presence of suspended solids were investigated. Two crucial observations were made: first, that the light scatter from cells is essentially a linear function of cell concentration and, second, that invariant regions are present in the light scatter spectrum of cell/solid substrate mixtures. Invariant regions are wavelength intervals of the light scatter spectrum in which the light scatter reading is independent of solid substrate concentration and only a function of cell concentration. The occurrence of invariant regions is the key behavior which allowed the quantification of cell concentration in the presence of suspended solids. An algorithm was developed for the estimation, from light scatter data, of cell concentration in the presence of solid substrate. The light scatter approach was validated by comparing cell concentrations estimated by this technique to those obtained from DNA and carbon dioxide evolution rate measurements during a series of fermentations. The model system used was Bacillus subtilis var sakainensis ATCC 21394 growing on fishmeal as the sole nitrogen source.A model was developed based on the interactions of scatter and absorbance. This model reflects the hypothesis that invariant regions are caused by changes in the absorbance of the solid substrate as a function of wavelength. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The preparation of cyanate ester thermosetting resins by coreacting a fluorinated bisphenol A dicyanate (6F-BADCY) monomer with a monofunctional reactive cyanate, namely, the dinonyl phenol cyanate (DNPC), is described in this paper. Our objective in this study was to modify the 6F-BADCY system with reactive diluents of a nonpolar nature and produce matrix resins processable at FR-4 epoxylike conditions. By introducing the monofunctional cyanate as a reactive diluent, it is expected that the molar crosslink density of the resulting network will be reduced. Highly branched triazine polymers will result from this approach. Dinonyl phenol cyanate was quantitatively synthesized by reacting dinonyl phenol with cyanogen bromide in the presence of triethylamine.
